I've donated my hair once. I started growing it out in 7th grade because I wanted to avoid haircuts, but when I heard you could donate hair, I started growing it out. It eventually turned into about 16 inches of dark brown, light brown, and blond tips, I was constantly asked if I highlighted/dyed my hair, which I didn't (my eyebrows also turn freakin' red in the summer, so go figure). After damn near three years, I got my hair cut the Sunday after school ended in 9th grade. The thing looked like a freakin' rat. I kid you not, my parents stowed it in the garage and when my mom went out, she thought my hair was a rat screamed xD. She then realized it wasn't moving and had the same rubber bands as my hair and started laughing beyond all reason. When my mom finally cut her hair in November (she donates too) three ponytails (my mom already had one ponytail beforehand) were sent to Locks of Love. I'm growing my hair out again and plan to shave it the day after I graduate (in a little over 2 years in 2011)

guess i'm a few months late, didn't see this thread back when it was made but i sort of did a similar thing also. i started growing it out in high school, say 2001. i've gotten it cut twice since then. the first time it almost got down to my waste. i believe i got around 20 inches cut off.

just last week i got it cut again, this time only about 13 inches. pics for this time (i just took the after pic myself via double mirror voodoo, which is why it's not that good. couldn't find a pic from before the first time when it was really long):
