|
|
I finally finished my 2nd Wireless X-Plorer controller mod.
And when I say finally, I mean it... I started painting this newly completed X-Plorer back in March after I finished making the 1st one.
Yes, I know it is now November, and it took me 7+ months to finish it...
Sometimes real life just gets in the way...
This time, I wanted to paint it all black, and change out the green controller LED's to RED ones So here it is:
It's hard (if not impossible) to tell from that picture, but this time, it is using the v1 XP controller. My 1st mod used the v2 XP controller.
To see my original post/work log of the white controller, you can check it here:

My Goals this time remained the same as the 1st one, and only added 2 things:
*) Paint it black (done!)
*) Use RED LED's (done!)
The internals of this new Wireless X-Plorer can be seen here:
It is all very similar to the 1st controller I made.

Special adjustments had to be made this time since the expansion port (phone jack) was in a different location.
This also meant that the wireless "connect" button had to be glued in place.
Other note from making this controller (again):
*) ALL 80 pin IDE cables were used this time to map buttons from circuit board to circuit board (much cleaner / easier to solder this way)
*) LESS wires were used, I found another common wire between guide/start this time
*) Again, in the neck of this guitar, the LP's fret circuit board was used.
*) The fret wires were long enough to solder directly to the LP circuit board wires this time.
*) I did not have to cut the XP circuit board to clear room for the AA batter case (used from the LP).
*) A GREAT amount of time was taken to trace connections to the back of the XP circuit board this time for LED's & buttons.
*) In total, only 16 wires are needed to go from the XP Circuit board to the LP Circuit board, this includes ALL the controllers buttons & LED's.
At first, using this controller seemed a little weird.
None of the fret buttons are worn in yet, and the "Tilt" SP activation seem _much_ more sensitive on this LP "doner" circuit board.
Overall though, everything worked perfect the 1st try!
Also, my painting skills suck
That's really the only thing that took the 7+ months.
I would try to paint it one week, screw it up, then not try for 4 more weeks. Oh well, at least it is finally done!
I have used my White Wireless X-Plorer DAILY since making it back in March, and it still works great!
(the LED's stop working sometimes though, there is a loose connection somewhere in that one. Tilt SP is hard to get activation on sometimes too).
Now that #2 is complete, I can give #1 a rest.
Please post any question you might have, and I will try my best to answer them. _________________

Thank you
Yes, the wiring is much much cleaner this time around.
I took way longer / took my time / was way more careful / used smaller(cleaner) wiring for everything this time too. The smaller wire alone made a big difference.
The other item was the neck wires. Before, I added a bunch of length to the neck wires for the fret buttons. This time, I essentially "hard-wired" the LP circuit board & LP fret board/wires directly to each other, with no extra wires.
Thanks for posting your pics too.
Do you have a thread about your creation? Any more pics?
How did you do the battery case?
Also, I see the button on the pick guard. Is that your SP/back button? (do you ever use tilt? does it work?)
What XP buttons did you wire in support for?
Directional pad? Guide button? Start/Select? And LED's?
What about the whammy? Did you just use the entire LP whammy assembly / wires like I did? (same questions for the headset jack) _________________
