I really don't know why these haven't been mentioned yet:

Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal (original artist: Michael Jackson)

Disturbed - Shout 2000 (original artist: Tears for Fears)

Gary Jules - Mad World (original artist: Tears for Fears)

Didn't even know the original Shout and the original Mad World were both from the same artists lol. I don't like the original versions that much so I didn't care ^^

Paint it Black-Helloween(Original: Rolling Stones)

Wish(Live)-Linkin Park(Original:Nine Inch Nails)

That's Pain covering The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby". Industrial metal.

Such a good cover, they also covered Here is the News by ELO, which is apparently really good too, never heard the original but I like Pain's version

DEP covering Black Sabbath's "Paranoid". This is just such a bad-ass cover, not much to say really.

Band on the Run by Foo Fighters (originally by Paul McCartney and Wings)

Metallica medley of Are You Gonna Go My Way, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Seven Nation Army and Beat It.

Beatles Medley by Tommy Emmanuel:

The last minute or so is ridiculous.

Dah! 6 pages and no mention of Renegades of Funk, by Soul Sonic Force (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCwDIq4evTM), covered by Rage Against The Machine.

Led Zeppelin's cover of "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" comes to mind.

I also really dig this Shins cover of the Postal Service's "We Will Become Silhouettes". They completely reinvent the song.

Also any of Cobain's covers off of Unplugged in New York, most especially this David Bowie cover, "Man Who Sold the World".

I always liked that Britney Spears song Toxic. Best thing she's ever done or ever will do, great song, etc. But this is a better version.

I dont really know if you would count King Crimson as heavy metal but Voivods cover of "21 Century Schiziod Man". Just about one of the best covers ever.

GAH. You beat me to this . I went through the entire thread to make sure nobody had mentioned A Static Lullaby's cover and I get beat by two posts. Damn. By far my favorite cross-genre cover. Never really realized how awesome of a song Toxic was until listening to this cover, so job well done by them.

The Beat It cover mentioned a few pages back could've potentially been the Fall Out Boy cover. Not my favorite cover, but it still is pretty cool.

Another band I don't think was mentioned was Beatallica. Like the name would suggest, it's an interesting fusion of Beatles and Metallica. The band has such hits as Blackened in USSR, All You Need is Blood, and Garage Dayz Nite. As you can tell after a while, it basically fuses the two songs in the titles, so it's not exactly a cover...still interesting to listen to, though.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this already but The Four Horseman do awesome metal covers of Justin Timberlake songs and other pop artists that are usually better than the original songs.
