Hi, I'm just starting out making these, and I thought I'd come in with a bang

I'm going to do Dream Theater - The Glass Prison.
I've posted this on the Freetar forums already, but I'm the only person on there at the moment...

So I've opened up Freetar editor. I changed the controller options to suit my keyboard. I opened a new song, and selected TGP from My Music folder. This is an MP3 file. It plays in the Editor, but will it play on GH2?
And if I then save the note chart, does it overwrite the song?


Also, then how do I like...y'know, put a note on the chart?
None of this stuff is really in any of the FAQs.

Edit: Also, would say, Guitar Pro or Finale work for creating a midi?

If you want help with how to use the Freetar editor, it might be an idea to use the Freetar forums, and not here.

Doubt you'll find much help here, as we all make our custom songs for GH2.

So you did.

But you're still more likely to get help there. I don't think anyone here actually uses the Freetar editor, a few people take Freetar songs and convert them, and the others use midi sequencers.

Edit: Actually i think Galiath might use Freetar.

I'm making mine for GH2 O.o

Wait, you mean Freetar doesn't work with GH2?

If you can't get a custom song from Freetar to GH2 using this and Sottle's "Idiot's" guide, then I'm afraid it's going to be quite the uphill battle for you.

Have you not read the posts in the forum?
There's this one for converting the audio to VGS, or you can use this.
And this one for creating a custom note chart.

And as people have already pointed out, Freetar questions don't really belong here.

I have read the posts, and still, nobodies answering my question. I'm not asking HOW to convert the MP3, I'm asking IF I need to.

And I'm not asking how to use Anvil Studio either.

And as I've already pointed out, I KNOW this isn't the ideal place, but it's certainly much more active than the Freetar forums, and I'm much more likely to get a reply sooner, as I have.

Yes, you need. GH2 reads VGS files, not MP3.

...why would there by guides for creating VGS files out of standard audio files if you could just use standard audio files?

And have you tried the freetar site for help files or stickies in the forums? I can't imagine they just release the program with no instructions.

I tried Freetar for like a minute and ditched it.

If you have any experience with Guitar Pro, or happen to have TabIt, then you should try those out for a while (I recommend TabIt because I find it more user friendly than GP).

Make a new file in Guitar Pro with one guitar track and change the tunings from the standard tuning to: C8, Db8, D8, Eb8, E8, G8 (in numbers it would be 96, 97, 98, 99, 100, 103. It'll look like this in GP:

D--------
Eb-------
E--------
G--------

97------
98------
99------
100-----
103-----


C - E or 96- 100 are your 5 GH buttons. Note that these are the buttons on Expert difficulty. If you read the MIDI FAQ, you might have learned that there are different notes for different difficulties. Specifically, an octave differents. To go to medium, you can just drop each note an octave, but most members write their note charts in one difficulty, and that's expert. It's also best to just use this for practice.

Back on track. C(96) is your BLUE button and E(100) is your ORANGE, so you can make out what the rest are. The G(103) is your star power.

So, you start tabbing the song as you would like to see it in GH. If you're having trouble understanding what it should look like, it's very similar to a note chart that GHEx produces.

Hmmm...I should write a Guitar Pro/TabIt tutorial on making note charts.
