Anyone else having a problem with the snare/red pad? My red pad frequently doesn't register hits (regular hits, not hits in rolls), regularly breaking streaks even on easy songs. This isn't a lag issue--I'll hit every single other note on the drums, but the red pad just won't register. It also doesn't seem to matter how hard I hit it.
Also, because I don't really feel like going through the warranty system on this, has anyone tried the MIDI in switch on their drums yet with a real drum set? Does it work? How does it work? I have a real e-drum set, but it's a pain in the ass to move to the room with the XBox and I'd prefer not to until I know it'll work. |

| I'm having the same problem. And what's worse is there's writing (in pen) on the outside of the box it came in, so I know it went through QA. Come on, guys. |

Same here. There are major issues with Red and there's also crosstalk between Red and Yellow. Terrible. _________________

There was already a mention of a firmware update coming out shortly after launch. it's in the wiki.
"We did have some minor issues with either dropped hits or crosstalk in some of the kits that we played with however a great solution is already in the works to rectify this. Through a software program on your computer, you will be able to adjust the sensitivity settings for the drums, and save them to the firmware built into the drum kit. Various settings like Sensitivity, Threshold, and Cross Talk were available with a range of 1-100, 1 being the most sensitive. You can change the settings for each pad/cymbal/pedal individually. This program will be available for free shortly after game launch from guitarhero.com." |

My question, however is - how will the drums connect to the PC? |

| Maybe the software program is needed for the MIDI in to work. |

That is a very good question. It never crossed my mind. |

While I'm not quite ready to jump upon the "OMG BROKEN OUT OF THE BOX" bandwagon, even on medium drums I noticed my red pad doing major droppage even on simple stuff, in both GHWT and RB2 last night. I also had pen on my drums box. Yikes.
Granted, if I hit just a little harder, it works on the easy stuff, but anything harder will be a joke. I just hope this "firmware update" thing actually fixes stuff, or we'll have a RB1 RMA crisis again... _________________

It works beautifully. I have a Roland TD-6 module, and if I set it preset kit #1 (called AcuStick) the bass maps to bass (purple) , snare to red, hi-hat (open) to yellow, Tom-1 to blue, Tom2 to green, and crash to orange.
Velocity sensitivity seems correct as well.
The crash I'm using is dual-trigger, and it seems to recognize either a 'bell' hit or a 'edge' hit as an orange. So that's nice, too.
I'm unskilled in navigating the menus of the TD6; I can't currently get you the actual midi notes it's outputting, but it definitely works like a champ straight out of the box for me.
EDIT: also - the kit disassembles super-easy if you, like me, just want the controller board and not the whole drumkit sitting out next to your e-kit. (no pictures atm -- i'm sure someone will get some soon if they haven't already, but there's just a bunch of screws on the back - no 'hidden' ones or anything, and some hot-glue holding the pads connections in place on the inside, which chips off easily.) |

Here is the note mapping:
Red=38
Yellow=46
Blue=48
Orange=49 (unused in Rock Band)
Green=45
Purple=36 (orange in Rock Band)
I'm glad to hear that it's easy to take apart. That will be tomorrows project. |

Some crappy cell-phone pics to demonstrate just how easy it is:
Apologies for the tiny size -- I didn't realize they were that small until after I'd already re-assembled everything, and I'm pretty lazy.

The required components fit easily into a $3.99 project box from Radio Shack - I think it's a 5x2.5x2" one. As you can see (hopefully) the controller part is all self contained. I just cut a slot for the wire to feed through, and a hole for the midi port to snap into, and used some plastic weld epoxy to mount the project box to the controller part. Total time, 10minutes if you have a dremel and a file. another 10 minutes later to sand it smooth, if you care about such things, and maybe a coat of spray paint to make it seemless. |

Does anybody know how to do this for the Simmons SD5K? |
