Quote: | I want our fans to know that with Jimmy in our hearts, our journey to record has officially began. Jimmy helped leave this world an amazing gift and now it’s our job to make sure to deliver that gift to our fans. We asked Jimmy’s all time favorite drummer Mike Portnoy to record on behalf of him. Mike said it would be an honor and without question that’s what Jim would have wanted. Its comforting to us that someone like Mike, who is undoubtedly revered as one of the best drummers in the world, held such respect and adoration for the Rev’s abilities. Even though it will never be the same without our brother by our side, his essence lives in our hearts and through the music he helped create. He was a legend before any of the success or any of that bullshit and we are fucking excited to lay this down for our fans, and especially for Jimmy.
-Avenged Sevenfold |
Before I said that there is no drummer that I believe that could replace The Rev's drumming expertise (I know hes not replacing The Rev, just recording the album), and I still stand by my statement. But this is about as fucking close as possible that could drum in The Rev's shoes. This is the absolute BEST choice they could have gone for. And knowing Scorehero's stance on Dream Theater, I'm sure this decision will be controversial (possibly?), but I'm pretty ecstatic right now.
What are your thoughts on this decision? _________________

I am absolutely STOKED that this is happening, my favorite band recording with my favorite drummer, finally some good news for avenged sevenfold. There is obviously no way mike portnoy is going to replace the rev due to dream theater, but this is certainly the best thing that a7x could have done.
I'm kind of curious (if they decide to try to find a replacement), as to if they'll try to find a big name to replace him (if there is any), or if they'll just hold auditions. _________________

As sad as it was the the Rev died... Mike Portnoy is by far my favorite drummer and i am more than excited to see how this turns out. I really did like Avenged Sevenfold so this will be incredibly interesting. Is he recording new material or just rerecording what they did for their upcoming album? _________________

This is without question the greatest bit of music news I've heard in years. My favourite band and my favourite living drummer collaborating? I can't wait to listen to this. _________________

I haven't checked out Avenged Sevenfold yet, but this may be the album that gets me into them (of course, I'm sure Portnoy will have a big influence on the bands sound). |

No fucking way! When the Rev died (on my birthday, no less ) I was pretty upset. I love Avenged Sevenfold, and to go out like that... But damn, if there was anybody in the world right for the job of making some songs with A7X, it's Mike Portnoy. I'm looking forward to this album. _________________

I really don't care for Portnoy and I don't think he'll fit in anywhere but DT. But I'm excited to hear the album, and I really hope he proves me wrong. |

We can only hope...
C'mon A7X, you haven't given me anything good to listen to since a few standout tracks from City of Evil. I've almost lost all faith... _________________

Well, Mike Portnoy can play different styles. He did a great job playing Ringo style as the drummer for Yellow Matter Custard (Beatles cover band). _________________

I just hope they have a replacement for an album (I will definately listen to it.) Other than that if they get a new Drummer I hope they just start it as a new band. _________________
