I'm hoping to one day get a DS Lite and a game. Any advice on what game? I was thinking Mario Kart DS...

Mario Kart DS, Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, or Sonic Rush would be great games to get.

Pokemon is my personal favorite, considering it takes a LOT of time to do everything and is very addicting once you start up again

I double recommend everything Graf said and add these:

Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - Some of the most innovative controls ever.
The World Ends With You - Pretty epic battle system, and all around great RPG
New Super Mario Bros - It's mario, c'mon
Professor Layton and the Curious Village - Like puzzles/riddles/etc? Get it.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Pretty awesome game with some hilarious parts.
Elite Beat Agents - Rhythm Game FTW
Dementium: The Ward - Hand's down the best thriller/horror game on the DS

If you're into puzzle games:
Tetris DS (if you can find it)
Planet Puzzle League (you might remember as Tetris Attack or Pokemon Puzzle League)
Picross DS

Pokemon if you like games that you can lose yourself in for hours, Mario 64 if you like the best game ever made, Trauma Centre if you like games that make you want to steamroller the DS until it's wafer-like.

It all really depends on your interests.
If you're into RPGs, then no doubt will Pokemon hold you over for a good long while. I've not even finished it yet and I've spent well over 60 hours on it. Honorable mentions in this category are The World Ends With You and a lot of the Rogue-esque titles... (Izuna, Pokemon Mystery Dungeons, etc.)

For just starting out, I'd recommend:
-Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
-Guitar Hero: On Tour (of course!)
-Mario Kart DS
-Animal Crossing Wild World
-Metroid Prime Hunters
-Tetris DS
-Meteos
-Diddy Kong Racing DS

And get a flash cart if you can...
