But that Watch Dogs game looks interesting. Not a day 1 buy because who knows how good it will be, but I'll keep my eye on it. And AC3 looks great, which is what I'm really looking forward to. |
The majority was not really expecting much from Microsoft due to their lacking direction for the past few years, and it was expected that Sony's would be low on surprises and have tendencies of dragging. Nintendo's blundering conference, however, came out of left-field due to how well their past two conferences did in comparison to their competitors. What made the constant lulls in the presentation so shocking was that they were the only company producing a major piece of new hardware, an observation that practically warrants information regarding software that can sell the console to the most dedicated demographics. The problem was that Nintendo focused too much on the wrong demographic (families and casuals) over the people that actual wanted to watch the conference (dedicated gamers). _________________

Gamers are the ones watching from home/work, yes, but E3 isn't for gamers. It's called a press conference for a reason. It's for the press (outside of gaming publications) and for investors. If Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo can prove they have products that will sell, it's a successful conference as far as they're concerned.
Yeah it would be fun if there were new IPs or a few big reveals for the "hardcore" crowd, but E3 is not intended for that purpose. Personally I am tired of more and more sequels (even if it's games I like). I want to see risky new games and possibly breakout hits.
Think of it this way: why should E3 presentations cater their marketing towards the people (us) who will already buy their products anyway? We are a guaranteed demographic. Doesn't it make more sense to try to draw in an audience that also has spending power and may not be aware of all the new "casual games" coming up? More people will buy a Wii Fit from reading it in a non-gaming Health magazine than they will from reading about it on IGN. That's why these conferences always go the way they do. I'm going to buy several games this year, regardless of my impression of the developers or the marketing I see for those games, so I don't expect them to market to me at E3. _________________

All good points. I didn't really think of it like this, but I think you hit the nail on the hit.
The other thing we have to remember is that both Microsoft and Sony are in the final stages of the life-cycle for their systems which means they have to stall until the next reveal comes, but they also need to keep everyone interested so sales continue on as usual.
Games like GoW, Halo 4 & LoU seem like guaranteed system sellers and so those are the ones that are pushed to forefront.
Games like AC3, Hitman: Absolution, & COD:BO2 are multi-platform so will get a lot of play, but most likely less than the exclusives since they don't necessarily drive sales for consoles.
Poor Nintendo... I lol'd at Smart Glass which is ultimately a kick in the face to Nintendo. The software looks sleek (from what we've seen) and it works with everything (supposedly), so there is no reason for a hard-core gamer to go ga-ga over Wii-U's concept. Their system at best will compete with the current gen 360/PS3, but I highly doubt will compete with the next-gen Xbox/Sony systems which means Nintendo is behind the times again. The problem this time, though, is that they don't have the revolutionary movement system that no one else has to drive up sales. They'll definitely sell to the casual market and Nintendo-fans.. but I see that casual market being picked apart by facebook, mobile gaming, and what Microsoft is doing with all of the 'extras' that Xbox brings.
I could be wrong, but I think Microsoft is about to blow everyone else out of the water in the next few years.
Watch Dogs looked fantastic. AC3 looked amazing as well, but we all knew it would. Not many other games really piqued my interest (and the ones that did were mostly other system exclusives... ie LoU.)
I would have liked to see something from Rocksmith, BandFuse, and GTA5... but so far not looking like that'll happen.

Look at this.. Sony's stock goes up after E3 - http://twitter.com/N4G/statuses/210563608730550274 _________________

Totally agreed. I just got in to the Beta less than a week ago, and I've already started hammering away playing it.
It's surprising, I'm a HUGE fan of Valve games, but I've never been fond of realistic shooters. I've owned all of the other CS games for years now, and have just never played them. But for some reason GO struck with me, and I love it. At 15 bucks, I'll definitely be picking it up. _________________

I've gotten exactly two things from E3 this year (because my interest in gaming has plummeted):
1.) Everything Nintendo tries to do is awful.
2.) Madden 13 looks absolutely gorgeous, and I'm super excited for it to come out, especially since I won't be in school so I won't have to worry about it interfering with my non-existent schoolwork. _________________

Yeah, that's kind of like saying "I know exactly what this Ferarri needs, a clown horn and a My Little Pony paint job!"
For the record, I think Internet Explorer is better than My Little Pony. You can actually use Internet Explorer to look up things besides ponies. Like midget porn. |
shut up matt.
and hey look everything is really just a shooter game who cares _________________

JEALOUS! I have been wanting a key for a long time.
I've seen some streams on it, and I can't WAIT for this game to come out. _________________
