Hah, um, if the tournament is singles, I don't see how you can automatically count me out for top two. I don't know what the format is though.

JGross: (or Quack or Sephi or anyone if you've heard details)
What is the format? Singles on separate TVs (like MGC), pro-faceoff, cooperative? The main question I have about the rules, depending on the format, is about the use of hyperspeed.

I am really glad to see that some major competition will be at this event (three top 20 scorehero players it seems). I hope big, competitive GH2 tournaments continue to happen.

Check the tournament forum for my January Tournament. The Frets on Ice. It's gonna have a lot of great players too!

We are using a format similar to MGC. The rules are on the site:

MGC will be expanded in 2007. We plan to use GH2.

For the lazy ones......:

RULES:
1. All songs will be played on the expert level.

2. The tournament will consist of one single elimination bracket.

3. Tournament Brackets will be seeded based by score on a qualifying song. If there are more than 64 competitors, only the top 64 will advance to the elimination bracket.

4. Players will compete on a head to head basis (Pro Face-Off). Rounds will consist on two songs played with each player choosing one song of his/her choice. Players will play their song choice in conjunction with their opponent’s song choice. Once a player uses a song as a choice, he/she is no longer permitted to choose that song for the remainder of the tournament. Both players may not choose the same song, and the player with the highest combined score will advance.

5. In the case of a tie, a predetermined tie breaker song will be played on the expert level.

6. In the event of a failed song, the play will receive the percentage completed multiplied by 10,000 (example: 50% completed would give a score of 50,000).

7. Abuse of the equipment will not be tolerated and such behavior will result in immediate disqualification and removal.

8. Disruption of another player’s game will result in immediate disqualification.

9. The standard Guitar Hero controller will be available but it is recommended that all players bring their own controller.

10. Abusive behavior, foul language is not allowed. Such behavior may be subject to disqualification and/or removal from the tournament grounds at the game manager’s discretion.

11. VGL reserves the right to add or remove any rules as needed.

Shitty prizes, but I'll try to be there.

To elaborate on the prizes thing.

How are you going to make the prize something that you have to already own if you want any chance of winning that prize?

Sure it's nice to have a spare guitar or two but...c'mon.

They always do that. I've won two SG's and one copy of the game from tournaments. They're never organized correctly.

To be fair, tourneys don't generate much cash, and rounding up sponsorships is a tough job. No one's going to pony up major prizes for a GH2 tourney unless they can be convinced it'll draw a large audience.

So having a GH2 event at the CPL, even with small prizes, is actually a good opportunity for the best players to come out and put on a good show. There will be plenty of sponsors on hand, and having a good buzz around a GH2 tourney is a good step towards convincing sponsors to get involved in future GH2 events.

Personally, I couldn't care less about prizes. I won the GH1 tourney at QuakeCon 2006 and donated my winnings to the volunteer staff. I was just happy to be competing against other Expert players, and getting to play in the final on stage in front of 1000 cheering people was something I'll never forget.
