Necro, but I can relate. I understand how devastating the loss of a pet can be and I'm happy he came back. I'll share my experience as well.
I work often late into the night, but I leave my dogs (two yorkies) to play in my locked and fenced-in backyard throughout the day. They have a small doghouse they sleep at night in as well, but they tend to shit and piss all over the place, so I leave them outside during the day.
One night a few weeks ago, I came back and only found one of them in the backyard. Normally, the one that was missing is just hiding in a bush, but not this time - he was gone. There was a house party going on next door that may have spooked him, so I asked around but half of them were just drunk out of their minds so they weren't much help. At this point I started imagining all kinds of scenarios like maybe one of the party-goers stole him or he got spooked and took off in one direction without turning back.
Frantic, my wife and I took to the streets with our flashlights and our best not-so-loud-that-you'll-wake-the-neighbors dog calls. I turned onto one block in the neighborhood and there he was, walking right in the middle of the street. I jumped out of the car and started running toward him, but he just took off in the other direction. I called his name, he turned back and gave me a look like "...oh it's you! YAY!". We ran towards eachother and embraced like a son and father who has come back from war.
Later I found a small hole where he got out and fixed it. Reflecting, I wondered from then on what I would have done if I found a stray dog in the street. Do I just leave him for the owner to find? Do I fear what would happen if a car hit him and take him in until I find the owner? Thankfully, I found him and not some asshole who would go out and sell him (pure-bred yorkies can be sold for some pretty good money). _________________

My jerk cat disappeared for about 24 hours when he was a couple years old. They seem to roam for longer when they're younger. Nine years later and he's still going strong. _________________

Hmph, that kinda sucks. So say, if a dog licks her she gets an allergic reaction or something? But if shes just around one it's okay? _________________

it's very subtle but it gets red and itchy. nothing extreme tho. _________________
