I used Breaking Wheel to help me learn alternate strumming. I failed a lot, but I'm perfect at it. |

I passed Cowboys from Hell on [snip] expert [snip] without double strumming... | Acourse my score was crap (still is) but I have time to improve, lol... The strange thing is, NOK-x was kicking my ass for the longest time (only 3* for over a month), then I tried downstrumming the whole "swing" part in the middle. Nailed the sumbitch and 5*'d it first try.
Yep, I'm weird alright. _________________

I just passed CFH on expert this Thursday. All it took was practice for the finger placement on the buttons and a lot of really fast down strumming. My score was horrifying and my hand hurt like hell afterwards, but I beat it without double strumming a single passage.
Now BATM is the song that's gonna make have to learn how to double strum. I wouldn't have made it through the song if I hadn't. |

I must be a monster down-strummer, because I passed CFH and BatM pretty easily. Once I started alternating I got much better scores, though. _________________

Yeah, I've 5 starred it on Hard and Expert downstrumming. It's just easier for a lot of people to alternate strum it. Easier to hit the really fast parts and much less tiring to boot. Even though I don't alternate strum too often, I would encourage learning how to do it. _________________

How do you guys hold the strum bar for alternate strumming? Thumb on top and pointer on bottom was the most comfortable I could get, and it didn't feel too great. |
It helps if you pinch the strum bar a little bit. Just use your fingertips instead of your entire finger and it's much more comfortable. _________________

Believe it or not, on the G-GR part I close my eyes and do it solely on the rhythm. If I look, I usually screw up.
Speaking of CBfH and BaTM on expert, I finally passed CBfH (barely) and got 98% through BaTM and failed. Ninety effing eight percent! |

That same thing works for me, strangely enough.. I was playing at my friends house, and I was trying to explain to him how I always screwed up the note-chord switches. So I looked over at him and started talking when that part came up and I was just playing subconsciensly...and when I looked back I had a 3x combo. It was pretty amazing. haha. |

It may be useful only for hard where the sustains aren't the same tempo as the note - chord switches, but I couldn't even get the sustains on expert. But the G-GR? Nailed all of them almost every time. This may not make much sense and I don't have any reason why it would work...but when the G-GR part came, I focused my eyes on the top of the scroller where all of the notes are coming down and I got the timing perfect.
Maybe somebody else should try this? Might just help me out or something. This song was harder for me to pass than Crossroads, Godzilla, Texas Flood, and Frankenstein until I tried this out. A little odd huh? Either way, looks like Cowboys From Hell will make me finally learn double strumming just to pass it... |
Actually the trick to the part I THINK you're talking about is to start on an upstroke instead of a downstroke so all of your downstrokes hit on the downbeat. Do it this way and you'll hit more notes pretty much 100% of the time.
Also, I was pretty damn good at DDR and to be good at that you HAD to watch ahead of the line where the notes actually connect. It's a simple concept, you just have to trust yourself to know when the note is going to hit when it's falling. |
