This video more than accurately explains it. If you still don't get it, say so.
Pay attention to the first band on the TV. |

I swear I'm developing an obsession with last.fm, I'm on it practically any time an internet connection is available.
Also, I know I'm a few days late with saying this, but... Wrath is a fucking AWESOME album. _________________

Okay, to turn this thread away from being a list thread, what was the first metal song you listened to that made you realized "I wanna love this music"? For me, it was (sic) by Slipknot. I heard that song and I was amazed by the speed and technicality of it. Then again, I was 7 years old and I'd never heard of Derek Roddy, but I still love them. _________________

For me, it was Trivium. I'd never been hugely into music beforehand, but when I did listen to it I listened to artists such as the Kaiser Chiefs and James Blunt. My girlfriend at the time was listening to Ascendancy by Trivium, and not knowing what the music was like I borrowed an earphone. I was a little surprised by the intensity of it at first, but by the end of the song I was loving it. I couldn't get enough of the screaming vocals, unlike most people who need to be eased into them. It was at that point that I knew I loved metal (though I was told they were thrash metal and didn't discover they're actually metalcore until a good year later <_<).
I don't really listen to Trivium very much anymore, but they'll always hold a special place in my heart for being the first. I'll have to go back and listen to them again for pure nostalgia. _________________

almost embarassed to admit it, but the Underoath song on Madden 05. Then after my initial dive into metal, the next step came when I downloaded Bury the Hatchet for GH2 360.

The fact that most people get into metal through metalcore or nu-metal like Slipknot, Disturbed, Trivium, A7X, Deftones etc.
I remember for me I was into like hard rock and new rock like Zeppelin, Rush, King Crimson, Green Day, A Perfect Circle, Billy Talent, Ramones, The Clash and such. Then my friend who is a year older than me showed me Metropolis Pt. 1 by Dream Theater and I absolutely loved it. Then I got more into Dream Theater and Symphony X and into thrash (eg. Metallica who were the only thrash band I knew at the time) and then it exploded from there. Now I listen to all types of metal (except the happy folk metal bands like Tyr).
EDIT: Updated the list with everyone and added a few of you as friends as well. My username is different than here (fonghow190). _________________

Why would it matter how people get into metal? They're still into metal, are they not? ;)
For the record, I've been listening to metal for around three, maybe three and a half years now, so I'm not really a newbie (though admittedly not exactly an old timer either). _________________
