Well that's troubling. Hopefully for MS's sake they figure something out. Hopefully the fact that people aren't agreeing with them.

Interesting theory that seems based mostly on speculation: "This was never about video games for Microsoft. Xbox One is a "multimedia entertainment center," not a gaming platform. Gaming is secondary. They want you to be using Microsoft products for everything: internet, TV, computer operating systems. Microsoft is trying to one-up Google and Apple with this, they don't care about Sony or Nintendo. Xbox was just a preexisting brand name they could hitch the idea on and gain success with."

Might explain their foot in mouth disease.

On top of everything that's been stated thus far, there's been numerous witness accounts that various Xbox One demos at E3 crashed after relatively short play sessions (one of which even saying that it crashed to a Windows 7 desktop of all things). If they can't even get properly working units to the event where it matters most, how can we be sure that they're even bothering optimizing the console for launch?

Based on various replies the indication is that the game was being run on a PC and not an actual Xbox One. What that means is ambiguous since it says nothing about the One itself other than PCs can run its games, likely through developer specific resources. The One itself probably won't be running Win7. (It might be an indication that MS didn't have enough One units available for E3 use. Or if it was a third party, that THEY didn't have actual One units for E3 use.)

Might also be specific to that particular game's demo area. I assume not every game's are had the consoles themselves concealed.

That sounds like a dev station not able to handle the heat/enclosed area. A lot of dev stations are specialized computers, and with everything being X86, its even moreso now. The original xbox blue screened during their conference years ago.

I think it's pretty much common knowledge that everything shown at E3 is shown on PC, so crashes don't mean much other than game builds are unstable (if you've ever watched Indie Game: The Movie you can see how much of a nightmare this is even with a good game like Fez). Final games, etc are not finished for the consoles at this point so they can't be shown. Surely you don't think the guys up on stage with controllers are actually playing right (this was painfully obvious back when they were showing off Kinect)? You'll notice devs get around this by saying "in engine gameplay" which isn't a lie.

I'm not on board with X1, but their performance of certain games at E3 isn't indicative of what the final product will be (although it is embarrassing).

Apparently most (if not all) PS4 games were actually running on dev kits. But it's been rumored for a while that microsoft is a bit behind when it comes to their dev tools.
It probably doesn't mean anything at all for the actual launch though, at most it's a minor inconvenience.

Fake edit: Actually it might not be that common to run on PCs (https://twitter.com/AeornFlippout/status/345677582206910464) this guy has worked on MW3, Singularity, X-Men Origins to name a few and says all their E3 games has always been run on dev kits or the actual console.

Still don't think it'll mean a lot for launch though, most likely it's just like inv4der said and they just don't have enough dev kits to use at this point.

Real edit: This guy says most XBone games actually run on devkits https://twitter.com/Gahadmor/status/345680185443627009 maybe it's just the games not in the actual sony/microsoft booths that run on PCs because it'd be easier for them?

EDIT: scratch that, it's official

http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/update

Quote:

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.

still not the console for me but this is looking a LOT better, especially removing region locks

Good on them for removing all that crap, so now everything is basically exactly like it was this gen for both systems then. Should be a fun launch

edit: Oh and the region locking being removed too, that's a good move.

FlannelJacket beat me to the punch. Yes, this looks like a great step forward.

Now the pros and cons between the PS4 and the Xbox One seem a bit more balanced. The PS4 is cheaper, but with the Xbox One you also get Kinect (which, like it or not, is a feature that may be worth money to a lot of people). Now I don't have to choose which one to buy based on the longevity of the console or my ability to share with friends.

Yeah it really does come down to what exclusives you want now for most people (the PS4 is still a bit more powerful in theory but that will most likely not show for years anyway). Either way this is great for every single person that plays games and a nice victory for consumer rights.

They got rid of family sharing D: (by the sounds of it. Not explicitly stated). Why get rid of the one good thing they had going for them lol.

Even though this is probably the best thing Microsoft could have done, kinda disappointed to see them not stick to their guns and keep their decision. It'll be interesting to see where they take the console now though, considering their main philosophy with it has completely changed.

I may be swayed back now. The used game thing I didnt care much about but the online thing was the killer for me. My connection is horrible at best so as long as that was there, it was a no go.

Now the kinect thing might be the winner for me. $100 more but the wife would love to play the dance games so they might be the winner.

Granted im still not buying one for at least a year or 2 anyways, till the price goes less than $400 (at the very least). 3DS keeps me happy

It would be stupid to remove those types of incentives for digital downloads, since they're so desperate to convince people to switch to digital instead of physical copies.
