Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone else on scorehero is into jazz like me. I started really listening to jazz back in 7th grade when I was in the school's jazz band. I played tenor in 7th and 8th grade and alto in 9th. I'm planning on staying with alto. Anyways, a few months ago I went to the famous "New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival." It was probably the most fun I've had in a very long time. So many legendary players (and the food wasn't bad either .) So, does anybody else love jazz and what kinds of jazz in particular? Also you can recommend songs if you would like. _________________

I have been in my middle school Jazz Band the last three years, also on alto. I like to play Jazz, (although I am terrible at improvising due to being left-brained) but I only like to listen to a select few Jazz songs. My favorite jazz song is probably Blue Rondo À la Turk by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. _________________

Funny that you said that because we played that song this year. It was my favorite song that we played. I'm not that great at improvising either but I have been working on it every day and taking private lessons so hopefully I can improve. Another song I like by the Dave Brubeck Quartet is Take Five (I believe the alto player wrote it.) Oh and I also like Giant Steps by John Coltrane.
This is a really cool video of it.

I have been in my Middle School Jazz Band for 2 years. I play the drums. My favorite song we have played is Milestones by Miles Davis. It is such a fun, fast song for the drums.. although it is repetitive, like most songs are. I really like improvising for short 6 bar big drum fills, it is so much fun to see what you sond like on the recording too. _________________

I play drums in my high school Jazz band
tons of fun. We played a New Orleans inspired peice this year and that was loads of fun. I really liked the sound of a famous Be Bop tune called Oleo. Loved the guitar solos in it. Count Basie is awesome, by the way.
I know its not Jazz, but its often played in school Jazz bands- Latin Music. The Girl From Ipanema Is fucking bad ass. _________________

I've been getting into jazz. I have a jazz guitar teacher and I'm going to be one of the two guitarrists in jazz band next year at school. I own Joe Pass - Virtuoso and Wes Montgomery - Smoking at the Half Note but my favorite music is still Buckethead. _________________

I appreciate Jazz for the influence it had on old school technical death Metal. I would listen to it if I wasn't pre-occupied by other genres. Jazz is solid though. _________________

I love Micheal Brecker's rendition of "Oleo"
Also, yes Latin music is quite awesome. None comes to mind but I have played my share of Latin pieces. My saxophone teacher actually has Latin gigs every weekend so that's pretty cool I guess _________________

I admire jazz drummers like Terry Bozzio and Simon Phillips. I don't like straightforward jazz though; I'm more of a fusion sort of guy. _________________

I know it's so cliche, but Kind of Blue by Miles Davis is simply one of the best albums ever. It got me into jazz, and it is just perfect in every way. It sounds higher quality than most stuff you hear today. I love other stuff by him, like Nefertiti. The title track of that album is awesome, where the rhythm section improvises under the repetitive horn section. So good!
I also love me some John Coltrane. That guy just controlled his instrument like Jimi Hendrix in my opinion. A Love Supreme is my second favourite jazz album. _________________

Harmonix games are just too good not to play them for 8 years. Officially back in action. |

Yes!
Charlie Parker is my idol. Invented one of the greatest things of all time (Bebop) and plays alto.
Another song I like by him is Celerity (Celebrity)
He just blows it away I've never heard anything like it. The drum solo in the middle is also very impressive. _________________

I've been trying to learn jazz piano and guitar by myself, one thing's for sure, the only way to truely play jazz is to hear a lot of jazz as well.. _________________

I was REALLY big into Jazz when I was in Jr. High. That was when I had my god ass fucker private teacher, who was a jazz drummer. He taught me everything I knew about music, but man, he was an asshole. XD
I was quite the trumpet player when I was in Jr. High, and I had a shot to me the New York All-State Jazz Band, but.....I hate playing the trumpet now. :P My teacher making me play it 9 hours a day, everyday during my 7th and 8th grade summers really just took the fun out of playing, and made it more like annoying work to me.
My favorite jazz trumpet player was Clifford Brown. He was killed in a car crash at a very young age. I think he was in his mid-20s, but he was already one of the fastest and best out there. I couldn't imagine how great he could have been if he had not died in that crash. |
