Along with ES and some other guys, I do the same thing as them: strum up on offbeat stuff. So on BaTM I start the yellow note (on hard) or the RY note (on expert) with an upstroke and go from there. If I don't, I mess up.

I never really payed attention to how I did it before I looked at this topic. I guess I'm an oddball out. I always start strumming up on the green notes, and down one the ones inbetween.

Well, it has been a while since I posted this thread, and I've concluded:

I can now mostly downstrum the major portions of BaTM.

The main riff, I only need to get the timing down, everything else on it is entirely downstrummed and 4x multiplier everytime.

The only part I need to alt strum is the GGBGGGRGGGYGGGBGGG-RB.

I can now get the majority of the first solo, and the entire second one with downstrumming on Hard..won't even try it on Expert, yet.

Downstrumming it can be done, people. It just takes time..a little effort, and a lot of pain. =(

sorry, i'm kind of a musical idiot, what do you guys mean by "offbeat" and "downbeat"?

Lately I've been trying to alternate strum BatM, where before I did downstrumming. It's the only way I've been able to consistently hit the GGYRG parts in the first section. I find that I am completely unable to hit the triplets in the song unless i strum "up-down-up". If I strum "down-up-down" I find myself rushing the next up note every time, it's very bothersome.

The downbeat is the quarter notes, the thicker lines, and the offbeat is the eighth notes, the thinnest lines. or, in this case, the offbeat is also sixteenth notes.

I hate the main riff to this song... I can honestly nail every other part in the song on hard even the chords and HOPOs... But not the main riff... Its so annoying

Hm. Interesting. I am almost the exact opposite. I can nail the main thing pretty well, but cannot hit the the GY G GG YB YO chord sequence. Ever.

Does anybody have any suggestions on this?

Refresh my memory. Where is that sequence of chords in this song?

....That might've not been the best explanation ever...

It's when Ozzy first says "Bark at the moon."

EDIT: Sorry. My memory's a little fuzzy I guess. I edited the original post to make it read as to what the chords actually are.

I guess not playing GH for so long is finally starting to get to me.

The first time he says "Bark at the moon" is right after the second set of long holds concluding the first verse. Are you talking about the YO YB YO chords mid-verse?

Oops. I meant the first time it goes to the chorus. Where it goes "dum dum dehdeh deedeee dooooooo". Otherwise known as GY GG YO YB RB.

I can't hit the transition from GG to YO ever. I have never been able to hit that transition for some reason. Maybe it's psychological or somethin, but I have NEVER hit that part.

maybe it's because the transition is GG YB.
i know that was probably a typo, but i'm just making sure.

make sure that you let go of the green as soon as you strum twice, because you still have green held down as you play the YB chord, you'll ruin your combo.

Yeah, I've tried that, and I think I just don't have quick enough of reflexes to do that.

I too learned to strum up and down and I am so glad I did. But there is only one problem. I seem to be locked into alternating up-down-up-down at ALL times regardless of song or patterns. Theres never a d-d-u or u-u-d or any variation. Im wondering if this is what is limiting me from really nailing BATM and CFH on expert.

Hmm.. that's a part of the song I can actually play without messing up most of the time. Use index finger for the GG, then middle-ring for YB, middle-pinky for YO.. the faster notes after those chords screw me up though..
