Suicide is legal but the act of assisting in a suicide is not legal.
I can't really be arsed to try wording it myself, so have some lazy copy-pasted words:
Quote: | Suicide (and thus also attempted suicide) was illegal under English Law but ceased to be an offence with the passing of the Suicide Act 1961; the same Act makes it an offence to assist a suicide. While the simple act of suicide is lawful the consequences of committing suicide might turn an individual event into an unlawful act, as in the case of Reeves v Commissioners of Police of the Metropolis [2000] 1 AC 360, where a man in police custody hanged himself and was held equally liable with the police (a cell door defect enabled the hanging) for the loss suffered by his widow |

If they are truly suffering and nothing can be done, at their request it is alright. _________________

I believe assited suicide should be legal, and you should just use your better judgement of whether or not to help them.... |

I don't see what the big issue is on who is delivering the dose. I agree that it should only be an option for the terminally ill with zero percent chance of recovery and not for suicidal/depressed people. They got themselves into whatever trouble and shouldn't be allowed an easy escape from it. For medical reasons, however, a person, if they request it with full cognitive faculty, should be allowed to be euthanized. Does it really matter at this point if it is a doctor or a nurse, or an impersonator? The person gets their wish fulfilled do they not? And at this point in their life, they aren't contributing at all to society and being killed would allow for their wants to be realized and society/the family gets more money to spend. It's a win-win situation. I don't see the gray area here. _________________

I know, it seems like a dumb question to me too, but governments could take peoples' property after they commit suicide. |

There should be something like a 3 month period between when you apply and when you go through with it. You might be able to work some issues out during that time. _________________

Any chance we could change the subject of this thread to say "euthanasia" and not "assisted suicide"? A lot of people seem to be getting the wrong idea here =\ _________________

I liked it better as Suicide... Active euthanasia seems like we're all killing puppies. _________________

as somebody who watched their grandma slowly die from Alzheimers, i would be for euthanasia. in some situations it just seems like the right thing to do _________________

Attempted suicide is what you can be charged with. _________________

.......
i really don't now about the whole euthenasia thing. maybe we should spend more time trying to advance healthcare to cure people with terminal illnesses and such, and learn as a people to be more caring and sympathetic to prevent someone from truly wanting to take their own life, as opposed to spending more time pondering moral issues
but i suppose if someone truly finds nothing but suffering from their life and wants to end it, who is to say they can't?, that in mind is euthenasia necessary at all if you could just find a relatively pain free way to kill yourself if you get turned down from euthenasia or it's illegal?.... weird... _________________

I think if someone has a terminal illness and wants to be put to death and there is a family member that supports it, then they should be able to die in peace. |
