Ouch. I believe the dad was justified to take the XBox away; hell, my parents took all my fun things away when my grades started slipping. But instead of running away, I instead focused the energy I had spent on XBox and other stuff and put it all into finding a way to get all my shit done. 4 months later, I became the undisputed master of the aesthetics of procrastination, allowing me to rock out AND be successful in school.

In short, the kid's issues ran deeper than the videogames. Maybe had his parents intervened sooner they could've stopped this from happening though the same thing may have happened regardless. What an unfortunate story, though.

Ignorant kid, but my condolences to the family.

My grades go down, I get stuff taken away, I don't BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW and join gaming "clans", I STRIVE to get good grades to get stuff back! Everybody wins!

I'm a Plastar pro and maintain straight 'A's.

yea, living in canada (and Bradford being really close to Barrie, which is where the kid is from), this kind of freaks me out quite a bit that there is a muderer in my area. running away over an argument over a game....yeah, not the greatest thing. but once i heard on the news that they found his body, i couldnt help but feel bad for this family. since they probably are blaming themselves over what happened, i send my deepest condolences for his family and friends.

The parents definitely feel like shit...but they didn't do anything wrong.

The kid was an idiot... kids are getting out of control with video games these days. I think kids are getting more stupid as the years go by.

Didn't do anything wrong? Are you serious? Sure they didn't do anything that will likely be prosecutable by law, but the way they handled the situation directly led to the events that happened. It is a parent's responsibility to ensure the safety of their child, by letting him (encouraging him even) to get on that bike and run away, they failed at protecting him.

The father even said so himself, he figured his son would go somewhere to blow off some steam and be back by evening. He didn't realize how angry and prideful his son was. The father should have followed his son to continue making sure he stayed safe, by not doing so, he more or less told the kid that he didn't care about him.

The situation should have been handled better by all parties and it is a shame that it had to end this way. Hopefully their pain and suffering can serve as a lesson to all other parents out there.

And KoT, like it or not, you can consider any form of media (including video games) to be an addictive substance and kids are far more susceptible to addiction than adults are.

at 15 - this was the time, I got internet (um, 14 years ago)
I got hooked on Firefly.com ---> most of you people should know, this
WAS myspace.com before it existed. Microsoft bought the website for thier
PASSPORT login system and the "community" website layout.
Truely a groundbreaking website. (sorry for that sidebar)

ANyhow, after that history lesson - I got addicted. Rather than choose this avenue, my dad (and mom) agreed it was better for me to get a job, and "do something" with my free time, and not completely pull firefly from me.
Cut down on the time online, yes, a simple "removal" of it, no questions, and that's that...no

I know this kid and me is probably apples to oranges, but I guess I feel this way.

Sucks.
But, i DO agree with KoT (on probably many things related here) - kids are really spoiled friggin' rotten these days, and just don't take to good old parenting anymore.
On the other hand, parents are too busy, (don't blame them - have to work like crazy to pay for all the shit we "need" today) - but just feels in general that parents don't do enough WITH their kids, or reward/punish the same way. Sure they may take them to soccer practice, and knock out other parents at hockey games, but that seems to be it.

This sucks for the parents, especially the dad - to know that the last thing his kid was thinking of him was "fuck you dad!" - and the dad was thinking "fucking video games and son not doing anything productive.

Unfortunate. But hey, I bet if every parent in the world had to deal with this situation w/their teenaged son - I truely think 40% would have acted the same way as the dad did.

I don't see how anyone could side with the parents... Yes, my condolences for their loss... but it's a result of their negligence to realize how their child would act under these circumstances(kind of like ImaCarrot said)... I think I read someone comparing games to drugs... what happens when you take drugs away from someone, they either get really pissed, or really depressed... Instead of throwing a temper tantrum in his room, he went out and tried to make a point the only way he knew how, seems like a smart kid to me, but the problem was, his parents just didn't care enough... These stories always end up the same... There was a story a couple years back, about a girl who's mom wouldn't let her watch Big Brother(reality show) for some reason, like not doing chores or something... and the girl went up to her room and hung herself... This kid could have had some kind of mental problems, I know I'm a bordering Sociopath :-).... You just can't treat all kids the same...

If I ever decide to adopt a kid, I am a firm believer that kids should almost never be punished. I was emotionally and physically abused all of my life by my father, and it was to the point I would do things this kid was doing... I would literally run away for like 12 hours... I didn't have any friends back then(nor do I now)... so I ended up like going into the woods or going behind the house and sit there for hours and hours... And you know what it made me realize how much my dad didn't care about me... If I had a kid and there was some kind of commotion and he "ran away" I would be looking for him non-stop and would not stop till I found him...

Point being, this kid didn't deserve to die, and had his parents actually cared about their child "running away" this would have never happened...

That said, it's hard to lose a family member no matter the situation... maybe it's just my definition of care, but if I was his dad, this kid would still be alive...

The media is really obsessed over this kid.

Pretty sad, but sad that this is the most noted case of dead children in the last 2 months.

"The media is really obsessed over this kid."

I'd imagine that subset of the media that strongly dislikes video games is going to exploit this story for a long, long time. I know Jack Thompson, if he still was able to practice law, would be all over this.

I'd remove that comment now, before you get in trouble.

Most kids are slaves to Video Games nowadays, it's quite horrific. He was probably one of the hundreds of kids you encounter on CoD4 who's rank 55 and does nothing but talk shit the whole game. I hate those kids, but I don't blame them, or the parents. Yes, it's the parents fault for letting the situation get out of hand, but it's the kids fault for letting these things get the best of him all the time. A little restraint from both sides is what is needed to drag people away.
