As it is everywhere, lets talk about the games that made the year for us. I won't be doing it in a directly top five fashion, with one being the best, just in a general way of listing them.

Battlefield 3
No surprise here, despite a weak singleplayer and co-op aspect, I've put over 100 hours into the multiplayer and I still love it. The action, scale, the intensity, it to me surpasses what Bad Company what was doing and does a great job at evolving the series into something that SHOULD appeal to veterans and newcomers (The Veterans can be a very fickle group lol). I'll be playing this one for many months till the next inevitable BF game.

Batman: Arkham City
While the first game was a triumph for super hero gaming, I think Arkham City is so far the pinnacle of it. I know people had some issues with the amount of villains and how the story felt abit cluttered, but Rocksteady really put alot of love into every aspect of the game, and it seriously shows. I don't know how they could possibly make another one after this one, but I would love to see them try.

Skyrim
I came into this game, not a fan of Oblivion. The idea of Oblivion I like, but I thought there was alot of unnecessary and sloppy aspects of the game and it just never clicked for me, not even with mods. Skyrim though, fine tuned the game and made a fantastic looking RPG that eventually got me excited and wanting to play with it and that's even with being kinda down on the fantasy games of late, completely ignoring other fantasy RPG's of late like Dragon Age and The Witcher. While the story is...alright, I really loved the exploration and action of the game and eagerly await what kind of amazing mods there will be.

Rocksmith
While not technically a game, I feel it does fill a nice gap in the dwindling music rhythm genre. I did play some guitar before Rocksmith, so I was slighlty above the curve and while it does feel like they tend to go a tad to slow in increasing the difficulty of the game, already I feel like there are a good two or three songs I might be able to play on my own. If anything, it gets me excited to play guitar again...despite music I might not normally like (Though a couple songs are downright terrible lol)

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Despite my disappointment in the Wii and my annoyance of motion controls, I was still really pulled into this Zelda game that is pretty easily the best Zelda I've played in years. The story is well done, the characters are great, the dungeons are very inventive and fresh, and while it stays true to what Zelda is, it just does everything so right...Well almost everything as the whole Sky aspect was done REALLY poorly. Nothing to explore at all and flying gets pretty boring after the initial novelty wears off. Ignoring that, it is easily the best Wii game I've played.

Honorable Mentions
Portal 2 - While it is a good game, it doesn't make the top of the list, because it lacks replay value. When you beat the game once, you know how to beat everything, making it less interesting to me, but I thought it was a pretty good sequel and I love when they go back to the original test area.

Bulletstorm - While feeling like a mix between Duke Nukem and Gears of War, I thought it was a really entertaining game, with it's super crude humor and jokes, it was just great having something that has a few serious moments, but it's more about just chaotic and ridiculous kills and is a game that gets a sequel.

Saints Row The Third - It really is the most over the top crime sandbox out there, but in comparison to SR2, it was really lacking in content. Short campaign, an okay selection of side missions, it just felt like they didn't add enough to the game, which makes sense with the major DLC push they are doing. Even with that, I thought it was super fun to play, though they really need to add 4 player co-op to the game.

L.A. Noire - While I appreciate what the game was doing, having some fantastic story to it along with amazing acting for a video game combined with the impressive motion tech, I feel it's only half a really good game. The detective and mystery solving is great, but I feel like making it a sandbox game was mostly pointless and the combat stuff added in feels tacked on. Hell, it would've been a better game had it been more linear between locations and then just have sections open up when you need it. Would've really streamlined the game.

Biggest Disappointments
Homefront - A videogame from the writer of Red Dawn? Oh hell yes. How did they get it wrong? Short and uninspired singleplayer with one reasonable level to it and generic multiplayer that is doing nothing more than just trying to be an inbetween of Battlefield and Call of Duty, but not really doing enought to be it's own game.

Bodycount - It was supposed to be a spiritual successor to an underrated shooter on the PS2, Black, but ends up being one of the worst shooters I've played in a long time. Where's the gun porn they were talking about with this game? The guns sound and feel like generic shit and it's just a bland as FUCK game with the current generation of good looking and smooth playing shooters out there. This one pissed me off SO bad.

Rage - Now I wasn't sure if I wanted this put here or in honorable mentions, but I feel in the end, the game more disappointed me more on how lacking the game was, not too mention how I had to get a refund on PC for the game cause it was broken and then only played about half of it on console. The game itself, while a very solid shooter and appealing to my love of the post-apocalyptic open world, it is just a boring world. Missions are boring, the car combat is only kinda interesting, it's not a very open world, the story is pretty bland despite the setting, the inventory and item collecting is very simple and limited in comparison to much better games like Fallout and STALKER or even Borderlands. It's not a bad game, I just felt like it didn't fully deliver on the experience I was hoping to get out of it.

