Since apparently we can't stay on topic and I get abuse when I try to steer it back to my original intention, this topic is now about metal.

I'd really love to hear more avant-garde music, I've hardly dipped a toe into it. I've heard most of the biggies: Can (krautrock), Robert Wyatt, Van Der Graaf Generator (prog), Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band (experimental/blues rock), Eric Dolphy (avant-garde jazz), The Residents (experimental), Frank Zappa (duh), The Velvet Underground, Glenn Branca, and Jeff Wayne among several others.

I've heard a mild amount of noise rock, and I'm still up for recommendations. Ranging from Black Eyes to The Jesus Lizard to the Butthole Surfers.

I've heard quite a bit of avant-garde metal, and I mean it is REALLY out their. A few of you are probably already aware of: Lykathea Aflame, !T.O.O.H.!, Gorguts, Pan.Thy.Monium, and Phlebotomized.

Anyways, for recommendations I'd primarily like more noise rock and experimental blues/psychedelic music (ranging from Captain Beefheart to The Velvet Underground). Although I probably should ask Afterstasis for this if I want to get anywhere

...not really a fan of Merzbow though...

I'm quickly becoming a huge fan of Noise Rock, I'll give you the recommendations afterstasis and Gowie gave me:

Big Black - Songs About Fucking
Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow
Marnie Stern - This is It...
Mclusky - Mclusky Do Dallas
Orthrelm - Ov
Rapeman - Two Nuns and a Pack Mule
Scratch Acid - The Greatest Gift
Shellac - Excellent Italian Greyhound

Oh yeah, other Shellac fans. Shellac is the only Noise Rock band I really listen to, but that's because they own. Get their album 1000 Hurts. Great album.

Also for Avante Garde Metal, Gorguts, Phlebotomized and Mithras come to mind.

If this counts, Nine Inch Nails is a great band. I recommend The Downward Spiral, one of the best albums of the 90s. Although, you can never go wrong with The Slip, Pretty Hate Machine, or With Teeth.

What... no.

Seriously, I think everyone has got completely the wrong idea about this topic. I'm not talking about metal with bits of oddness. Mclusky are one of my favourite bands but they're not what I'm talking about either. Shellac are also awesome but still pushing it a bit. I can't even begin to imagine where you thought Nine Inch Nails would fit in.

Someone mentioned Lightning Bolt. That's a good start. We'll go with that as an example of the sort of thing I intended with this topic.

Here's a couple of record labels to check out for starters:

...and a couple of playlists:

Well, Wikipedia tells me that Diablo Swing Orchestra is avant-garde, but it also says that they are metal which I don't get. Regardless, since thecaptainof seems to believe he is an expert on the subject, I shall link to a couple of my favorites from their first album, as I haven't listened to the second one yet.

Pink Noise Waltz
Balrog Boogie
Poetic Pitbull Revolutions
Infralove

Oh for fuck's sake, I never said I was an expert in the subject, I just said that most of the stuff people are talking about is not what I intended.

Rather than just abandoning it to the same metal-based fate as damn near every other topic on Scorehero, I thought I'd explain what the original intention was to see if we could get it back around that way. I won't fucking bother next time.

Also, no, Wikipedia doesn't tell you Diablo Swing Orchestra are avant-garde. It tells you they're avant-garde metal. There's a huge difference. But... I give up. Talk about whatever you like, I'll rename the topic.

Aw come on I had high hopes for this topic.

Is this a serious post?

Anyways thanks for the noise rock recommendations, I've heard Lightning Bolt and Big Black, but the rest are new.

Why is avant-garde metal not avant-garde? Avant-garde is just a prefix genre. (I mean real avant-garde metal, not just some prog metal band because wikipedia says) I understand your desire to keep it on the down low in this topic, however.

Not sure what your intention was with the original topic, but I'm very familiar with many of the artists that dabears was just going on about.

I'll contribute that my highest musical aspirations have involved playing in or starting a metal fusion jazz band for some years now. Not as in "jazz metal," but as in jazz fusion.

You know I was just thinking that this forum needed another thread about metal. Good call.

If you didn't want discussion about Avante Garde Metal then just say "No metal"
Simple as that.
