We originally built Nimrod, the first in a series of modded Xplorers, for the WSVG LA competition, but as that didnt happen, I thought I'd show it off here instead. For those of of you who want to cut the to chase, here's a video with the various light effects in action (stay with it to the end, it only gets better...)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYl2bOOZ_Pw

OVERVIEW OF MODS
Performance mods
The strum bar is padded (or rather the surface strum meets guitar) with plastic to remove the "clack"ing and and rubber to provide bounce-back (a bit like on the Les Paul but better)

The frets are completely redone with real microswitches for increased precision and higher fretting speed, instead of the junk that was there to begin with.

Travel of original frets are something like 2-3 mm, while our new ones have ~0.2 mm. Frets now also have a distinct click exactly when the switch activates both upon press and release (for pull offs). The new microswitches also requried remaking the actual fret-buttons, here with the body form welded in pmma plastic with a cap of pvc. New Fret buttons also have a more distinct phasing to allow for easier sliding.

The Whammy has the basic Xplorer whammy mods, i.e. tilted a bit to tighten it up.

Visual Mods
The paint job is pretty standard. Black, with Misfits skull motif on back, base coat, 4 layers black, 3 layers clear exluding tack coats

The pick guard is replaced with a combination of pwc, plastic film and thin paper to provide a white-ish semi-transparent surface. Beneath the pick guard we have installed to purple cold cathode lights.

The frets have inside them the highest power diods I could find on the market (350 mA, 10$ a piece) in the color of the corresponding fret.

Control system and software
The whole guitar is run by a PIC controlling to begin with all light effects. The software takes input from the user with the black button right above the strum-bar used for switching modes of the visual displays. Don't try this at home kids...

As the whole guitar is internally wired through the PIC this means that I can do tapping buttons as a mode in software without any additional wiring. My tapping buttons are different from the earlier mods in that they can
1) Ignore strums that come close to the button press
2) Ignore taps that come to close together (means you can tap chords)
3) Strums also on HO (even if a button is already pressed) and
4) Strums also on PO

Peripherials
Star Power is activated by a foot pedal (a real guitar foot pedal rebuilt, they cried in the store when they heard what I was gonna use it for) that is plugged in through the pedal port on the Xplorer

Also have a gig bag in imitation leather to go with the guitar tailor made in the phillipines.

Let me know if there are any specifi parts you want more info on.

As much as I would love to bask in the glory of this, in my mind quite decent, guitar, most of the credit actually goes to my friend GrandMasterPimp, contributed most of the ideas, knowledge, skill and equipment that has made this possible.

Well, we brainstormed, we thought, we planned, we tested, we soldered, we drilled, we dremelled, we programmed, we debugged, we sweated and we swore....

...so tell us its great[/img]

Wow. That is crazy. ....Wow. I do have a question though. Can you explain HOW you made the star power footpedal? I have read the guides, but I can't comprehend enough as to how they did it. Thanks.

At first I just thought "Hmm...nice paintjob", and then when part of the guitar was glowing I was like, "OMFG! How did you do that?". Then when the frets started glowing, I realized that you alone are the cause of global l33tness.

Could you go a little more into detail on the frets? I would love to have those and play at school for a Science project That'd be the funnest 100% I ever got in school ever. Not to mention my mom would totally pay for it since it's school-related. Please do elaborate. My main questions are:
1: Where do you get those transparent frets/how do I make them?
2: After I buy the diodes, what will I do with them?
3: How do I make them light up at the same time I hit the frets?
4: How would I make a switch to turn it off and on?

Thanks.