Surprised MW3 is not on the list or honorable mentions. Well, that game was overrated, in my opinion, anyways.

I completely agree with this list, especially Rocksmith and Skyward Sword (mainly because Zelda is my most favorite franchise ever! ), but, and I hope no one hates me for this, I'd probably switch Batman with Saints Row. I did like Arkham City, but not as much as Saints Row. I completely agree with everything you said about both games, though.

1. Dark Souls - Demon's Souls is easily my favorite game of all time, and when I heard about Dark Souls, I was excited as all hell. This game is incredible. For real. The combat is fluid, and it's really hard. (Which I love.) GOTY!!!!!111

2. Batman: Arkham City - I'll be the first to admit, I didn't believe Rocksteady could top Arkham Asylum. But they did. Improved on every level. Also, loved the ending.

3. Kirby's Adventure In Dreamland - Kirby's Adventure is my other favorite game ever, and considering that this game pays homage to it almost everywhere, it's awesome. Orgasm in gaming form.

4. Dungeon Defenders - This game is really, really fun. That is all.

5. Skyrim - Huge, entertaining, but kept from the #2 spot by the still floaty combat.

Honorable Mentions:

Portal 2 - Sorry, I just wanted to love you completely, but that middle section under the facility was fucking horrible.

Sonic Generations - More Sonic is always welcome.

Most Disappointing Game + Worst Game:

Dungeon Siege 3 - Seriously, what the fuck is this shit?! I loved the first game and liked the second one, but this game is an absolute shitstain on the series. My DOG could've done a better job on this game. Worst game of the year, possibly worst game ever. They absolutely butchered everything about the franchise. Pre-made characters, shitty loot, god-awful bosses, and the holy grail of shittiness, CONSOLIZATION. It's practically fucking unplayable on PC because the controls are so shitty.at least it looks nice.

note: I have skyward sword, just haven't played it yet, that's why it's not on here.

Modern Warfare 3 is neither a bad game, nor a great game. It was just more of the same, and not even in a good way as it can be with some games, so it didn't really fit onto either spot for me lol It's just a series that is continually losing appeal with every release for me.

Batman is higher than Saints Row, cause I felt that Batman brought a better complete experience. It didn't feel to drawn out or too short, the city isn't unnecessarily big, and there's a metric fuck ton of content within every inch of the city. Saints Row was crazy and ridiculous, but being too short, lacking the content it should have, and feeling like the extras were kinda just tacked on or removed cause they couldn't do it right, kept it from being an amazing game to me.

Best Games: Skyrim, Portal 2, Battlefield 3, Halo Combat Evolved: Anniversary, and Minecraft.

Disappointment of the Year: Modern Warfare 3.

Honorable Mention: Pokémon Black/White

And yes, I believe that there is enough original content on CE:A that warrants it being on my list. The enhanced graphics and updated maps surely do make the remake all the more worth the discounted price.

Well, attempting to respond to both of your lists, I'm going to make one of my own. This is not in any specific order.

Skyward Sword: This was actually better than what I had expected. I thought SS was going to be horrible due to the motion controls that tick a crap load of people off. Although the story was pretty amazing, Majora's Mask is still my all-time favorite!

Rocksmith: I've been an okay expert guitarist ever since I've got GH3 for my birthday, but I've never known how to actually play a real guitar. My Christmas gift this year was an electirc guitar w/ amp and everything else. I've also got Rocksmith as well. I do have to say that Rocksmith actually taught me most of the notes I know now (which is not alot).

Skyrim: Not much to be said about this one. This game was amazing nonetheless. I have yet to meet anyone who hates Skyrim. The only thing that annoys me about this game is that goddamn "I used to be an advernturer like you. Then I took an arrow in the knee." meme, which, like Chuck Testa memes, are annoying and were never funny in the first place >_>

Sonic Generations: As a big fan of Sega, I believe Sonic Generations was pretty darn awesome. I've never fully finished this game (My friend only rented it and played it on his account since I was at his house at that time). I've only went through about 77%.

Battlefield 3: I chose this not because of single player, but multiplayer. I did sell this game, though, for Skyward Sword, which was the greatest thing I have ever did. I love this a lot more than Modern Warfare, Halo, Gears Of War, etc.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Batman: Arkham City: Usually sequels to games are awful. This was one of the exceptions. I liked this game a lot. Wasn't on the list because I am not a big fan of superhero games.

Portal 2: Another great sequel to a great game. Portal is a really great series and I like what is featured in the games.

L.A. Noire: Great storyline. This game reminds me of the game Deja Vu for the NES and I have no idea why. Probably because of the detective work you have to do in both. It's not on the list becuase I think Co-op should have been in the game so you and a friend could work together to solve cases.

Disappointment?

