I've been noticing this Djent being thrown around in a lot of metal magazines, especially UK ones. Anyone else know a bit more about this genre?

Bands I'm assuming would be labeled Djent -

Tesseract - Their album was awesome. Reminded me a lot of Deftones.
Perhiphery - Haven't listened to their album yet.
Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve is Godlike, and Obzen is awesome.
Born of Osiris - Only heard one song so far but it was deathcore with solos.
SikTH - Loved these guys for ages but didnt know their name until recently, but they're like.. Dillinger/Fall of Troy lovechild with two vocalists. (Split now )

Please correct me if I'm wrong, or if you know anymore that'd be good.

Apparently I like some of this sort of stuff without ever realising what it's called. I saw TesseracT at a little festival a couple of years back, didn't realise they'd made it big. I never got to see SikTh before they split but they've been a feature around here since I first heard Pussyfoot on a free CD that came with Rock Sound magazine however many years ago.

Most djent songs are awful chuggy wankfests, although there are few decent ones that like. In general I'd give it two big thumbs down though.

I swear Djent is the home of some of the best band names of all time. Chimp Spanner? Failure of Milk? Periphery? Hell yes.

Born of Osiris is not really djent, it's "sumercore" (I really shouldn't be using that word anyway).

The Contortionist is a good band that fuses deathcore and djent (it's actually pretty nice). Returning We Hear the Larks, Cloudkicker, Tre Watson, and Assimilated Mind Phase all come to mind. Plus everything else that has been mentioned already (I.e., the bigger bands; TesseracT, Periphery, Animals As Leaders and Vildhjarta)

i think After the Burial incorporates some Djenty sound to their songs, for example "Your Troubles Will Cease and Fortune Will Smile Upon You" sounds like something Meshuggah or Periphery would make.

Listen to anything by Animals as Leaders, most of TesseracT's music, El Scar's God's in His Heaven, All's Right With the World, or most of Periphery's work and try saying that. Seems a very narrow-minded viewpoint on a genre that includes brilliant artists such as Tosin Abasi.

There are chugs, there is wank [sic]. Isn't the only thing you got going for you in that argument that AaL is not "awful"? And that is wholly subjective.

I have to say, someone's going to have to turn me to some good djent bands, as Animals as Leaders has really gone downhill lately. TesseracT is still good, and Meshuggah will forever be the ridiculous gods that they are.

But I have to say, I actually agree with Pope here. Practically every single Djent band my friends have tried to turn me onto hasn't interested me purely because it doesn't sound like some original band, it sounds like a garage band trying to cover Meshuggah (very poorly most of the time).

Here's the bandcamp. Both God's in His Heaven, All's Right With the World and MAGI are free.

Sure it's chuggy djent, but what is djent without chugs? It's part of the djenre and asking for something different is really odd.

There's also Returning We Hear The Larks for those who are interested.

Plus, both albums make direct reference to the critically acclaimed Neon Genesis Evangelion series! Isn't that neat!

As for djent as a whole, the genre took a little while to grow on me. While it may just sound like a whole lot of guitar wanking with complex drums, there's a lot there to be appreciated. You also have to take into consideration the fact that djent is also generally accompanied by other genres. A perfect example of this would be Animals as Leaders, who would fall under djent and progressive metal.

<inv4der> greg
<inv4der> djent is a prog metal subgenre
<inv4der> so ALL djent is also prog metal

Even so, my point still stands. Djent isn't just some bland genre. There is a lot that's there to be appreciated from it.
