Play With Me is the last song of the last tier in Guitar Hero: Rock the 80's. As you can see, there aren't many FCs of it, since it's got a lot of notes and a lot of places to mess up.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

Information about this guide

  • This guide will contain most sections of this song;
  • This guide will contain different methods for the same parts;
  • The methods (fingerings) in this guide will be written in a more complicated form that will be explained afterwords;
  • Any questions related to the song, any method presented in this guide, any new methods or the guide itself may be asked here (Although at the end of the guide you'll find a FAQ with frequently asked questions).

How to read the methods (fingering)
As above mentioned, the fingerings that will appear in this guide will be a bit complicated. Why? So it's easier to understand the method without having more complicated 1 row 3 color fingerings. If you find these fingerings to hard to read, then please let me know via PM or a reply in this thread, I'll fix it. The methods will be written like this:

------------Strumming pattern------------
-------------------Notes--------------------
-----------------Fingering------------------
-----------------Fingering------------------
-----------------Fingering------------------
-----------------Fingering------------------

The last three fingerings won't appear every time. Let me explain it with this easy example:

hhhhhh

111111
_2_2_2

What does this mean? It means that you will hold the red note with finger #1 all the time during this trill. That also means that you will play the yellows as red-yellow chords (only in this example!).

Here is another example:

hhhhhhhhhhhh

111111111111
_222_222_222
__3___3___3_

Understood? It means that you'll anchor red all the time with finger #1, play yellow and anchor it until you play the blue with finger #2, and play the blue with finger#3.

To simplify it, think of the rows as of frets!

Legend
1-Index finger (fretting hand)
2-Middle finger (fretting hand)
3-Ring finger (fretting hand)
4-Pinky finger (fretting hand)
1-Index finger (tapping hand)
2-Middle finger (tapping hand)
0-Dominant tapping finger (For some people it's the index, for others the middle)
d-Downstrum
u-Upstrum
h-Hammer on/Pull off

Combining methods(fingering)
By combining methods, I mean that you look at 2 methods for 1 part and combine them. Here's an example:

Method 1

11111111
_2_2_3_3

Method 2

11111111
_0_0_0_0

In the first method, you do everything one-handed, in the second you tap everything. So, these 2 methods combined would look like this:

11111111
_2_2_0_0

Got it? That's how to combine methods. I'll leave the combining to you, since you know which ones are easier for you.

Now... THAT is a lot of hard sections, right? Well, let's go do them one by one, shall we?

Intro Riff

This section is pretty much fucked up, and it's the first thing this song throws over you. Try to stay calm and play it like this:

Method 1
dhhhh dhhhh dhhhhhhhhhhh d d d dhh d d d dhh dhhhh dhh

21112 31113 321232123214 2 3 4 341 3 2 1 211 22221 211
___ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ______________________3_3

Yeah, pretty much play everything from the second position. Don't worry, there are more methods.

Method 2

dhhhh dhhhh dhhhhhhhhhhh d d d dhh d d d dhh dhhhh dhh

32123 42124 321232111111 2 3 4 341 3 2 1 321 11111 321
_____ _____ _______222_3 _ _ _ ___ _ _ _ ___ _2_2_ ___
_____ _____ ________3___ _ _ _ ___ ___ _____ ___

This is just slightly different than method 1, but I find it much harder. I don't know though, I noticed that Danny (Guitar-Hero-Phenom) does almost all zig-zags like this (anchor lowest and middle note, but he releases the middle note to hit the lowest), so give it a try.

Method 3

dhhhh dhhhh dhhhhhhhhhhh d d d dhh d d d dhh dhhhh dhh

21112 31113 321221111111 1 2 3 231 3 2 1 211 2222 211
_____ _____ ________2__4 _ _ _ ___ _ _ _ ___ _3_3 ___

This method is for people who are good at sliding. Note that some people find it easier to NOT anchor the yellow when hitting the blue in the zig-zag!

