I've already committed myself to never drink. It's just stupid. And yes, I'm only 14 and I know things change along the way, but I can already tell you that I will not succumb. All you get is a huge headache and vomit over yourself from overdoing it, and even if you don't I know beer and stuff tastes gross. |

everyone does it at least once. i mean cmon, youll be in high school. you only get sick if youre dumb about it.

I find it interesting how many straightedge people there are in this thread. I come from a school where pretty much everyone (including me) is at least a social drinker, and it's actually kind of refreshing. Major props to you straightedge guys! _________________

I've had a beer in my life. The stuff's decent, though not all that great. _________________

FACT: The above statement is true, telling your friend that the british are coming and he gets all freaked out takes his shirt off and starts running around outside playing a trumpet yelling the british are coming

I am 18 years old.
I am in my 21-year-old friend's basement, on his computer, sitting next to 2 mini-fridges full to the brim with "Mantown Beer." (Mantown Beer is for anybody that is part of his basement buddies, his basement being named "Mantown." I am a member of "Mantown," thus fully allowed to drink said beer)
I am dying of thirst. I am not going to drink any beer.
I wish I had some soda, though. He left me all alone here to go to work.
Not saying I'm straight-edge. I enjoy illegal substances and am a computer pirate (avast).
But alcohol doesn't do it for me. I've never gotten drunk, and never will. _________________

So you're just assuming that because I'm only in middle school and I'm going to high school next year, that I'm automatically destined to drink? No. |

I thought the same thing about weed. It's all a matter of how convincing the people trying to convince you are, really. I had a few very close and very convincing friends who I felt comfortable with ask me to try weed. I said no, it's bad for you, blah blah blah, and they basically told me everything about it, gave me the option, and I accepted.
Alcohol is NOT overstated on TV or in health class. It really does do those terrible things to you. That's why I never did it (and probably won't).
Honestly, alcohol is far more dangerous than marijuana. But this is digressing, and I don't want to start what could get this thread locked. If you would like to discuss this particular aspect further, PM me.
If you have something to say that adds to the topic, though, then by all means go for it :P I just don't want to see this thread locked, because it will let us know who's the most mature of us all. _________________

I swear, I'm going to prove a lot of people wrong on this.
Okay, end of this little quote war before the thread gets locked. |

Alcohol doesnt do terrible things to you. It just lets you fool yourself into thinking you can do all the crap that's on your mind, and it's your own damn fault if you start acting like a douche. Responsiility for one's own actions, most important thing I ever learned in my entire life. People need to stop blaming everyone else for everything. It's YOUR fault if you let yourself drink those 5 shots too much, and the results of it is YOUR responsibility. If you don't want to drink that's fine, but don't judge people who do, unless they're being dicks about it. |

It's funny because as long as I can remember my dad, teachers, and other people have told me that peer pressure gets to you and that even your closest friends will get you to try stuff you'd never think of doing. Of course I never believed them because I hung around with a good group of kids, kids I'd never think would do anything like that. I thought that once you started you'd keep doing it more and more often. In short, I thought it was a really big deal and that I'd never do it.
About six months ago at age 17 (I'm sure some people would never believe my first drink was at 17 ) it was just me and a couple friends at one of their houses and they had some beers in the fridge as always. They always tried to get me to try some, but I just never really wanted to (it worked out for them because they always had a designated driver ). Finally, one day I caved and tried one. Tasted like shit. Really bad. Your first taste you're going to wonder why anyone drinks it (I still don't know why people do unless their only goal is to get drunk). I continued to drink that one beer hating every sip of it but I just wanted to get through it. After, I was surprised when I realized I didn't feel any different, other than the bad taste in my mouth. I tried some other stuff, some type of wine and harder stuff mixed with soda, but it still tasted like shit. I'll stick with soda.
I told myself I would never drink (at least until I was 21). I have my parents to thank for that because niether of them ever drink. My friends always told me it was no big deal, but I never really believed them because I thought they just thought it was fun to get drunk at parties, but they were actually sort of right. I tried it and nothing happened. I know that it really nothing at all and I probably won't do it again any time soon. You don't want to drink? That's a good thing, and don't let other pressure you into it. I did it just to see what the big deal about it was and it's really nothing at all. It is, afterall, illegal and if you get caught (which, in all honestly, you won't as long as you're not in the middle of a huge party that gets busted), it will be something you'll regret. But you'll know what to do when the opportunity comes. _________________

I will admit that I have driven drunk (legally speaking) a lot of times. From years and years of drinking experience, I have a very intimate familiarity with the vagaries and quality of my own reactions and thinking, compared with what is necessary to function normally on the road, and I am well aware of how drunk I can be and still drive. I don't expect any of you to believe this, no one ever does, but driving is still possible under some influence. There MUST be a total commitment to safety above all else, though, when you are doing this.
When you are drunk, you must focus on nothing else but the details of driving: driving straight, what is in front of your car, how fast you are going, etc. You will have tendencies to get sloppy on turning, and to brake late, and to have your attention wander, and you must make a conscious and serious effort to counteract all of these tendencies. You have to learn how to dispel the alcoholic effects with your own willpower, and override yourself so that you can reliably handle a car, and up until a certain point of consumption it can be done. Once your vision starts swimming, or you start to see double, you can no longer dispel your drunkenness and at this point driving is no longer an option, even if you take these precautions.
I guess this isn't encouraging or condoning drunk driving, more like a true picture of the practical truth of the matter. I've had to drive myself home from hundreds of bars and sometimes you need to have your car there at the house the next day, cab fare to the bar and back would run you almost $60, you were at the bar for 4 hours and you had 6 beers, dinner, and 2 cups of coffee at the end of the night. It's 2:15 in the morning, I-5 is practically deserted, as are most of the other roads that lead back to your house. You do the math, run cold water over your face, take a deep breath, and willpower yourself home. Gradually, you become experienced at this process, and you begin to learn how to drink and drive.
This is just the flip side of the whole drunk-driving thing, this sort of thing happens all the time on Friday nights all over. My friend lives about a 20 second walk from a bar, I'd rather drink there and pass out at his place than drive, but guess what? Sometimes that doesn't happen and you end up driving, end of story. |
Buzz Drinking is drunk driving and you can still go to jail...
Drinking is stupid I really don't see why people do it, just to impress other people... I just turned 18 and it's saddening to hear about all of these parties where everybody is drinking and crap, it's all because of peer pressure and the urge to be the in crowd. _________________

Lol... anyways... drinking with your close friends while playing video games has got to be one of the most fun things you can do on earth. Trust me. You're missing out if you don't try it at least once in your life. _________________
