Well, technically it's Robotron: 2084. I've heard much talk about that game but never actually got round to playing it, so I just spent a quick half hour whizzaround on MAME checking it out.
Let's just say it's pretty clear where Smash TV came from. It's a sequel in every sense bar the actual (TV Tropes Wiki would call it a Spiritual Successor). Robotron: 2084 is appealingly mental (the furthest I got in the half hour was Wave 7, where you start getting those little boxes that spawn tanks; just about broke into six figures on the scoreboard); I do find it slightly easier than Smash TV, though, largely because all the enemies are onscreen from the start in each wave so it's easier to see when you're clearing stuff down.
Good fun, though.
Smash TV came from the same bloke as Robotron: 2084 (Eugene Jarvis), so it's natural there'd be similarities. The TVs are 2600", just for the record (a blatant reference to the old Atari console).
Robotron: 2084 never officially saw release on the computer system of my youth (the Sinclair ZX Spectrum), but I know Jeff Minter made a variation of it under the name (inevitably, for such an ungulate-obsessed lunatic) of Llamatron. I should probably have a look at it. _________________

Probably Cod 5 on veteran, GH3 on hard, and RSV on realistic, for me _________________

Absolutely not. Call of Duty 5 isn't even the hardest game on Veteran, in my books, and no Call of Duty game would rank in my top 20 hardest games. I've beaten 4, 5, and 6 on Veteran, along with Mile High Club, so I think I have some say. Halo 3 is harder than any Call of Duty game I've ever played, though I've beaten it on Legendary, too. For proof, if you want it, check of my gamertag: KyleSHG.
I can't believe no one has mentioned Bart's Nightmare. That game really was one of the hardest of all time. Harder than any modern shooter by far. _________________

Virtual Bart is harder than Bart's Nightmare. I dare you to play Virtual Bart and even try to disagree. |

That's the mushi we keep on bringing into the conversation.
I agree, Robotron 2084 is VERY hard as well. I have gotten to wave 10 or so.
If you want insanely hard, give Sinistar a try. The developers intended the average gamer to last 2 minutes before the game ended.
I've done some pretty spectacular things in my gaming adventures, and by far my greatest accomplishment, is actually beating stage 2 of Sinistar. I only did it once. Stage 3, its just death.
I dare anyone to go get mame, go get sinistar, and get past stage 2. _________________

I realize this is about 6 months old, but holy fuck, F-Zero GX is insanity. Beating story mode on very hard = nutsack. _________________

Aye. I've tried and I got half way... I can't even imagine how frustratingly brutal the last third is... _________________

I've just spent half an hour on it.
Williams clearly love this sort of gaming. Wikipedia calls it a "twitch game", and it's bang on the money - yes, this game is ridiculously hard, but I can't help but feel that's only because of the horrendous control system which meant I spent more time flying around crystals than actually managing to pick the buggers up, which meant that the Workers owned me which... yeah. If I can tone down the analog settings in MAME I might be able to get somewhere with this. _________________

You get used to it... I fully recommending using a controller, the keyboard makes it completely useless to play.
Also, with that, the original joystick was a 41 directional digital/psuedo analog stick. So, it is a lot harder to control than the arcade itself, but its definitely not any easier in terms of difficulty. _________________

I bought myself a Sidewinder joystick many moons ago precisely for playing MAME stuff (and a Saitek P880 joypad, and a Quikshot ProWheel, and...). The 41-way stick manifests in MAME (at least in version 0.89) as an analog 8-way, which makes it extremely twitchy in response to lateral movements (which is why i need to try and wind down the sensitivity a tad).
Just for curiosity's sake, I got about 20,000 points the first time I played it - that's still my PB. _________________
