I'm the lead singer in a local heavy metal band, and I have played guitar for 13 years now. I'm not great, but the guitarist for our band is one of the best I've ever heard. As far as people who play guitar knocking GH goes, the only reason they insult it is because it encourages average people to play guitar. The guitarists (especially those who hang out in music stores...those guys aren't REAL guitarists, otherwise they'd be with their bands) worry that when people actually start to understand the concepts of guitar, their listeners will realize every mistake they make and be able to recognize talented players and posers out there trying to sneak by with mediocre playing. GH is only doing justice to music, and people that don't like it know that their days of faking it through music are numbered.

Amen...

well i guess you could equate that to the increase in average poker players the last few years. the pros - and really just good players in general - hated that. so i guess i can see that side of it.

actually, pro players and other rounders that play in cash games love to see amatuers if they play a higher stakes game (1000/2000 pot limit Omaha, 2000/4000 no limit holem, etc.). they see those players as dead money and will whip the bejesus out of them and the dead money rookie will just be satisfied with the fact that they just got a helping of their own rectums served to them by a pro player. it's just nowadays where the internet players think that a regular casino is the same as a computer that make get under pros skin because they play so loose and aggressive that it's damn near impossible to put them on a hand. i know my poker game needs a lot of work, but me being under 21, i really can't go to my local brick and mortar casino to play so i just play online where those players are absolute idiots and my extremely tight play is rewarded. but poker is another story for another day.

Yeah this kind of crap gets on my nerves. Those who like it do so, and those who do not, well, don't. There's no point in arguing over something so trivial, lol. I just hate that all the internet has become is a place for people to go and mindlessly bash anything.

Wow, would you look at that?
That's the most replies I've ever had on this forum. (Only made about three topics yet though...)
Excuses for my absence on this topic, been busy the last few days. Concerning the "GH topic" on the guitar site: Still no positive replies...
My guess? Two major factors:

1) People that don't understand videogames will always label them as "childish" or "just games".
2) Real guitar players all have big ego's. Not necessarily anything wrong with that. With great ego's sometimes come great ambitions. Sounds logical, you have to have some kind of ego to want to become a guitar player, right? To perform on stage and impress a lot of people?
But when those ego's get threatened... You'll get agressive reactions.
In a way, they're trying to defend their ego's.

I think people who look down upon this game from any angle have it all wrong. Guitar Hero has given me a great appreciation of "real" guitarists. I think music games teach rhythm, not the ability to play any specific intstrument (or dance, for that matter).

Then again, I could just think that because I'm a drummer.

GH may not really be very much like playing real guitar, but I think we can all agree it's a heck of a lot more like real guitar than Guitar Freaks ever was....

I forgot who brought this up, and forgive me for not looking you up, but that person hit the nail on the head with "GH is visual, guitar is audio"...

That's odd... I'm a musician and attended Berklee College of Music for bass. Friends of mine that are musicians introduced me to the game.

It's just a game, no one says they're a "guitar player" because they just play GH, haha.

The guitar jocks who make these kinds of statements are probably kids who can play all of three power chords and therefore think they're "real" guitarists

Some of those 3-chord wonders make shitloads of money.

Except that the amatuer players are actually competing with the pros, which can't be said for the people who play guitar hero

I occasionaly visit a forum from a guitar site. Today I opened a topic on that forum about Guitar Hero. I was curious if there maybe were some people there that play real guitar who knew of this game (perhaps even play it themselves).
But...all I got until now were negative reactions. The few people that have reacted so far say they think it's ridiculous, "some stupid game" that makes people think they really can play the guitar, while in fact they can't do anything.
What do you guys think about this?

I did the same thing on a guitar forum also and got 4 negative replies. Too baby, looked like DDR on guitar, etc. sucks when you know the song and your fingers want to play the real thing, neck was too tiny.

I play guitar also for over 10 years and I love this game. First time I saw something like that for a game, a guitar controller and you play along and if you don't play, the music stop. Just think of what future games will be like in 4-5 years. Better controller? Better gameplay? I wish I'll be there to see that. ;)
