does anyone on SH make chainmail?

this is not yet done. the symbol in brass is the Hylian crest. this is 14g galvanized steel, 3/8 inch inner diameter, in the most common weave, European 4-1. everything else is 14g 3/8in unless otherwise specified.

it has a zipper!

a zipper that works! the sleeve did not move, i took this pic in the mirror before i remembered my LT's webcam.

the strap i made for my guitar, European 6-1. guitar thread: http://www.scorehero.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=72498&start=90&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

this is NOT a swastika; it is a design i made by combining my initials, SM. the copper part is dragonscale, and the steel is European 4-1.

a dodecahedron made with hourglass units. this requires a higher aspect ratio than my usual ring, so i had to raise the inner diameter. these are 14g galv. steel around a thick marker. i also added some captive rings to help it stay solid. captive rings are held within weaves without actually linking through other rings. orbitals are similar, but are held around other rings rather than between them. the hourglass has 4 orbitals per unit.

the core of this is a cube made with hourglasses, similar to above. the core is made of 20g galv. steel around a pen. i then added some rings left over from the dodecahedron for support.

my armored pencil series the top is Captive Inverted Roundmail. you wish it was copper... that is rust i used this thing for a year or two. the 2nd is brass, in a weave i made up. I've since been informed that the weave was in existence before i made it, but whatever. though it doesn't rust, my hand turns green every day. the bottom is my newest, incomplete design. the weave is Half Persian 5-1, with an AR that barely fit the weave, which causes it to spiral naturally.

this is a segment of Spiral 4-1 with a penny for scale. the penny is gold because of a chemistry lab involving copper reactivity. ask your teacher.

my friend makes tons of these. they're Half-Persian 4-1 (similar to my spiral pencil which is 5-1.) i like the bottom one because it matches my guitar they are colors because he used anodized aluminum (AA), which is Al with a thin colored coating. i'll be getting some AA rings soon.

this is one finger of a glove i might make. the galvanized steel dries out my fingers really badly, so i may only make this with Al or stainless steel. these rings are the same as the spiral 4-1.

post your stuff if you have any, and if you dont, make some!

Wow, that's pretty cool. Where do you get the parts to do that?

the steel i got from any old hardware store. the copper was mostly scrap from my basement renovations, and the brass i ordered from the ring lord. i usually get wire and make the rings myself, which i do by wrapping the wire around a rod and cutting along the coil to get rings. you can get parts in coil or ring form as well.

I would buy that hoodie thing at the top. Seriously.

Where do you get the stuff for this?
Gah, Ninja'd.

I would love to know how to do this. I doubt I ever could though.

How long did it take you to make the thing at the top?
When did you start doing this?

When I first saw this thread I thought it was about chainmail, not the actual chainmail.

I didn't know you were this awesome.

That's awesome, I could never do that.

I'm in accel classes, and I get all A's, but I'm retarted when it comes to these things.

It's probably easier than it looks, but it looks pretty damn tough.

the only real difficulty is making the rings. it takes a lot of wrist movement, and this is why i have carpel tunnel, not GH. once you figure out how to read weave tutorials it's not too hard to figure out.

thanks if it hadn't taken so long I'd consider selling some stuff.

the hood was made summer '06 and just added to the shirt i made summer '08. summer '06 i would be so good at GH if not for this...

With this and your custom guitar thread, you sir, are a god. Amazing work, I'd buy one of those jackets or even one of the pencils!

Hi hairy man. Do you make things too? If you do you should add pictures.

Good luck finding other people on SH that do this, I've never heard of it before.

Wow. Great work. It seems redundant at this point, but seriously, well done.

I have to ask: do you take part in any live action role-playing or get any practical use out of this chainmail? They're great pieces of artwork in and of themselves, but I was just wondering if you get any use out of them?

I've actually always wanted chainmail, like for a long time. Be it gloves, a shirt, anything, I've always wanted some to wear around the house in case I'm called into battle. I never had any idea that people could do this as a hobby.

It sounds pretty interesting. Any tips on getting started? / cost estimations for some of those pieces you have (to make, not purchase)
