My favorite type of jazz is big band jazz. I of course love the old stuff, Duke, Basie, Benny Carter, etc. But I also enjoy the modern stuff with Gordon Goodwin. |
AHHH! GORDON GOODWIN!
His band is just phenomenal.
I love jazz, particularly modern big bands.
I've been in my middle school jazz band, and currently in my high school jazz band. I'm also lead/2nd trumpet in the All-City Halifax Senior Jazz Ensemble and 2nd trumpet in the Provincial-Wide Nova Scotia Honour Jazz Senior Big Band.
Some of my favorite bands and artists are:
Herbie Hancock, Gordon Goodwin, TOWER OF POWER, Buddy Rich, Benny Goodman, Miles Davis, Maynard Ferguson, Don Menza, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver, Bobby Shew. |

Oh yeah, and to HellAshes, I have heard a little bit of Clifford Brown stuff. I played The Blues Walk in an honors jazz band and played a vibraphone solo in it which was pretty cool considering I never had improvised before. |

Could someone recommend a good song to me? I'm always hearing about how great Jazz is, and I'm very interested in it from a music theory point of view, but I've tried listening to some and it just... Bored the hell out of me. No other way to put it. So I'm figuring maybe I listened to something crappy. Someone wanna recommend something?
Also, I've been hearing the term "School Band" more and more and it always strikes me as weird. Do you mean a few dudes from the same school in a band |: ? _________________

I'll be honest, straight jazz bores me too. My school's jazz band has a listening requirement, and alot of the concerts I have to go too are really boring. Try listening to some offshoot genres such as fusion or some old school big band. If all else fails, just listen to Buddy Rich. I honestly think Buddy Rich should have his genre of music |

School band is like a class at school. It has a director instead of a teacher. _________________

I've played the song before. It's a nice ballad. Too bad I hate improving over ballads. >_> |

I don't know if they teach you much because at least, jazz band is supposed to be for experienced musicans and there's a bunch of different instruments. _________________

Tower of Power is great too. I have the pleasure of playing What is Hip? in one of my jazz bands. Also, one of the private lesson teachers at my school played in TOP _________________

I'm a big jazz fan. Ever since 8th grade or so it has been my life...playing in bands at school and listening. I've played bari and alto sax in school bands and have loved it every year. And jazz is pretty much all I listen to.
I listen mainly to Cannonball Adderley, Vincent Herring, Gary Smulyan, Kenny Garrett and Sonny Stitt. Those guys are my idols. _________________
