It's already started to happen. See here:

EDIT: Some mod deleted the comment in question.
This is one example. I think this could get out of hand if we don't implement some sort of CAPTCHA or disallow anonymous comments. _________________

Mind clarifying a little? I'm not exactly seeing what you're talking about. I see the main page, and then two comments, one by emptyset, and one by dclapp. _________________

CAPTCHA isn't going to stop anything... these are real people, not machines!
It's really up to the page owners what comments are going to be displayed.
Maybe we could implement a system under which comments are automatically deleted unless flagged to remain. _________________

If you're talking about the content of the page itself, well, knowing the user, thaaaaaat's definitely what the user intended to be displayed there. The first comment is, word-for-word, what it's supposed to be. Not really sure where the alleged 'spam' is coming from, unless something was there and was removed since you posted this. _________________

Until we actaully see comment spam being a problem (sorry, but this page is not an example of a problem), I don't think that the comment system needs revision at all. If a user is spamming the comments, his/her IP address is still listed, so if the mods feel like that person is causing a problem, I'm sure that they'll take action. Also, keep in mind that the page's owner can set the page to either allow or disallow annonymous comments (or any comments for that matter) and has the ability to delete any comments on his/her pages. That's a feature that I've already used several times.
As long as owners take... ownership... it shouldn't be a problem. |

No, no, no, -no-. Some moderator deleted the comment before any of you oculd see it. There was a third comment (spam) about some russian website, and it definitely looked automated. _________________

I didn't get a chance to see the comment that Spike was talking about, but I did just come across some definite spam on Macaron11's page.
Here's a picture to show it just in case it gets deleted
Personally I think it would be a good idea to just not allow comments unless people are logged in. There's no reason a SH member can't log in to post a comment and it will be a little less easy for spammers to do what they want. |

Well each user can control the ACLs of their own userpage meaning if they want to only allow registered users to comment then they can do that but they can also allow anyone to comment _________________

Yeah, it would be very beneficial for people to change their comment ACLs to "+" _________________

And be careful not to set your Write ACL to *, then anyone and everyone can edit your page, not just registered members.
We would prefer it if people left the ACLs how they start out by default, any changes to the page or comments made once the ACLs are changed are solely the page owners responsibility and ScoreHero can't be held responsible for any malicious intent made towards the page owner or visitors of his page. _________________

Bump. The last comment on IWillKickU's wiki page, which is the user page of the week, is definitely spam. It doesn't say who the poster is though. Is there a different place I should be reporting this? _________________

Deleted. As I've told several people, there's not much we can do about this, if page owners set their page ACLs to allow unregistered users to comment on them.
These are just automated spambots that scan the internet for text-boxes that they're allowed to enter text into. So they find things like blogs, wiki comment pages, etc, and submit their spam. Luckily the wiki's comments don't actually parse HTML, so we don't end up with any actual links to spam, or images, or anything else, but it's still a little annoying.
I really do suggest everyone leave their pages' comment (and write) ACLs at "+", not at "*". That makes it so that only registered SH users have access, not random spambots. _________________

Brock, Thanks for the heads-up, although Deimos got to it before I did. I'm leaving my ACLs set so that unregistered users can comment. I check my wiki page multiple times a day, so if I do get spammed, I'll be sure to catch it quickly. If you don't watch your wiki as closely as I watch mine, definately limit ACLs, but I'm ok with deleting some spam from time to time. I have some unregistered user's comments on my page that I'd like to keep though (see BenniWells when he wasn't signed in, MrBrownStain420, Smokeyprogg). Just be sure to monitor your pages if you have open ACLs, and I don't think this will cause problems. I love the fact that ACLs on our own pages are open to us to alter. Please don't remove that feature just to avoid spam! |