Modern Warfare 3: I've had school friends, family, and some GH buddies tell me how amazing MW3 is. So, wasted my good old hard earned money on MW3. What could I say? IT'S ALMOST THE EXACT SAME AS MW2!!! All there is that's new are games and some guns. Sold it after 2 days.

Once again, this is my opinion. We all have different takes on everything, so I please ask if you don't have anything nice to say about this list don't say it. Thanks.

1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PC) - Absolutely no contest or debate. This game lives up to its hype, and then some.

2. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (DS) - a game that was released without any fanfare, promotion or hype, thought up by the genius behind the Ace Attorney series. An excellent storyline combined with innovative gameplay elements combine to make this the best DS title released this year.

3. Pokemon Black & White (DS) - a fantastic addition to the series, although IMO not quite as good as Heart Gold/Soul Silver still amanges to be one of the few truly great games released this year.

4. VVVVVV (PC) - An extremely challenging 2D platforming game with a fantastic soundtrack proves to not only be the best indie game released this year, but an outstanding title in its own right.

5. Professor Layton and the Last Specter (DS) - or Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call as it's known over here expands on the series as much as its predecessors did. Standard story coupled with a fresh batch of puzzles and a strangely addictive RPG-type extra game

Honourable mentions: LA Noire, Portal 2, Bastion, Dungeon Defenders, Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

I haven't played Arkham City so have no opinion to offer on it.

Overall, 2011 has been extremely disappointing for games. Very few big releases living up to their buildup (some completely falling flat), the real gems being underappreciated. 2012 is shaping up to be different with the long-awaited release of Diablo 3, as well as other titles such as Final Fantasy XIII-2, and perhaps the chance that a good Guitar Hero game will be released nearer the end of the year.

Put me down for Dead Space 2 and Dark Souls.

Dark Souls is the best game I've played in maybe 10 years.

This thread makes me realize just how many games I missed out on this year

Anyways, from the games I have played, here is my list:

1. Skyrim
2. Skyward Sword
3. LA Noire

Sadly, those are the only ones I would even put in my "best games of the year" list. I played others but was mainly just disappointed. Pretty sure the following would be:

4. Uncharted 3 - The fact that I haven't played this yet is almost mind blowing
5. Batman: Arkham City

Honorable mention to Gears of War 3. I really liked it even though I never finished the game (got too busy). Assassin's Creed Revelations probably would have made the list too.

Man, I'm getting lazy on my game playing

1. Skyrim - I have been a die-hard Elder Scrolls fan since I first picked up Morrowind in 7th grade. I'm now in my first year of college, and I still love this series more than any other series except Zelda which it ties with. This game, in my opinion, took the good parts of Oblivion and expanded on them with Morrowind-esque ideas, creating one HELL of a gaming experience.

2. Batman: Arkham City- I rented Arkham Asylum a month or so after it came out, and I absolutely loved it. It was a near last-minute decision, but Arkham City ended up being the first game I've ever gone to a midnight launch for. And for the next 5 days straight it was hard to put the controller down. This game combines incredible story, characters, voice-acting, controls, and pretty much everything else you could imagine.

3. Star Wars: The Old Republic- Not much I can really say about this. Just know that it has eaten up a lot of my time and I've been only playing at a friends house because I can't afford it myself yet. Really looking forward to this game's future.

4. Magicka - I love this game. It might be the most fun game to play with friends. Ever.

5. Dead Space 2- This game only gets the number 5 spot because I've only had it for a day and a half now. I am the kind of person who normally HATES scary movies and games. I could never play through Silent Hill because it terrified me, and the scariest movies I've ever watched were the Saw movies because they don't have many jump scares. However, in the short amount of time I have owned this game it was hard to not continue playing no matter how scared I got. This game could probably slip up to 2 or 3 after I've owned it longer.

Honorable Mentions

Minecraft - Just couldn't justify putting it above actual games when it's really a life simulator haha.

Bastion - The story-telling is what makes this game for me. Incredibly done.

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - The Zelda franchise is easily tied with The Elder Scrolls for my favorite game series. Why is this in the honorable mentions then? Because I haven't played it yet. I don't own a Wii. But it still gets honorable mention because it's Zelda, and I <3 Zelda games.

That was only the original version that was released in 2010, it was re-released in July of this year with all the extras like custom levels so counts as far as I'm concerned

1- Arkham City
2- Portal 2
3- Bastion
4- Saints Row: The Third (I must admit this was the first Saints Row game I played)

I don't think I would be able to get a 5th game. I really wanted to add Battlefield 3, but I can't until I'm able to play it >_<

And I should try to play Skyward Sword ASAP.

Dissapointment: Skyrim (*puts flame shield on*). Extremelly overhyped. Too simplified to be a TES game. Yes, it's better than unmoded Oblivion, but still... I would pick Morrowind over Skyrim any day
