Ok, so Im going to be a senior next school year in the fall, and I was thinking of buying a class ring. What would be a good way to convince my parents into letting me spend that kind of money. I was wondering, what could be some good reasons that might convince them?
I believe they are a good sign of status, but thats just me. Any answers would be greatly appreciated. _________________

Frankly, I didn't buy one because I think college is more important and would create a greater sense of loyalty than a high school. _________________

I consider class rings from highschool as a waste of money. But you would know better than anyone else what kind of things to say to your parents to convince them into giving you money for it. Afterall, we don't know your parents, and you do. _________________

This.
But then again, class rings cost 75 bucks (at least they did at my school) and I could think of roughly 235234421534 better uses of $75 (and a parental favor, which is hard to come by if your parents are like mine in the sense that they make you pay for everything because they put themselves $20K+ in debt and then say it was your fault that they're in that much debt in the first place) than a class ring which you will wear approximately 4.2 times. _________________

It all depends on how much you liked high school and how much you want to remember those memories. College isn't going to mean anything more to me than somewhere to get an education for a better job. Don't let anyone tell you that a HS class ring is a waste of money. The worth of the ring is what you put on it.
I went through a lot of stuff in HS and I designed my class ring to reflect the struggles that I went through. I wouldn't trade my ring for a thing. _________________

Me too.
When you get to college high school will become a thing of the past VERY quick. All of my friends got class rings, and letterman jackets their senior year. And now all my friends letterman jackets and class rings are away collecting dust.
But again, it is all personal preference. If you want one, get one. |

You might not think of a class ring as a big deal now, but trust me, when your older, you'll be glad you bought it. Trust me. |

you will buy it, then it will collect dust until 20 years in the future when you randomly find it in the back of your closet and show it to you kid. _________________

This is sad. You should really try to make the most out of college and have a good time because there is a lot of potential for it.
In my opinion jewlery and nice clothes etc. are all way over rated in any circumstance. But then again, I'm not one for symbolism at all. If you're into this kind of thing, try to get the ring, figure out why you really want it and honestly communicate that to your parents. But honestly I believe that money is better spent on a few beers with your buddies in college. _________________

As others have said upthread, rather a lot of this is going to come down to your personal preferences.
Me, I did not even remotely consider getting a high school class ring. I attended a perfectly middle-of-the-road public high school, so it's not like a ring signifying that I'd graduated from there was going to impress anybody or anything. And I'd been accepted by Big Expensive Difficult-To-Get-Into University, where I'd be attending in the fall, which I considered ten times the personal accomplishment, really. A ring denoting the comparatively meager high school achievement... well, that just didn't seem the least bit necessary. (Not helping matters: locally, I'm pretty sure that the only guys who got a lot of mileage out of their high school class rings and letterman jackets are the guys who didn't go to college or move out of the area, who've been reliving their high school "glory days" for the last twelve years....)
I did get a college class ring, for what that's worth. Though even that falls into the bucket of "something I've worn maybe twice, to complement my suit at sufficiently fancy-pants job interviews". The rest of the time, it just sits in its little box next to my diploma in my den. It's cool and all, but for folks who don't much care for symbolic items, it's definitely not your cup of tea. _________________

I don't have one because I think college is going to be much more significant, but if you really want one places like Jostens should have blocked payments available, so you don't have to pay a lump sum all at once, or even get an expensive ring, they make them for like $100 which aren't bad (least expensive model) _________________

1) I'm too young for beers.
2) I rarely drink.
3) I have entirely too many responsibilities to "make the most out of college and have a good time" if that involves partying and drinking and crap like that.
Sorry, buddy. You and I will just have to agree to disagree on what college is and what it means to us. _________________

College is absolutely first and foremost about educating yourself so that you put yourself in the best possible position to make the most out of your life. All im advocating is that you not take a morose standpoint on it and avoid having a good time, because there are plenty of opportunities to do so that will not negatively affect your education.
I'm a college grad with a degree in math, have been in grad school for 4 years now and have had a good time in both while learning tons of mathematics along the way. If you refuse to take full advantage of your situation i think you are hurting yourself in the end. _________________
