Hello GREAT people of Scorehero, I come seeking your infinite wisdom. I've been wondering, do wireless connections contribute to latency(or lag w/e) in online games? I have my PS3 using wireless, the router is on the floor below it but the signal strength is about 90% most of the time.

I kinda have good internet, but not. I have DSL, but the maximum range you can get DSL from the DSL Box is 18,000 feet, and I am at 17,400 feet . I know that contributes some, and I know there is about 65ms overhead from Qwest's devices.

Did I mention DSL?

Overall I guess I am wondering if I should try to hardwire it or not. I want to but I will have to find a new place for my ps3 .

I PROSTRATE MYSELF BEFORE YOU.

A cable is going to be a little more reliable, but as far as faster is concerned, it's not likely to be a significant difference. I run my computer and xbox on wireless and it's very rare that I get a lag spike and I never have latency issues that are caused by using wireless. Every once in a while my computer will dc from the router but I'm pretty sure that's because I'm still running win2k and not due to wireless technology being unreliable.

Nothing like some lag. My connection is 92% and I get massive lag spikes in 1 in every 8 games.

That's probably due to some form of interference. Does your router automatically switch channels to use the best one? I'd try to pay attention to what's going on in your house when you get lag spikes, you'd be surprised what can cause interference (I knew a guy that would dc any time his family used the microwave >_> )

That's because microwaves are the most common source of interference. Try it sometime if a microwave is within the path the wireless signal needs to travel.

Also, cordless phones. That's why I would get disconnected from Nintendo Wi-Fi when people would call our house (sounds like dial-up, doesn't it?) until I changed the channel.

Interference could be the cause of your lag spikes, so make sure to check that out first.

Hmmm... I do not know.

That's mine.

Both laptops are off and the phones are not being used when I get them.
