it seems that Hellashes is the only one that knows what "unknown" actually means...
I'm not going to give any of my bands but come on...
HIM? unknown? that's stupid. |

More people need to know who The Killing Tree are. They were Tim McIlrath's other band when Rise Against were just starting out, and they have much more screaming. Haven't done anything since 2003 though. |

Them. They're ace.
Also, sounds like a good excuse to mention my favourite band in the world ever: Silver Sun. And yeah, they had the name long before these Pickups idiots stole it. There's not a massive choice of stuff on there, but 'Garlic' and 'Pipsqueak' are my favourites if you're looking for something to listen to, but all of those listenable on there are good. Except the one that's not by them, but that'll be obvious if you listen to them all.
Also, along the "not exactly unheard of, but long forgotten" lines: one of the best bands of the 90s, Symposium. I still maintain that 'Fairweather Friend' (stick with it, the ska intro is nothing to do with the rest of the song) is one of the greatest songs of the era, and still one of my favourite songs ever - I seriously challenge anyone to show me something (of a comparable era and style) that's better.
I guess a bit of info on what they're doing now, since they're fairly old bands:
Silver Sun disappeared at the end of the 90s but are still going, sort of, although shows and output are rare thanks to the members living and working all around the country. Most stuff since they re-formed (including the entire third album) is single-handedly recorded by the singer in his home studio.
Symposium split up around 1999-2000 and now have other stuff going on. The drummer and guitarist ended up going for a harder style of music and formed another of my favourite bands, Hell Is For Heroes (who have now, sadly, also split) and recorded one of my top five favourite songs in the world ever. The bassist has a solo career as a singer-songwriter and is very good. The singer started a band that I once saw supporting the aforementioned Hell Is For Heroes. Dunno about the other guitarist. _________________

Electric Tiger Lily and DaVinci's Notebook (Look em up on youtube, their myspace page has got nothin on it, they're an a Capella group, they're really good, but not quite as unknown as I originally thought, still not enough people know about them.) _________________

Well, I am 100% certain that no one will have heard of the band I'm recommending, The Toddlers, because they are a local band and are not represented in the national scene at all. They have 4 album releases though, and I shamelessly uploaded their entire greatest hits CD to my YouTube page because they are awesome and they need to be more widely recognized. Here are some of my favorites:
Clumsy
Lone Star State
Act Your Age
The Good Sleep
Here Comes Adam _________________

Atomship rules. Their drummer is sick as hell. "Pencil Fight" continues to be one of my favorite songs after what, five years since it's come out? _________________

moe. - Rebubula
Go listen to this. moe. is a jam band, and their music is centered on melodic guitar playing and vocal harmony. I started listening to their music this summer, and they gradually became my new favorite band. I've never heard anyone mention moe. in this forum, so I think it's safe to say they're pretty unknown. Seriously, listen to their music. It's amazing. _________________

Tsjuder and Gorgoroth are the best well known Black Metal bands....
and Drudkh isnt really "unknown." I mean, they've been around for like, 7 years or so. _________________

The Beatles
Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin
Michael Jackson
Metallica
In all seriousness some of the answers in this thread made me lol. Morbid Angel? HIM? Seriously HIM? Anybody who has a skateboard that is sold in stores based off of them is not unknown.
Just go look in the Metal thread for awesome unknown bands. Bands talked about in there are only popular in the underground scene. I mean a great band like Phlebotomized only has 62 fans in their fan club on Facebook or a band like Aspid who only has 867 listeners on Last.fm (well 1067 if you count their name in Russian Аспид) _________________

Premiata Forneria Marconi - Incredible progressive rock from Italy. Very nice stuff if you're into that kind of music.
Nektar - Krautrock/German progressive rock. I recommend their album A Tab in the Ocean, easily one of the better progressive rock albums out there.
Spastic Ink - Maybe not so much unknown as they are low-profile but they don't get mentioned as much as they really deserve. Get both of their albums starting with Ink Complete, you won't be disappointed. Excellent progressive metal/rock. _________________

LifeForce.
Don't know them? I don't think they exist anymore...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_LsGSsgwJc
This is a cover by them. Not much else to find on the web... some guy from Last.fm had songs from them and rapidshare'd them :P Their original songs are actually awesome, quite the same style as that cover, but way darker, moodier.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDMLkX0wO9c
That guy uses one of their original songs - "Breed" - as music here. It's actually one of the happier songs.
(The last.fm page lists two bands called LifeForce, I mean band #1) |
