IRC Trivia: The reason why IRC channels start with # instead of just having a name, is that the original IRC protocal supported "server local" channels, which started with &channelname, and #channelname was a network wide channel. They were (and still are, even by servers that still support them) rarely ever used, but the prefix needed to differentiate them, stuck.

What error are you getting? Also, try
/server Slim.NY.US.GameSurge.net:5960
... or maybe better for you actually ...
/server TuXhost.DE.EU.GameSurge.net:3128

I had to connect to a server with a different port than normal for IRC cause my school tries to block it

. I'm guessing that's probably not your issue, but for anyone else at a university having connection errors, try one of those two commands for connecting to a server.

If you have a firewall running, make sure it's allowing access to mIRC. That's all I can really think of off the top of my head.
