You can pretty much ignore all the rules about what you can and can't eat as long as you're extremely careful.
For instance, if you want to eat gummy candy don't chew it. etc etc
But don't ever ever EVER chew gum with braces. It does not work well. |

Just tried eating KFC. I ordered a #1 (Large breast, 2 sides) and a snacker and it took me 1 and 1/2 hours to finish. _________________

to add to the gum thing
its not really that bad if its sugarless gum
but it can still get stuck and when it does its pretty gay
but when i had braces and chewed sugarless gum it rarely got stuck in my braces |

An hour and a half? wow lol. I ate whatever I wanted whenever I wanted, if a bracket came off, I got it fixed (only happened twice in 3-4 years though). Whatever you do, make sure you wear your retainer when you get them off no matter how annoying it is. I stopped wearing mine a couple months after and my teeth are growing crooked again. _________________

I removed my braces like.. 8 years ago? Had them for 3 years :S I don't remember ever being told to not eat this and that, but I don't chew gum anyway. Just eat the stuff you used to eat, it's no big deal. Oh and hooking the rig up to a battery and light bulb is fun for a couple seconds but really hurts >_> |

You're also gonna hate it when it's time to get your braces tightened. Your orthodontist inserts a slightly smaller wire, and it hurts to eat any hard food for a while. |

Bleh, to hell with the rules they give you at the dentist about braces.
I had them for 4 years a while back and did absolutely NOTHING different. Chewed gum, ate mouthfuls of chips, never broke anything or had any problems.
And all the scare tactics about telling you if you dont follow the rules you will have permanent marks on your teeth when they take them off...........all bull shit or it would have happened to me. _________________

If you want to just eat whatever the fuck you want. Thats what I did.
It just takes like an extra 6 months before you get them off. But I broke most my brackets doing things other than eating anyways, so it really just depends on how careful you are all the time, rather than just what food you eat. _________________

You can eat anything once you get the hang of it. I'd stay away from gummy stuff though; not that it might break your equipment, but it's a bitch to clean out.
If tonight is your first night with them, take some ibuprofen and eat lots of mashed potatoes. Whenever you get them adjusted, you'll be on soup and no-chew foods for 36 hours. _________________

Okay. When you are NEW new to braces, your teeth become incredibly sensitive as they adjust to the initial changes brought about by the braces. During this time it's best to stick to liquids and soft foods, like soup, oatmeal, yogurt, ice cream, et cetera. For soup, the basic Campbell's soup cans (add water) work better than the full-sized "Chunky" soup cans, stuff like that, and Progresso, because they have less solids, but if you feel like chewing, go for it. This will also happen for a few days each time your braces get tightened (though with me it had a sort of "diminishing returns" effect).
Aside from that, there aren't really any dietary restrictions to braces that aren't unreasonable. Naturally, don't eat gum, but not because it'll cause a wire to pop, it just gets stuck in the brackets and takes FOREVER to clean. Stuff like crackers and chips will get stuck in there too, so make sure to keep your mouth clean, otherwise you shouldn't have any problems eating them.
One thing I would advise you stay away from is biting into a whole apple or anything like that. I love eating apples... A few different kinds of fruits actually, bananas, grapes, papayas, cantaloupe, watermelon, orange... GOD I love oranges... But I'm getting off track here... Anyway, I was able to bite into a whole apple, but it hurt like HELL when the sides of the apple pushed my brackets away. I had to start slicing apples up whenever I wanted one.
Oh, and I had mine on and off in 18 months. The bastard took 'em off early though, so my bottom two front teeth are oh-so-slightly crooked (one pushes the other forward). What an ass. Thousands of dollars, all the pain and the discomfort of wearing my loose change inside my mouth and the damn things didn't even fix my teeth, not to mention my jaw has popped ever since I had them taken out! Braces...
Edit: TOTALLY ninja'd by the guy before me. _________________

Something I never got about braces is why they tell you not to eat nuts... will they potentially crack a bracket? |

If you put too much bite force into what you're eating, you could stress the wires or cause the adhesive that keeps the brackets attached to your teeth to pop loose. This tends to happen with harder foods than it does with softer foods, as you need to apply more force when you chew. It's never a good idea to chew on something excessively hard, but you can eat tougher foods with braces. _________________
