Anyone else like this series? I loved NFSMW when I was younger, I believe I was on the 9th member of the blacklist, and decided about a week ago that I'm getting it again. I played a bit at my friends house last night, and I think I'm picking it up at Gamestop today. So, who plays, what's your favorite game, and why? _________________

I've got:
NFS:Underground - awesome
NFS:Underground 2 - bit too "more of the same", although the SUV races were funny
NFS:Most Wanted - one of my top ten games of all time
NFS:Carbon - rubbish
NFS:ProStreet - so rubbish it makes Carbon look good.
Also played the original NFS many, many years ago. My Dad's got a lot of the intermediate ones (Hot Pursuit, Porsche Challenge et al).
Everything in Most Wanted just clicked. It had the perfect balance of racing and chasing (compare Carbon, where the chases felt very boringly tacked on), the pimping of your car actually had relevance (to your heat level; NFS:U2's super huge bass systems were just there for the sake of it) and Rockport itself was pretty memorable and well laid out. Palmont City in Carbon was just bland (and too small). The only thing missing from Most Wanted that was great in the previous ones (and Carbon, for that matter) was drifting.
Also, [shallow] Josie Maran was hot. [/shallow] _________________

Haha, I just got MW, and it's so enjoyable. I can't remember Carbon too well, although I don't remember it being as bad as everyone says. Still, Most Wanted is just so much fun. Right now I'm 15 on the Blacklist and working my way up to racing Taz. I stole Sonny's car, which by the way sucks...I couldn't win a normal sprint without cracking and buying some N20. _________________

YES!! Oh my god this brings back so many memories. I remember having an orgasm beating Razor the day MW came out. _________________

Ah, now I tried playing Hot Pursuit 2 and couldn't get into it.
I had Underground 1 which I loved, but never finished. I got towards the end and got fed up with losing.
I rented MW for a week and it was by far one of my favorite racing/driving games of all time. Yeah, everything clicked, the music was good, the pursuits were fun, just driving in general was fun, it was really good. Then the newer ones hit and they're just utter crap really.
I did play the ones for the PSP though, they're alright. But yeah, the new ones are just. Well..They suck. _________________

My favourite NFS is either: Hot Pursuit 2, or Most Wanted.
I remember at the end of Most Wanted, the massive chase in the BMW with the black Corvette cop cars chasing. Well, I don't know how I did it, but I beat it my first try.
There's also that new one coming out, called Shift, I don't really like the look of this one.
It's pretty much a racing simulator now. If I wanted to play Gran Turismo, I would play Gran Turismo. _________________

Hot Pursuit is the greatest game ever made. No doubt. I can't tell you how many hours I put into this game. I've replayed it many times, and it never gets old. I love this game.
Then Underground came out. O_O This game is amazing. The customization of cars was possibly the coolest thing ever. The racing element was awesome, too, but it didn't match Hot Pursuit's.
Underground 2 was pretty good, but it didn't match the first one or Hot Pursuit. I think that they went a little over board with the customization, but it was still pretty cool. I wasn't a fan of the "explore" mode. I replay this game every once in a while, but mostly just to pimp out some cars and race a few times.
Everything after Underground 2 was crap, the customization was WAY too over board. But the customization is what sold, so they kept making the customization more and more outrageous.
You can say customization is what made the Need for Speed series and what ruined it.
After Underground 2, I started playing Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition. Awesome game. It didn't match up to Underground 1, but it was still really fun. I loved the customization in this game, the racing is fun, too, and the soundtrack wasn't bad either. _________________

Yes, exactly. I play NFS to play an arcade racer with real cars. I mean, don't get me wrong, I played Pro Street and it was definitely a fun game...but it wasn't NFS. _________________

I don't think the negative reviews of Undercover helped push forward the arcade genre. _________________

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 was probably the greatest game ever made. NFS: Underground was really good, but I liked NFS: Underground 2 better. It's mainly becuase of free roam, and the fact that you get to customize the cars to whatever extent you want. But everything after Underground 2 sucked in my opinion.
Now I want to go play some NFS O_o
BTW, my youtube name is from NFS: Underground 2 just becuase I love that game. _________________

