I really like this genre, and I want to hear more of it. But I don't really know any artists and I don't know where to start. I'd like some recommendations of good bands/artists in that genre. Preferably instrumentals.

Thanks

IMO you won't get better fusion than Pat Metheny, John Mclaughlin/mahavishnu orchestra, Brad Mehldau, and Miles Davis (especially Bitches Brew era).

I also happen to like a lot of the King Crimson improvisations.

Oh. and also Herbie Hancock is amazing.

Start with Weather Report and Billy Cobham for jazz/prog, and Buena Vista Social Club for latin/jazz.

Seriously, she is my idol. I listen to that album twice every day. Listen to this. Thanks.

Chick Corea Elektric Band. From there, you can delve into Frank Gambale, but I wouldn't be lying if I said it was more guitar oriented. If you like that check out Guthrie Govan and Greg Howe too. They're more shreddy, but some of their stuff is definitely good fusion.

Guthrie Govan was actually the main reason I got more in to Jazz/Fusion type music. Fives (Alchemists version) is currently my favourite instrumental. But I like Guthrie despite the shredding, not because of it.

I've been checking out the artists you all have recommended and I really like what I'm hearing so far. Thanks alot guys

I'm a big fan of 70s era jazz fusion. I started with Bitches Brew by Miles Davis; I tell you now: not a good place to start. That's one to come back to later. However, I was not dissuaded enough that I didn't explore some of the work of the performers on that record.

These two are good places to start:
Herbie Hancock: pioneered a funk fusion sound. The album Head Hunters is absolutely seminal - every track is pretty much a standard now.

Weather Report: just about single handedly brought the genre into the mainstream; classic albums such as Heavy Weather are quite pop-influenced and very easy to listen to casually.

There are of course many more important artists to appreciate; Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever etc. Like what you hear? Buy a CD!

Al Di Meola
Brand X
Dixie Dregs
Iceburg
Jeff Beck
Joe Pass
John Scofield
Larry Coryell
Love, Devotion, Surrender
