As cool as it would be to have those old covers and charts again on my Wii, I have to admit I prefer playing along to masters rather than covers. Let's face it, some of those covers on GH and GH2 were just baaaad.

I mean no disrespect to the GH veterans here, but honestly, if you want to play the old covers/charts, can't you just pop in that old GH disc in the old PS2 and give it another spin? I thought that you guys weren't playing GH any more because it "isn't your cup of tea." :P

I can see getting the ability to play the other instruments with the covers, but wouldn't you rather get something that's not the same old thing on guitar that you've been playing for years? I vote for a new game experience on guitar - give us the masters.

It is not a Greatest Hits without a remake of the original GH1 character models.
ESPECIALLY the original Grim Ripper.[/url]

There were issues with it in GH1. Specifically, Hendrix's estate thought the singer was either too close or too far off (I forget which), and also did not want the singer to be anyone but Jimmy (generic guy was a no-no).

Now that they have a model of Hendrix compatible with the GHWT engine (which the game will undoubtedly use), it's only logical to assume that they'd at least try to get Spanish Castle Magic.

I think it was both. First it was too bad, then too Good, then just...yeah

Whats the point in that? Seriously. If you want the same chart, put the old game back in. Otherwise you're just paying money to play exactly what you already have.

I'm not massively keen on the idea overall. I'll have to see what they go with before I decide its a must/no buy.

Do drums and vocals ring a bell

There could be people like me, who have six year old PS2's that don't work all the time who don't want to have to deal with the glitch where the fretboard freezes and the audio gets out of sync, which makes it more of a hassle than it's worth to play the games. Also, I bet a lot of people got rid of their PS2's when they got a newer system. Especially those who bought PS3's, they get all that backwards compatibility and stuff. And the biggest point: Drums and vocals. Not like I play drums or sing, but I don't really care much. If buying this means getting the same charts and fun I got out of past games, I'd do it.

A LOT of the covers I like better because I played for so much (and barely listen to the master).

I DO prefer CfH, H18 and Free Bird covers since I've played them over and over and over. I don't know, got used to it.

I love the fact that activision is milking the franchise and pumping out lot of full games a year, because it means more tracks that i can spend my money on at a lower cost than DLC. Point at which this game would become very exciting for me would be 50+ songs on it, and bonus if its weighted towards the older stuff (so a lot more GH1 and GH2 than say GH3 and GH:A). Pull out the couple songs from GH1 that have been already redone in RB2 (Ace of Spades, MTAF, YGATC etc) and id be happy with the entire GH1 main setlist showing up in this. Probably less likely to see very many (if any) of the bonus bands fromt he HMX era showing up (esp the HMX employee ones), but be cool if they did work hard with the bands to get the real classics on there (Freezepop, honest bob, bang camaro, shaimus, elephant bones, red lottery, etc). I think it would be a good 'make nice' considering the executive sniping between the idiot execs at both companies, plus it could be very profitable for the bands themselves. Just as likely to see no bonus songs from the HMX games at all as to see a handful (which is probably the best case).

Also, the best part about this is that youd see some of the GHWT chart innovations make it into the songs, like open notes, and continuing sustains (personally torn on purple rope but i doubt it would be goign away). While i see the nostalgic appeal in playing an exact replica of old charts, and this would b especially interesting for GH1 songs since you'd have a working HOPO system, the benefit of being able to say play YYZ on bass with open notes is much higher in my judgement. Aside from the engine issue with GH1, theres no reason why anybody who is nostalgic for the old experience of these charts cant just pull out the ol' PS2 and pop those discs in to play for a night (did this with GH2 just the other day for the first time since GH3 came out).

Its interesting that everybody (and i realize its not everybody, but the kotaku article is just dripping with it, but what do i expect ts kotaku) trashes on activision for milking the cash cow of the franchise for releasing say three games in one year (plus the DS version), when that is probably much less total songs than HMX will release this year for RB2 as DLC and at a much higher unit pricepoint per song. Further I expect that those people making that argument typically are not only not accusing HMX/MTV of milking a cash cow but actually praising them for it as they go on to spend the same amount of money as it would cost to buy all three GH games on roughly half the number of RB2 DLC songs (50+50+85 = 185 songs for ~$180 for GH, and $180 buys you 90 songs at the $2 price point or ~130 songs if you average cost is ~1.50 per track if you are buying significant $1 sogns and bundles that end up at usually $1.65-$1.85 per track) or buying all or nearly all the songs anyways in RB2 and paying double the price those would be if they were arranged as games of 50-85 songs each. It cant of course help that Bobby Kotchik (or whatever his name is) seems to be a triple AAA asshole in the way he comports himself to fans and his competitors, but oh well.

Personally i think neither one is milking the cash cow, they are just determining somthing that people might want ot buy via market research/knowledge of the industry, producing it, and then selling it at a price where they can generate enough sales to maximize their profit frm the transaction, ie capitalism in action. Even better that both companies have a slightly different method of delivery so that the consumer can differentiate between them and gravitate to purchasing the model that they like the best if they are strapped for cash and cannot easily follow both. Personally announcements such as this tend to sap further my already low desire to really buy any RB2 DLC for this year, at least until i have some idea of when a RB3 is coming, id rather save up and apply funds towards an actual new game, than towards tracks for a game ive already finished. Excepting that next time they come out with something that is narrowcasted to my precise tastes in goth/industrial (past examples: Siouxsie or NIN) im sure ill break down and buy it anyways.

EDIT:
Oh as far as 'major restage'. To me this obviously means GH5, and it means that they are going to leave open the question of making some very large gameplay or campaign structural changes. Which could range from really good smart moves (if they tear down and rebuild almost anythign rlated to the GHWT multiplayer coop gameplay and HUD) to really ominous and ill advised tinkering (messing with the core GH gameplay or scoring at a fundamental level that would make it systematically incompatible with historical GH single player). Or evn if you want to et really out there theres a small chance it could mean a big hardware change such as a keyboard peripheral or even a redesigned guitar with a 6th fret (that would certainly qualify as restage rather than a tinker).

This is great, but the worrywart in me is jumping in the back of my head screaming "what about the songs they leave out? Will they be released as DLC or will we see GH:GH2? next year?" You can't see it, but I'm in deep thought about that, rubbing my beard and whatnot.

Hopefully this isn't given the typical Guitar Hero Expansion treatment. For $60 I want them to cram as many songs as they possibly can on this disc. Call me selfish or whatever.