Method 4

dhhhh dhhhh dhhhhhhhhhhh d d d dhh d d d dhh dhhhh dhh

32123 42124 321232111111 2 3 4 341 3 2 1 321 11111 321
_____ _____ _______222__ _ _ _ _ _ _ _____ _ _0_0_ ___
_____ _____ ________0___ _ _ _ ___ ___ ___ _____ ___

For all you tapping addicts !

Note that this section has various difficult parts, and that you can combine some of these methods to get the perfect method for you. See combining methods for more information.

Chorus a strumming

-----

By "Chorus a strumming" I mean this and other similar parts (I'll show them all here). You can downstrum all of these parts, but people usually alt-strum. So, here are these parts:

dudududud
-----

dudududududud
----

dudududududu
----

So, if you choose to downstrum all of these, then you won't have any complications.

For all of you alt-strummers, however, you'll notice that you downstrum every chord and upstrum every red except in.... the last one! So, in the last one, I recommend downstrumming it all or this strumming pattern:

dudududududd
----

This shouldn't be too hard now! These parts are vital for the 5*. Remember that the first one repeats in both chorus 1 and chorus 2!!!

Chorus b strumming

----- _ -----

This is pretty much simple. I downstrum it all. But alt-strummers prefer this one:

d-----dududududud _ d d-----dududududud
----- _ -----

The fact that you end on a downstrum makes it even more simple ! This part is vital for the 5*.

Chorus 2a hard part

Woo, pretty fucked up. I remember having trouble learning this part, and my main problem was that I pressed red too early after the YB chords. Don't worry, I have some methods for you:

Method 1

ddhhhhhhhhhhhdhhhhdhhdhhdhhdhhdhh

111112123234333333211211211211211
______________4_4_3__3__3__3__3__

Yeah, everything from second position. Some people find it easier not to anchor blue at all! I used this method back then....

Method 2

ddhhhhhhhhhhhdhhhhdhhdhhdhhdhhdhh

111111122233333333321321321321321
__2__2__3__4__4_4_4__4__4__4__4__

This is for all anchor-whores out there :P. Some people even anchor everything from red to blue, you get the idea !

Method 3

ddhhhhhhhhhhhdhhhhdhhdhhdhhdhhdhh

111111111111111111321321321321321
__2_222222222222224__4__4__4__4__
_____3_33333333333_______________
________4_44444444_______________
___________0__0_0________________

Yeah, anchor everything from green to blue and tap the oranges. You have to have a really quick tapping arm because you have to bring it back from orange to the strum bar in order to strum the chords.
Maybe it'll help to use this technique if I group it like this:

Well? Now you should understand more effectively how to use method 3. Good luck with this part !

Chorus 4a hard part

Similar to the Chorus 2a hard part, but a lot faster! (Well, not that much... but still, faster).

Method 1

d h h h h h hhhhhhhhhhhhdhdh dhhdh dhh

1 1 1 2 1 2 1112123243333232 32132 321
_ _ _ _ _ _ __________4_4_4_ 4__4_ 4__

As usual, the first method is the common 2nd position one. However, some people find it easier not to anchor the blue note.

Method 2

d h h h h h hhhhhhhhhhhhdhdh dhhdh dhh

2 1 2 2 1 2 2122122132222121 21121 211
_ _ _ _ _ _ __________3_3_3_ 3__3_ 3__

If you look closely, you'll notice that the first half of this section is made out of triangles with 2 higher notes and one lower (higher-lower-higher, e.g. red-green-red). You should keep that in mind when using this method, since you do every triangle with 212.

I realize that only 2 methods aren't much for such a hard part, but I really can't think of another one. If you have more methods, PM me or post them here.

Chorus 4b hard part

Now these are just common triplets. Even though considered hard, let me tell you that I FC'd them on sightread, so nothing to worry about !

Method 1

dd dhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh h h h h h h h

11 2113213213213214213214213214213214211 1 2 3 1 2 3 4
_2
This time the first method isn't the 2nd position method, but it is a non-anchor method. This is the method I used to FC this.