Wow, I definitely tricked out my ride TOO much...I won every pink slip so far, sold all cars(including starter), and bought an Eclipse with two free Transmission upgrades(Blacklist Markers), Brakes upgrade, Turbo, N20 and some visual stuff to get the cops off my back...I just beat Izzy by about 2,000 feet. Ridiculous.
EDIT: Shit, my pattern for getting Pink Slips stopped working. _________________

I have almost every main Need for Speed title there is (except for Undercover), and I have pretty much enjoyed all of them to an extent. Here's my opinion on the NFS titles:
Need for Speed 1 and 2: Great arcade racing games. Don't let the old graphics fool you, these are solid racing titles. Haven't played these two enough to really give a more in-depth review.
Need for Speed III Hot Pursuit: Oh my gosh, I LOVE this game! I remember renting it one time and having a blast trying to outrun the cops and playing with my brother on it. Now, I own it, of course (got the Collector's edition disk), which makes it even better. I really need to go back and try to unlock all the levels and cars. The bad thing is that I only have four PS1 memory cards, and they are full with Final Fantasy stuff. Guess I'll play this one on my PS3, Virtual Memory Cards for the win XD.
NFS High Stakes: Another one I have played a lot and loved. Once again, I loved being chased by the cops in this game, and even though I was lazy enough not to unlock the later levels (I had too much fun on the first few levels) this is a great game.
NFS Porsche Unleashed (PC Version): Don't play it that often.
NFS Hot Pursuit II: Another one of my favorites. Everything about this game was done right, the graphics, the gameplay, and of course, the cops. I remember spending many hours playing this game with my brother, too, although he's better than I am at this game. The PS2 version is by far the best version of this game, as you get the traditional three strikes until you are arrested compared to the Xbox/Gamecube/PC versions where you only have one strike.
NFS Underground: Played it, liked it, but never got around to finishing it. There's just so many races in this game it's just crazy. I still have it if I ever want to try beating it.
NFS Underground 2: Pretty much the same as Underground 1. Liked the game, but I never got around to finishing it, as this is quite possibly the longest NFS title EVER.
NFS Most Wanted: My personal favorite, every now and then I like to go back and get into a random chase and see what crazy stuff happens to me.
NFS Carbon: Good sequel to Most Wanted, enjoyed it.
NFS Pro Street: An interesting experiment with closed-circuit racing. It's not as bad as the critics say, but the fact is that this kind of a racing game has been done a million times already. NFS Shift seems to be expanding on the pure racing part of Need for Speed and I think it is going to be a lot better than Pro Street in that category. _________________

I've got them all and NFS: HP2 is my favorite out of them all. I beat NFSUG2 all the way through, I guess it was somewhat long. I got to about race 75 in NFSUG1 and couldn't win for the 350Z so I stopped playing. I'm sick at drifiting in that game though. Also in NFS Carbon I didn't like the whole card thing, I wanted the Audi R8 for beating the game, not just getting it by a pick of the draw :/ _________________

I've got a Underground 2, Most Wanted, Carbon, and Hot Pursuit 2. MY opinions:
HP2: First one I bought, it's a classic. Everything is right. I'll play every once in a while.
UG2: It's good, but there's too much damn customization. I'd be okay if some of the stuff wasn't completely pointless (Trunk layouts and engine neon were just stupid). I mean, you can even see it while driving around, only during DVD/magazine cover shots. Free roam is also so damn boring. There's nothing exciting in the city. Plus the way you unlock parts (Finding stores) is kinda annoying. But it's still fun to play every once in a while.
Most Wanted: Genius. Pure genius. This game's great, though I don't play it a lot (I bought the original Xbox version as I didn't own a 360 at the time, and it's not backwards compatible). It had good customization, and fun chases and races. Though, I do feel ripped off by the black edition content. Two exclusive cars and one new challenge, plus a worthless DVD. WTF EA?
Carbon: Ugh, I don't know why I bought this. I've got this for the PS2, and it sucks. Police chases were worse than before and tacked on (There's only one you HAVE to do in the entire game) and the bosses were stupidly hard. The cards were dumb, I want to earn everything by beating the story, not by doing some random challenges (They're like achievements, but worse).
And now I don't buy the games anymore. It downhill after Most Wanted. I just stick to Burnout now, the superior series.
Also, anyone excited for World Online? It's free, and apparently it's going to be the biggest game yet. |
