Streaks

I've noticed that even when 100% a song, more often than not, my streak will be 100s of hits less than the number of hits actually possible in the song. Is it just the freestyle sections that I'm not getting? Or is there something mechanics wise that I'm missing to get that combo up? I've noticed it with rewinds, without, and with the rewind deck, yet can't for the life of me actually get those numbers up. In one instance, I even 99%ed the song I had previously 100%ed, yet my streak was longer.