Method 2

dd dhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh h h h h h h h

22 3211111111111111111111113211111111111 2 3 4 1 2 3 4
_3 ___32_32_32_32_42_32_42____42_32_42__ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Anchor the lowest note except in the first YRG and the first BYR triplet (cuz it's easier like this ).

Method 3

dd dhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh h h h h h h h

11 211111111111111111111111_211111111111 1 2 3 1 2 3 4
_2 ___02_02_02_02_02_02_02_0__02_02_02

This is the common triplet tapping method. Tap the highest one with your dominant tapping finger and hit the middle one with your middle finger of the strumming hand.

Method 4

dd dhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh h h h h h h h

22 321111111111111111111111__11111111111 2 3 4 1 2 3 4
_3 ___21_21_21_21_21_21_21_212222222222_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
__ ___________________________21_21_21__ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Hello, weirdos. Not to confuse you, here you anchor the green note all the time with 1, and you anchor the red note when you hit it first time. The 2 higher notes in every triplet are tapped with 1 & 2 on your tapping arm. Yeah, I know, it's ultra-weird, but maybe you'll find it the easiest ....

Solo A

===

Yeah, this section is pretty much considered the hardest section of the song. So, let's go to the methods. Remember, take a look at the strumming pattern rather than the fingering pattern here.

Method 1

dudududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududud d dud d d___ d d
===
111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111 3 111 2 4___ 3 4
22__22__33__44__44__33__22__22__22__33__44__33__22__22__22__33__22__44__33__22__44__33__22__1

This is the most common way to do it. But I used a different method (Method 2).

Method 2

ududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududududh d dud d d___ d d
===
111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111 3 111 2 4___ 3 4

Fingering is pretty much the same as in method 1. But, look what happens if I start on an up-strum. I down-strum every second green and every first higher note, making the changes between the notes easier. But, in order to prevent ending the strum on an up-strum, I use the last Ho/Po (the red).

Method 3

duhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdhdh d dud h d___ d d
===
221122113311441144113311221122112211331144113311221122112211331122114411331122114411331122112 3 111 2 4___ 3 4

Yeah, this method is simply using all the Ho/Po's. Pretty hard if you ask me, I never managed to combo it like this. But I met a guy who's doing it like this, so yeah. Also, ShonSuperStar finds it easier not to anchor the green in the Misirlou Guitar Breaks, so it may work for this section too, since it's pretty much the same! Good luck with this solo !

Solo B

I consider it a really easy section.

Method 1

dhhhhhh dhhhhhhhhh dhh

1112123 2111111111 211
_______ ___2__2_22 ___
_______ _________3
Yeah, the common 2nd position method. Although you do stay in first position for a while in this one.

Method 2

dhhhhhh dhhhhhhhhh dhh

2123123 3212123123 321

Using this technique, you're taking advantage of the triplets that are hidden in this solo. Pay attention to all the parts that are played with 123 or 321. They're all triplets.

Method 3

dhhhhhh dhhhhhhhhh dhh

1111111 2111111111 211
___2_23 ___2__2_23 ___

For all anchor-whores =P.

Solo C

Long, but easy. The hardest part for me to learn was the transition from G to Y near the beginning. I always hit the yellow too early, so keep that in mind when playing this.

Method 1

dhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

111111111111212222222221111111111111111111111111
___2_222_2______________2__2_222_2__2__3_333_3__
______3________3_343_3________4___________4_____

Yeah, this method is again for all the anchor-whores, but IMO it's the easiest to use on this part.

Honestly, I see no other method to play this. If you have one that's really good, then PM it to me. The only other technique I can think of is to play it all from second position without anchoring anything, but that doesn't need charting, does it?

Solo D

This is considered the second hardest part of the solo. Just like in Solo A, pay attention to the strumming pattern.

