You can play PS2 games on the PS3 if you have the older model PS3s. The fat model PS3s had full 100% backwards compatibility, but the later ones did not. If you have either PS3 slim or the PS3 super slim, then you get ZERO PS2 compatibility. I know this as I own all three systems. The controllers from the PS2 will work with the PS3 if you have the adapter that allows you to plug in to a USB port on the PS3, but, even if you have such an adapter, the PS2 era controllers have their color buttons mapped to different keys. If I remember correctly from 2007, the green and yellow were correct, but the start button was actually orange, the blue and red were swapped, and the select button was the orange button. Very awkward. You are 100% better off just playing GH1 and 80s on a PS2. I know that waaaay back when the PS3 came out there were some people that rewired their controllers just to play with them wired on the PS3, but it involved a bit of soldering and such. Sorry for the bad news.

It's Wikipedia, but the information seems accurate enough: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3

Edit: apparently, people have had some success, depending on the adapter. The TAC adapter apparently let you play with PS2 controllers on the PS3, but I do not know if it is available any more. Here are some relevant threads for you:

Site that originally sold the TAC:

The point still stands though, if you don't have the fast PS3 (VERY rare nowadays) then you cannot play the PS2 games on the PS3.

Thanks for your replies guys. I'm not sure what PS3 model my mate has but this is the guitar I've got:

http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/MJwAAOSw2GlXFin3/$_3.JPG

If you zoom in, it has a similar button to Xbox in order to turn it on but it's for the PlayStation. I don't think PS2 guitars have this meaning this must be a PS3 guitar. If I manage to get the fat original PS3, would this guitar possibly work or is it still unlikely?

I'm on my phone so haven't been able to look at all the links you gave me.

That is a GH5/BH/VH era guitar. I own 3 of those and they play all the RB and GH games for PS3 just fine. We were trying to get that to work on my fat PS3, with the PS2 games, but I did not own a TAC. If your friend did not buy the PS3 within the first 8 months of US/UK launch it is almost certainly NOT a fat PS3, but likely a slim. It is 100% easy to figure out whether it is or not. Put a PS2 disc in it. If it does not read it, its not a fat PS3. Unfortunately, I cannot do further testing, as the optical drive wore out on my original model.

I assume a bog standard PS2 wireless Kramer that you get with GH3 would work on GH1 & GH:80s?? I've found a couple with dongles that I could get because I need more whammy in my life.

The issue comes from the controller port itself. The PS1 and PS2 both used a proprietary multi pin port that worked for all PS controllers. The dongles you mention would fit those ports. The PS3 and the PS4 use USB ports. You need an adapter to go between the two system types. The TAC supposedly worked flawlessly, but I never had one myself. A different adapter made by a now defunct company allowed me to connect my old controllers/dancepads to the PS3 and it worked great, just not mapped correctly for the PS2 guitars. Once again, the problem is much less with which controllers work, as it is what model PS3 you are using.
Launch PS3 20/60 gig fat PS3 ~ Mar - Aug 2008 (100% backwards compatibility)
Fat PS3 with Motostorm 80 gig ~ Aug - Dec 2008 (backwards compatible but partly through software emulation)
"Slim PS3" Jan 2009 - Dec 2011 80/120/160 gig (no backwards compatibility)
"Super Slim PS3" Dec 2011 - present 160/250 gig (no backwards compatibility)

My friend owns a launch one that works fine. I own a Motostorm one that had the optical drive fail, a Slim that periodically overheats and stops reading for no reason, and a Super Slim that works fine in every way. I can ask my friend what adapters he has for PS2 to PS3 and we can test some really old GH guitars, but that won't solve the issue unless you have access to the launch or fat PS3. The GH5/BH/VH type controller you have is the 2nd best one I use on my PS3, which is why I own 3 of them.

Edit: if you mean to use a GH3 PS2 controller on a PS2 to play GH1/2/80s, yes it works fine.

So I've got a new PS2 wireless guitar now and I've gotten a few good scores on easy mode. However; the blue and orange frets are now joint?! As in, I press blue and orange goes down too and I press orange and blue goes down too. This will make it impossible to play medium upwards... shall I open it up and have a look?!

I've done a fair bit of guitar surgery in my days of playing this game...you should open it up and post a pic

The older guitars, from PS2/GH3 era and earlier are all pretty simplistic inside. The later ones are more complicated, and as such they made it harder to get inside them. Basically, on the older guitars you are looking at 5 inputs, each connected to the control board via a seperate cable. Two buttons registering as each other could be, imo, caused by a few things:
1) the fret buttons are pressing on the sensors that perhaps are just slightly physically shifted, opening it up should show you either way pretty easily, just move the sensors or put in a spacer.
2) The wires for the buttons themselves can be badly wired/frayed and when you press on one it sends an input to both. This would require electrical tape to rewrap the frayed bits, or a replacement on the control board end if its there.
3) The control board itself is bad, either by defect, bad soldering on the board, or a component going out. Worst case scenario, would recommend a new guitar.

In addition, on the PS2, the controller/memory ports are notorious in old age for having oxidation on the contacts. You could try cleaning where the contacts go into the system itself by taking that part of the controller apart. I was trying to play GH1 3 years ago, was unable to get my memory card to work, and couldn't find any new ones to buy. Cleaning the contacts on it did the trick, in this case with a pencil eraser (no joke). Contacts were then shiny and new and works great again.

Either way, yes, its worth taking the guitar apart, should be 3 to 4 screws and having a looksee. Best case its just two inputs too close to each other, worst case the control board has flaws/defects. Good luck!

So I finally decided to finish the GH2 Easy Guitar FGFC. Ended up second place on Xbox and inside the top 10 overall, which isn't too shabby.

After I finished that, I thought I'd just have fun and play a song I haven't played in ages and went and FC'd The Trooper first try for hard FC # 63/74! Hardly any that I can get now, but that was very random (and nice too).

Good work Chrisssss, and not too shabby at all. However, I'll be having that 2nd place back, if not 1st place from Snake, once I get to finish my 2014/15 redux!

Sounds like what happened when I randomly booted up GHSH and FC'd Cult of Personality on XGuitar on literally my first attempt. Completely surprising, but you don't question it because fuck yeah!

Nice job on the FGFC, too.

Thanks Sham, I still have some scores to improve and my new guitar's whammy isn't too bad so can definitely grab points here and there, though first place is out of reach for me. Good luck to you when you start going for it!

And void, Cult of Personality on XGuitar is a lot better than my random FC!

Right, it's back to expert bass for me for a little while. I've decided to go for GH:Metallica because I only had 8/49 FCs. I've now gained one more, but I'm not doing very well at scores on this game from the two songs I did today.

FC # 9 - For Whom The Bell Tolls (global 14th place)
The Unforgiven (global 17th place)

Nice! I'm excited to see how many FC's you can get out of this game. I would say you should shoot for at least 43. After that are the hard but possible MoP, ANL and DH. Then you hit the brick wall that is the big 3. Good luck!
