So we all know Dream Theater frickin' rules, and that they are all fantastic at what they do.

Something that people seem to disagree on is the entire band being virtuoso in their respective fields. It seems that everyone agrees that every member is a virtuoso in what they do, except LaBrie.

Some say he is, while others disagree. Some can't stand his voice, others love it. Personally, I can see where those who hate his voice are coming from (I couldn't stand it for about two weeks when I was first getting into them), but I would argue he is (and thus Dream Theater is) a virtuoso.

For reference, virtuoso is described as:

2. a person who excels in musical technique or execution.
3. a person who has a cultivated appreciation of artistic excellence, as a connoisseur or collector of objects of art, antiques, etc.

What do you guys think?

He has a sound, he fits the music, but that doesn't make him virtuoso. He is a more than average singer. If he is virtuoso, then just about every person running through American Idol top 20 is virtuoso :\ He's not a very special singer in any regards.

Who then, would you regard as such?

Personally, I've never met a male that can hit that F# in chest voice...

Placido Domingo is a virtuoso. Aretha Franklin is a virtuoso (virtuosa?).

James LaBrie is not.

Dream Theater are my all-time favourite band, but I wouldn't call LaBrie a virtuoso.

I happen to really like his voice, no matter the style he's singing - but yeah, he's not a virtuoso.

Mike Patton.

I like James' voice though.

No not at all. I think I'd rather hear Geddy Lee

Also I agree with HellAshes calling Mike Patton a virtuoso. He is pretty much the definition of the word vocally.

I do agree with that. Patton can pull off tons of different styles flawlessly.

It may not be the signature "virtuoso" type voice. But Patton is unconscious at what he does

I guess I have to unwillingly agree. I love James LaBrie's voice but someone having a really good or enjoyable voice doesn't necessarily make them a virtuoso.

This. The Dream Theater Fanboy in me wants to argue with you all until death. The side of me that knows anything about music wants to agree. I'll have to go with the unbiased side and say that while LaBrie is (in my opinion) an amazing singer that complements the music well... he isn't a virtuoso.

His name should not even be associated with the word Virtuoso.

He is clearly a God.

Apparently you do not understand the meaning of the word "gay". Unless you meant that it was a happy jovial excuse. Or the excuse likes other excuses of the same sex. Or you're an idiot.

I think he sucks personally, that is why I prefer Symphony X to them. I think that Russel Allen is a much better singer. If you don't believe me just watch this.

He does have a great pitch range, and his voice is pretty clear. However, it's hard to stick out as a singer. I don't know how to consider a singer a virtuoso, except maybe opera singers or classical singers. I'd say he's just really good.

King Diamond a virtuoso?

He may not be, but he is in my opinion at least, >_>. And I wouldn't consider LaBrie a virtuoso, his vocals don't seem to be that impressive, at least when put with the other members of Dream Theater.