Method 1

dhh dhh dhh dhh dhh dhhhdudududud dhdududuhh

333 222 111 111 111 1121111133221 1233112211
_4_ _3_ _2_ _3_ _2_

This is how most people do it. I don't. I do it just like jameslikecoulter (Not sure about fretting, but I strum like him) !

Method 2

dhh dhh dhh dhh dhh dhhhhdhdhdhdh dhhdhdhdhh

111 111 111 111 111 1121111133221 1233112211
_2_ _2_ _2_ _2_ _2_

This method is using all the Ho/Po's. It's relative hard and it's not how I'm doing it either.

Method 3

dhh dhh dhh dhh dhh dhhhdudududud dhhdhdhdhh

343 232 121 121 121 1121111133221 1233112211

Yeah, this is how I do it! Worked for me every time. I'm pretty sure jameslikecoulter strums it like me but he anchors the lower note in the triangles on the beginning.

3 methods should be enough. Enough with this solo already! Good luck !

Solo E

Hooray for some 4 note zig-zags!

This may seem weird at the first view, but later you'll realize that it's actually a nice technique for people who suck at doing OYRGRYO zig-zags like me, although I do this part with method 1. Good luck !

Solo F

---------

Woo, some slow-to-fast action. How I hated this solo just because it's retarded end.... eh whatever, I managed to get it somehow.

Well, there are more techniques, but you shouldn't have any problems with this solo if you're going for the FC (you might have some issues with the end if you're going for the 5*). Good luck !

Chorus 5a

----

Yeah, you'll notice a slight difference between this chorus and the other choruses.... yeah. Woohoo for my favorite section! IIRC this is considered the 2nd hardest technique in the whole song, just after solo A.

More second position? Yes. In my opinion this is the best method to play this, and I used this every time I FC'd this section, and I was fairly consistent. But if you're not a second position whore, don't worry, there are more techniques coming along.

The simplest tapping method. Nothing too difficult about it, just anchor yellow with middle finger, anchor blue with ring finger (release in order to hit yellow) and tap the orange with your dominant tapping finger. Easy, right? Well, not for me. I always pull off the blue too early in order to hit yellow, so I miss both. Keep that in mind if you decide to use this technique.

Yeah, this one is for slide-anchor-whores. It works for some people though, so give it a try .

Method 7

Oh God.... yeah, this one is similar to method 7 for Chorus 5a..... anyway, I'm done with these choruses... too much techniques .... Good luck !

Chorus 5c

-----

This one is simple.

Method 1

dhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
-----
43214321432143214321432143214321321432143211

This is probably the best method to play this. Do every scale with your 4 fingers. It's easier if you watch the highest note of every scale, and when it crosses the strikeline start the scale with your pinky. Follow the rhythm, it's a good song anyway! Hope you understand what this means.

Method 2

dhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
-----
43214321321132114321432132113211211321143211

Hello 2nd position whores. Long time no see .

Method 3 (By Simpsonfreak17)

dhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

21212121132113212121212113211321321132121321

Holy shit!

Good luck!

Outro b

Are we done? Almost... oh finally, after 2 days of writing techniques! This is the last thing that this song throws at you, and it's easier to fuck up here than in Cliffs of Dover's One Last Solo.... yeah...

Method 1

d d hhhhhd d

1 2343211 4

Okay, many people make mistakes in this part by doing them too fast. It's not as fast as it looks like! It's only 13.53 notes per second! Yes, this may look as a big number, but it isn't, really. It's the same speed as chorus 5a & 5b.

Method 2

d dududud d

1 2343211 4

7 strums, just like One's Darkness Riffs just a little faster. Good luck Mr. Green!

STAR POWER

Usage of Star Power for the 5*

If you feel that you're good enough to 5* this song, then you want to have a good path for it, right? Of course. This is the path I recommend:
3-2nd RY
3-5th RY
2-12rh R
4-Chorus 5c

Eventually, you can use this one:
2-1st GB
2-2nd R
2-2nd RB
2-12th R
4-Chorus 5c

If none of these work for you, then make up your own path, but be careful to watch which SP phases you can hit, and which parts you can combo. When making those 2 paths above, I assumed that you can take all SP phrases.

