I'm trying to make GH1 and GH2 customs discs, and I need a modded PS2 to play them on. (I've heard that it's possible to play modded discs without modding if you change out the discs at just the right time. Is this true?) There is the HDD method, but I have the downgraded slim version. How do you softmod a slim PS2. _________________

you can use FreeMCBoot to run homebrew apps from your PS2's menu (the one with 'Browser' and 'System Configuration' on it.)
To get it on you have to download and copy the FMCB Noobs package to a USB flash drive then have a method of loading .ELF files on your PS2.
There's a whole bunch of different methods like Swap Magic 3.8, Action Replay MAX's media player, swapping a modified version of a game that uses ELF files (most notably 007 Agent Under Fire), or send your memory card to someone who has FMCB already to get it done; and each method is very well documented online. |

For a slim, there's the possibility of running patched burned ISOs using ESR, or loading games from a USB drive (slow, but suitable for GH games although they load pretty slowly) or from a Windows/SMB file share (medium speed, max raw throughput is slower than CDVD but any game that seeks a lot during a file access will usually load faster over the network than CDVD). The latter is quick for customs as you can literally load a custom game seconds after the ISO is done building).
Of course, we always recommend you use authentic original discs as the base for anything you load with a backup loader. If we find out somehow that you are using downloaded ISOs (except in the limited case where you own an authentic disc but are unable to read from it), then we will not assist you. Downloading PS2 games, outside of the aforementioned limited exception, is never okay. PS2 games are perfectly rippable by ImgBurn with no special hardware.
We do not support software piracy here. We even (still?) ban users for distributing custom ISOs offsite if we find out about it. I say "we" as a community, as I do not speak for Scorehero itself, other than echoing existing statements from the staff. _________________

Also if you're going to burn your DVDs, there's specific brands that work best. From my experience Verbatim brand discs work perfectly, as well as Sony's own brand.
I use the DVD+R discs instead of -R; I've heard it makes a difference but I couldn't tell you what that is or whether it matters for this application. |

Verbatim definitely works, probably the only DVD's I found around where I live for cheap that has no problems. _________________
