so i am now officially the guitarist and graphic designer for my tattoo parlor (iripride tattooing in new windsor new york)
so our next tattoo parties will be for st. patricks day on march 17th and march 18th. my goal is to have 50 songs i'm comfortable playing live for that show. Exiting this weekend i had 34 songs, I learned three today (Them Bones by Alice in Chains, Twist and Shout by The Beatles and The Trooper by Iron Maiden). So I'm coming up with songs that aren't too cliche but still good to play live. Any good suggestions? Here are the 13 songs I think I'm going to learn for that deadline.
Down With The Sickness - Disturbed
Girls Girls Girls - Motley Crue
Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard
For Whom The Bell Tolls - Metallica
The Kids Aren't Alright - The Offspring
Wait And Bleed - Slipknot
Rock And Roll Band - Boston
The Downfall Of Us All - A Day To Remember
The Warrior's Code - Dropkick Murphys
Bring Me To Life - Evanescence
Hard To See - Five Finger Death Punch
Nothing But A Good Time - Poison
Fat Lip - Sum 41
What do u guys think? Any suggestions?
Here are the songs i can play (and will play live)
Them Bones - Alice In Chains
Falling Down - Atreyu
Blow - Atreyu
Unholy Confessions - Avenged Sevenfold
Bat Country - Avenged Sevenfold
Beast and the Harlot - Avenged Sevenfold
Critical Acclaim - Avenged Sevenfold
Twist And Shout - The Beatles
Paranoid (my own version) - Black Sabbath
Your Betrayal - Bullet For My Valentine
Fever - Bullet For My Valentine

So I've been thinking about getting serious about my guitar now.
I've been playing since I like 12 or 13 or something. I'm 19 now, and to be frank, I'm pretty shit.
I wanted to be able to play the songs I could sing, which I can now (Green Day, Arctic Monkeys, Kooks, basically un-challenging stuff) which is all well and good.
Apart from now I listen to different music to what I used too... you know, music with solo's, shredding, and awesome stuff (Bullet, Avenge Sevenfold, stuff like that).
So, better guitarists than me, how should I learn to get faster at shredding/any techniques I can learn/things I should know so I can just rock out and make a decent sounding solo...
And more specifically; advice on how to do tremolo picking on single string.
Thanks to anyone who helps _________________

Can someone please tell me what a reltar is, and how one would go about playing this mythical instrument? Cos, I think everyone here has made a mistake and started talking about guitars. _________________

we've all accepted the fact that the OP doesn't pay attention to this thread anymore and have ignored his/her ignorance. _________________

As the person above me already said, scales and practice are the key. However, that's not the only advice that I have for you.
First, you MUST learn how to hold the pick right. That's the only way you'll be able to do tremolo picking on one string.
Second, except practicing scales forth and back, you should play patterns like this from time to time:
#1
e--8p5---5--------------------------------------
B-------8---8p5-8p5----5----------------------------
G----------------------7----7p5-7p5----5------------
D--------------------------------------7----7p5-7p5---5---------------
A------------------------------------------------------7---7p5-7p5-----------
E---------------------------------------------------------------------8-----
#2
e------------------------------------------------
B-2h3p2h3p2h3-3h5p3h5p3h5-5h6p5h6p5h6-6h8p6h8p6h8-8h10p8h10p8h10-10h11p10h11p10h11-11h13p13h13p11h13-------
G------------------------------------------------
D------------------------------------------------
A------------------------------------------------
E------------------------------------------------
These two patterns should do it for the beginning. They sound really good, are fun to play, and most importantly, will boost your soloing skills. Play it slow, but right. Don't try to play fast, or you'll learn it wrong. It'll take months to re-learn it right.
Third, and last, but not least, triplets (That's how I call them, don't know if these have a name). Major and minor triplets are the most important thing you can learn in order to play solos. So what are "triplets"? Play a tone. Any tone. For example, a G tone on the B string (8th fret). Then, play the first lower fret (in this case, 7th fret) on the string under it (In this case, the high e string), and the second higher fret from the one you first played (In this case, the 10th one), you will get a "G major triplet":
e----------------7-10-------
B-------------8-----------
The minor triplets are very similar. Just, instead of playing the next lower fret, you play 2 frets lower. For example:
e-----------------8-12-------
B-------------10----------- (A minor)
It also sounds great if you modify the triplet, and play the last tone one fret higher or lower, for example like this:
e------8-13----------------------
B--10--------------------------
or
e------8-11----------------------
B--10--------------------------
All great guitarists use these. I'll give you just a few examples of solos played like this.
e-17p13----------18p13----------15p12----------16p13-------------------
B--------15-(x8)--------15-(x8)--------13-(x8)--------15-(x8)-----------------
G------------------------------------------------------
D------------------------------------------------------
A------------------------------------------------------
E------------------------------------------------------
This is the beginning of the outro solo in Mr. Crowley (by Ozzy Osbourne). First, Randy plays a D minor triplet, than a modified D minor triplet, then C major, and another modified D minor. Sounds great, right?
e------------------------------------------------------
B------------------------------------------------------
G----5h9-(x5)---4h7-(x5)---2h5 (x5)---------------------------------------
D--7-----------5-----------3----------------5h9 (x5)------3h7 (x5)----2h5 (x5)
A------------------------------------------7--------------5-------------3--------
E------------------------------------------------------
Gangland (by Iron Maiden) pre-solo. A-minor, G-major, F-major, E-minor, D-minor, C-major. Sounds great .
Talking about triplets, you can play all the tones on one string. For example, instead of playing
e----------------7-10-------
B-------------8-----------
you play
e---3-7-10----------------------------
It sounds the same, but it's played on one string only when you tap it. Here's another nice example:
e-19p15p12-(x8)-20p15p12-(x8)-----------------------------
B-19p15p12-(x8)-20p15p12-(x8)-17p13p10-(x8)-18p13p10-(x8)--------
G-----------------------------------------------------------
D-----------------------------------------------------------
A-----------------------------------------------------------
E-----------------------------------------------------------
So this is the bastard we like to call Fast Solo A, or FSA, in the song One (by Metallica).
Just one more thing about triplets: They don't work between the G and B strings. I'll leave it to you to figure out why.
I'm sorry this post turned out this long. Hope it helps, and hope it's not complicated, especially the part about "Triplets" (Again, I named these myself, I know what real triplets are...). And finally, remember:
Start out slowly. No-one was born as a master, not even Jimi Hendrix.
Hope I helped
Hope this post wasn't noobish... _________________

I've honestly been able to learn how to play quickly by just learning songs. The more songs you learn the more patterns you'll get used to and the more fun you'll have than just sitting there learning scales. It's good to look up the key and know what scales the guitarist who wrote the songs were playing in and that will help you further your education as a guitarist.
This was just my 2 cents, everyone has their own style of learning to play. _________________

Some good advice, but I just want to point out that the first "modified" d minor is Bb major. And I'm pretty sure that the last set of triplets should be
Code: |
e--17p13----|
B--------13-|
G-----------|
|
for F Major. I've never played it so I can't say for sure. What you wrote would be d diminished though. _________________

why is it ironic that i'm wearing a megadeth shirt? lol i honestly did it as a secret shout out to my girlfriend, we met at my tattoo parlor while she was getting tattoo'd and i spent the day there learning how to play the trooper and two other songs, then the first time we hung out i bought that shirt :P.
i was bored last night so i decided to record and put up one more video.