How to use Star Power if I can FC this song?
Well, are you feeling ready to go for the FC? Or did you already FC it but your score isn't near the other FCs? Well, then....

Play With Me optimal path

Play With Me Star Power discussion thread

You won't find better than these.

FAQ

Q:Why did you write this guide?
Well, there are many reasons why I wrote this guide, but the main reason is that I really really like this song and this chart. It's awesome. Other reasons:

  • There weren't any direct guides to this song (there was just one post in HellAshes Technique FAQ);
  • Only 31 FCs on the leaderboards wasn't much IMO, so I made this guide in hope to increase it's number;
  • I was bored.

Q: How good do I have to be to pass/5* Play With Me?
If you can pass the rest of 80s (especially Because, it's Midnite), then you are good enough to pass this.

Q:How good do I have to be to FC Play With Me?
Well, generally people get this FC as #25-28. But if you're playing GH80s for the first time, and you previously FC'd Beast and the Harlot, The Light that Blinds, Jordan, Hangar 18, Six, Cult of Personality, Mr. Crowley, Crazy Train, then you can get it as FC #1.

Q: How come that you haven't FC'd Play With Me yet?
Long story short: I had this game for approx. 20 days .

Q: I have a question/new method/critic about the song/guide/method; I found a mistake in the guide!
Post any questions, critics and found mistakes in this thread. New methods can be posted here and via PM. If you post a new method, I will put "by ---your username---" in brackets beside the "Method #x" in my guide.

Q:How did you write this guide?
Well, first I used this thread a little (just for the links). During the period I had this game I tried all of these methods and the ones I put up here were the ones I think are possible by human hands.

Q:Why didn't you put up a stupid question just to put up the answer "that's a stupid question" in order to copy Barbaloot in The Official Through the Fire and Flames thread?
That's a stupid question.

END
Thanks for reading this guide ! I really hope it helped some people with this song. If you want to know, it took me 3 days to complete this guide with approx. 2-3 hours of work every day.

This is awesome, and it's weird how I've been trying to FC Play With Me for the past three days.

Jesus Christ, this guide is epic. This may have been a bit more relevant a year and a half ago, but I laud your dedication and enthusiasm. I'll have to give method 2 for solo A a try as combo'ing it would give me a huge push for the 6*. I've been hungering for this FG6* for a while now, but haven't played 80s in quite some time. Thanks!

How has no one made this thread yet? This should have come out when 80s did. Not literally, but you get the idea. It is a really nice guide though.

Thanks ! About the "year and a half" thing, read the response I gave to the next poster (below).

Well, it would've been better 2 years ago, but come on, people still play GH2 & GH80s A LOT. So why not have a guide? Besides, almost every guide is for GH2 & 3, and they came out years ago. (Epic that GH3 came 2 years ago, and GH2 came 3 years ago >_>). Thanks for the positive feedback though.

Yeah 80s and GH2 are the best, with GH1 up there, too. Unfortunately I have no PS2. I do have GH2 for the 360 though.

Excellent guide, probably one of the best I've seen for a single song. You have multiple methods for each section, and I'm sure it'll help out anyone who is having trouble with one of the sections. The only solo I have trouble with is Solo A, and there's no way I'll ever be able to hit that, unfortunately.

And also, yeah, GH80's is one of my top 2 GH games easily, and if there were just a tad more songs, it would be my favorite GH game by a lot.

I think that 2 methods will be enough, since I really don't know any other method to play this.... Oh wait, I know! My friends taps it, but I have no idea how he does it, I must ask him to PM his method to me so I can put it up. Good luck!

Now this proves 2 things:
1)I forgot to PM you;
2)You didn't read the whole guide .

Now what I want you to do is to PM me your method so I can put it up here.

Thanks for your replies guys !
