If there are multiple difficulty levels to play on (we can only choose one), would it be a dick move to choose Hard over Expert? (I'm proficient at expert, but feel victory would be easier on hard) There's also a Medium difficulty level.

To the other contestants no, but if you tell them then probably yes, to sh I dont know but I would be really annoyed if a good expert player played hard and won!

But the aim of tournemants is to win, and if you cant win on expert then you might aswell try hard!

In the tournaments I've been in, the prize for winning on Expert was better than the prize for winning on Hard, so I played on Expert to get a chance at the better prize. Not sure if your tournament is set up the same way.

it's a dick move. (Legit yes, but that doesn't mean you should do it)

You're going down a difficulty and screwing up the game for all the people who genuinely play hard.

Sandbagging is a legitimate strategy.

I never understand why tournaments, when set up with two difficulty brackets, set them on hard and expert, rather than medium and expert (or even medium and hard). The jump in difficulty between medium and hard is way bigger than the gap between hard and expert. Likewise, I would think the percentage of people who can only play hard (but not expert) would be way lower than the percentage of people who are only capable of playing on medium (not hard or expert). Tournaments that have both a hard and an expert bracket are bound to get some expert players who don't mind playing down a difficulty in order to win.

If you guys wanted to know the setup:

Random Song

3 Difficulty choices (M,H,X)

Free Entry

$75 in credit at local video game store and copy of Smash Hits or GH5. Prize is the same for each difficulty.

If the prize were greater on expert, then I would have made my choice.

If it's the same prize across all difficulties, and you don't feel like you could win a X, then sure, drop down to Hard. The point of the tournament is to win, so you should do everything and anything you can do, that are within the rules, to win.
