|
|
This all started with a squeaky strum bar. I opened up the guitar, fixed the bar, and realized how easy it would be to paint. This was my first experience spray painting anything, I just followed the instructions on the back of the can and used tons of painters tape. If you can't tell, its supposed to be the Rising Sun skin found on the Explorer in the game. The SG is no Explorer, but I thought it'd look good anyway. Without further ado:
I didn't touch the fretboard or fret buttons because I was too afraid of getting them sticky. Its a bit of paranoia, but I like to have a working guitar. Special thanks to my brother, who photoshoped the rising sun stencil and helped with the taping, my tech teacher, who gave me the sandpaper, and my parents, who put up with the garage smelling like spray paint. |

Sweet man. You may have a better guitar than me, but I can still beat you anyday! Haha! [Except for that one time on Cowboys From Hell, which doesn't count.] |

You wouldn't happen to have that stencil saved would you? I had the same idea for my guitar (since I'm not getting the 360 version). How easy was it to reassemble? Is the paint holding up well -- how many coats did you use? |

Yeah, if you still had the stencil and could put it up I'd love you for forever. And what kind of spray paint/how many coats did you use? My last paint job didn't work out so well and the spray paint was crap. _________________

I've seen on the EB games site that they're will have a "skin" like the Rising sun for the guitar. I've seen another one but I don't remember wich. It's supposed to get out with GHII and also a wireless controller
Edit : the 2 skins available will be sunburst and wild spiral |

Hey AlCapwned and HylianHero, here's the stencil:
Just resize it to fit a 8.5x11 sheet of paper, and trace out the edges of the rays to the edge of the paper.
As for the paints, they went like such:
White - Krylon Semi-Gloss
Black - Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Multi Purpose
Red - Rust-Oleum American Accents (the technical color name is paprika)
Gloss Coat - Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Multi Purpose
I must've used three or four coats of paint, and then two coats of gloss. I didn't count, but if I saw a little black through the paint, or if I missed a spot, I'd slap on another coat. I only did two coats of black on the buttons, and I still had to sand out where the start and select buttons go so they wouldn't stick.
The paint is holding up really well, and I attribute that to the gloss coat. You can't see it that well in the pictures, but it made the guitar nice'n'shiny, and it protects the colors underneath. The only drawback is that the gloss coat dried a little rough in some areas, and I'd need a finer grit sandpaper than 220 to smooth it out. But I only have 220 and don't feel like running to the hardware store...
If anyone else paints the Rising Sun, just remember to do the stencil in light pencil on the guitar, then remove the pick guard and paint it separately. I was a n00b on the first coat, but I caught myself before any damage was done.
And I say psh to vinyl skins. Theres no pride in a giant sticker. No offense to anyone who plans to get one, but a paint job is the way to go. They're easy enough, and if I could pull it off, anyone can pull it off.
cheers, and GL fellow artists!

About how long did you spend sanding it down before painting? Or did you not do that at all?
(I've done a paint job but it ended up kinda...meh. Hence, why I need to know what I did wrong. _________________

Did you paint the whole thing white first? And when you painted the red part, did you just put the stencil there and painted or did you tape the sections between lines? |
