Introduction

Looking through Scorehero's Definitive List Of Guides!, I realized that, while there were a few Cliffs Of Dover guides (two [1, 2] to be exact), they were both only about Intro Solo B. Now, these are both great guides, don't get me wrong, but Cliffs Of Dover is a great song and deserves a full length guide for it. Thus, what you are reading right now was created.

Cliffs Of Dover is ranked high on many people's lists of favourite songs in the game. Not only to play, but to listen too as well. It is in the 8th tier, which already makes it a pretty tough song; however, it is (arguably) one of the easier songs in the 8th tier. It's also 4:10 long. Now that you know some information on the song, on to the guide.

And like any song, it gets more fun to play the better you get at it.

Intro Solo A

The very first note of this song is part of a star power phrase, and it is very important that you get this said phrase. It isn't too difficult, however. You should start on 1st position.

Intro Solo B

Aaaahhh yes, the infamous 'reverse Thunderhorse orange snake.' This is probably the hardest part of the song, which is why there are so many topics about it.

All of these notes (except the first one) are hammer-ons, but there is one thing to remember you can't hold down the orange button! If you hold down the orange button none of the other notes will register, because you can't hold down a higher note and play lower notes.

And then for some reason there is a random green note that is technically in this section, but I pretty much consider it a part of the Verse Introduction, so I'll put it in the next section.

Verse Introduction

This riff comes up many times in the song and is one of the most important things if you want 5* on this song.

It goes like this:



It does this 3 and 1/4 times. There are also two main ways to finger this: using the hammer-ons and pull-offs, or strumming everything. They are like this:

Then comes a chord that you should play with 1-3 fingering.

There are slight variations on the chorus each time (a note or two) but for the most part, this is how it goes.

Keep in mind that every other note is a hammer-on; i.e. after the first chord, it goes, strum, hammer-on, strum, hammer-on, etc. However, some people just strum through, which is fine as well.

The beginning of the four part solo contains a star power phrase (which contains one chord from Interlude C).

Probably the easiest solo of all, this is basically a bunch of hold notes; however, it does have a star power phrase that continues into Solo C, which is somewhat important to get.

The star power phrase comes at the end of the Solo, and looks like this:

For Intro B one handed, I find it easier if you switch to using ring finger for the Orange notes after both Greens are gone.

edit: You may want to reduce your font size. When you have the numbers listed for fingering, the font size causes the numbers to be misaligned with the freticons. Same thing with the "u/d/h" symbols for strumming and HOPOing.

I was actually about to write a guide for this song; now I don't have to . Good job.

Couple of suggestions:
--This guide is definitely solid as an FC guide, but for a five-star guide you should probably include a little more on what sections are important to hit and proper star power usage.
--ThunderAlex has a great Intro Solo B guide (one of the two you linked in your Introduction). I know he has five different methods listed there, you should consider adding the other two.
--I found a few small mistakes in fingering alignment:
----First part of Verse 1A
----The three-note chord in the first part of Solo A is a sustain; your fingering for the chord also doesn't line up well
----Your strumming in Solo A is also off by a bit
----Your fingering in Solo C appears a bit cut-off
----The fingering for the last chord in One Last Solo doesn't line up.

I personally use this fingering to tap Intro Solo B

I found it way easier than playing the semi-scales from second position. Treat the BYRGRYB like the zig zags from FSB in One and spasm with your tapping finger on the O.

You can also use the last HOPO section of ISA to get into position for tapping by just playing the whole section and tapping the last orange with your strumming hand. After that, just elbow strum the first orange note

EDIT: Also, you might want to change the Font to normal size. As it is right now, its a little hard to read.

This one took a little searching, but I found the problem. You didn't close the first bold tag you used in your table of contents, so it went looking for the next [/b] tag it could find, which happened to be at your "Fingering Guide" line. The [b] tag in that line therefore had no closing tag, so it went looking for the next one, and so on, which caused the whole guide to screw up. I'm not sure why it affects Firefox differently than it does IE (not the first time I've seen discrepancies between the two), but it's a simple fix.

On an unrelated note, would you mind if I wrote up a fairly in-depth post on using Practice Mode for the Chorus? I mentioned earlier that I previously had been planning to write a guide for this song; that was one of the things I was going to do. I guess, but it just doesn't feel...I don't know...polite (something like that) to infringe on another guide-writer's territory. I suppose if enough people wanted me to do it I would, but even then only if -Magnum- was one of them.

Yeah, the fix worked. It looks fine now.

One more suggestion; an easy change that you could make would be to paste this guide into a word processor with a find/replace function. Use that to replace all instances of the word "white" with "#F0F0F0". This will change the color of the periods that you used for spacing to match the exact color of the background of your post, thus rendering them invisible. The white doesn't look bad, but with a minimal effort it could look even better.

After more thought on the matter, I've decided that a general guide to using Practice Mode effectively will be more useful. I could do Cliffs of Dover chorus as an example there, though, and you can link it or copy it if it works out well. I'll let you know when I finish it.
