Alright, so I've been playing guitar for about 8-9 months now. I'm okayish at it. One day my guitar was being used in class (I take informal guitar classes. not so much lessons as just practice time), so I returned the "favor" and picked up his bass.

Now, at that point I was hooked. 5 minutes playing electric bass and I love it much more than playing guitar.

So, long story short, I have a bunch of free time this summer, and I want to start actually learning to play electric bass.

Keeping in mind that I have a basic handle on fretting from having played guitar (also keeping in mind that when I say basic I mean basic! only 8 months experience), I'd be wondering if anybody has suggestions of good songs or bands for me to start practicing with.

Killing in the Name was my first, but then again, I'd played guitar for 4 years before starting bass.

But I think it's pretty easy for a beginner, and sounds good too.

Start with some of the easier Guitar Hero bass songs to get a better feel for the instrument. I've heard Cliffs of Dover is a rather easy song, don't quote me on that.

Green Day has easy fun songs to play if your starting out on bass

good songs:
80 - Green Day
Longview - Green Day
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Mama Kin - Aerosmith (a little harder than the rest but fun and still pretty easy)

hope this helped.

thanks for the tips, most of it seems like the type of stuff I'd play.
and I may not take "formal" lessons, but I have many friends who've been playing bass for years (and have taken formal lessons) who are happy to teach me.

Smoke on the Water seems easy and sounds cool to boot.

How would you say you can play? Hell, I learned the main riff of YYZ at 6 months and I'm currently starting Symphony X's Domination(11 months now).

The main riff to roundabout is pretty cool, also Cygnus X-1

Try Talk Dirty To Me by Poison or Animal I Have Become by Three Days Grace.

Music is like candy, you throw out the (w)rappers.
People who rap aren't rappers, they're rap-ists, y'know, like art-ists. Which looks suspiciously like the word "rapist".

well, 8 months or so at 5 hours a week. so not an amazingly great amount.

The most complex song I've attempted to play was Someone's in the Wolf by Queens of the Stone Age, and the most complicated song I have learned to play at-tempo is Exo-Politics, by Muse (yay for knowing a song on reeltar before playing it on guitar hero!)

So I'd say nowhere near as good as you, but I've at least got a basic handle on most techniques.

Cochice by Audioslave is awesome, and so is Sweet Child O' mine. They tought me how to handle my right hand when crossing the strings.

Longview by Green Day and Higher Ground by The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
They were a couple of my first songs on bass and I still love to play them.

You shouldn't really start off playing songs, rather get into the instrument! Learn everything about it, the scales, the frets! Technique in general! After a year of that you can play ANYTHING xD

Also, find out which style you like better, slap-hand or regular.

(And don't use a pick, it's just... )

The first song I learned on my bass was "Ace Of Spades" by Motorhead

That song is really easy to learn
