|
|
I recently got a 3x3 Rubik's Cube, and was surprised at how much easier it is to solve than it was when I was way younger. After practice, I can solve this thing in about 3 minutes. I have yet to work on a 4x4, but the simple question is, has anyone ever solved a Rubik's Cube? _________________

haha, don't even get me started! I can get under a minute pretty easily at this point, but in my prime, i could solve it under 45 seconds... I can also solve a 4x4 (kinda) but i need help on one or two steps for that
ps. i also use the layer by layer method, it's all about finger tricks _________________

A random solve by me. (This is a layer by layer solve by the way).
Rubik's cubes are very fun, and I was actually pretty decent at it last year. Unfortunately I slacked off over the summer, and I average about a minute now (last year I was averaging about 40 seconds). _________________

I was actually inspired by a thread in this very forum many months back, I dusted off a cube my dad had from way back when and learnt how to do it, I think my best time was about 1:30 but that was kinda a fluke, I'm probably averaging somewhere around 2:00. Haven't done it in ages though, will probs get back into it soon... _________________

I heard of some guy at my school that is like, 3rd in the nation, and can solve it in around 14 seconds on average. Plus i heard he plays guitar hero... doubt he's on scorehero though _________________

I generally do a 3x3x3 cube in about 5 minutes, obviously not nearly as impressive as the rest of you guys in this thread, but I can do it. I've never tried a 4x4x4 cube, and I think there is a 5x5x5 cube as well. I still tend to get kinda hung up on the 3x3x3 one so I probably can't solve anything more.
For the veterans of this website, you may remember our former admin Matt, he was really good with all types of cubes as well. I've also watched eXcelon solve one on stream in about a minute and a half, he's good as well. eX also has an assortment of other 3x3x3 cubes that don't have the conventional solid colors, things like logos and whatnot, pretty cool, and challenging as well (as you're not putting colors together, but patterns at times). _________________

My record is 36 seconds and I average 50 seconds. I use C(ross)F(2L)O(rient)P(ermute). I remember the last time a thread like this came up it was what pushed me to learn to solve it in the first place. Ahh good times. _________________

Have you memorized all the OLLs and PLLs? If so you should be screaming fast, like sub 40 on average.
anyway, i've kind of strayed from solving to more of a modding/collecting/entrepreneurship mentality with my cubes. I just finished my second mod (a fisher cube, video here) and a few months ago i finished my first mod, a half truncated cube, video here.
I do solve my cubes often, usually to and from classes and during frees at school, but occasionally i'll sit down and do a few solves at home as well. I usually average 75 seconds or so but i know i can do sub-60 if i had a 3x3 with stickers.
As for the collecting piece: there are so many more twisty puzzles out there other than rubik's cubes. For example, www.mefferts.com sells a TON of crazy types of puzzles, and www.v-vubes.com recently started selling the first 7x7x7 and 6x6x6 cubes. I've got a decent sized list of puzzles i want for christmas.
Also, the entrepreneur piece is pretty interesting. I've recently become aware that there are collectors who pay inordinate amounts of money for rare/semi-unique puzzles, sometimes ranging into the 100s of dollars and, in very rare cases, past $1000. I cannot make any puzzles in the 1000s range, but quite a few of mods that i know for a FACT i can do are worth a couple hundred dollars. So i'm going to keep myself afloat on that until i go to college.
yeah, i'm kind of a Twisty puzzle nerd. So?

Well, the last time I solved one was in 7th grade, and my fastest time was 2:20. I always wanted to get another one since the stickers fades out on that one. _________________
