Uhhh, this could be a bit of an essay.

Heh, how long have you got? Most of the 'Harmonix bands' from GH1/2 and RB1/2, for a start - specific honourable mentions have to go to my favourites: Made In Mexico, Count Zero, Honest Bob, The Acro-brats.

Then there's other better known stuff that I hadn't heard, mostly because I'd ignored them as 'not my sort of thing': I guess Mr Crowley would be a good example, never heard it before GHWT but it rapidly became a favourite song to play and listen to.

I'll be here all day if I try to go through an exhaustive list, so I'll just say the list of albums below would be a good indication of other stuff.

Quote:
- Are there songs that you knew before Guitar Hero, but have grown to dislike after playing the song in the game? If so, what songs are these?

Several, but it's hard to know whether the game had an influence in my growing to dislike them since I have a habit of getting tired of things regardless of what they're used for. I guess the most obvious thing would be TTFAF - I've never been a big Dragonforce fan, but always enjoyed that song to some degree. The appearance in GH3, or more specifically the massive hype and obsession with it, completely killed it for me.

Ohh, also Take This Life. I'd have to admit that In Flames are generally not my sort of thing but I had the album with that on and thought it was alright, but the torture of playing it GH3 has made sure I've never been able to listen to it since.

Also, Lego RB: please stop making me play that fucking Lostprophets song. I've always liked them, and it's not a bad song by any stretch of the imagination, but for God's sake it's so tedious to play. I'm sure it'd be fine if it was half the length, but four minutes of the same thing is not fun. Same goes for The Passenger. Great song, but I honestly can't think of anything more boring to play.

Quote:
- Have you gone out and bought an album because you heard the song in GH and liked it so much?

I tend to go for the individual songs rather than albums, iTunes has become pretty much my best friend. But yeah, there's certainly been some albums bought because of their appearance in plastic guitar games... and because I'm very bored, I'm going to list them:

The Acro-brats - '...Go Down Swinging!'
At The Gates - 'Slaughter Of The Soul' (usually far from my sort of thing, but Blinded By Fear is an awesome song, so yeah)
Bob Dylan - 'Dylan' (the greatest hits thing, didn't care about him before but I love Tangled Up In Blue)
Disturbed - 'Ten Thousand Fists' (I had their first album years ago, but completely lost interest until Stricken made me go back to them, bought this and a couple of others)
Drist - 'Orchids And Ammunition' (with the two GH songs, got their first album too)
Flyleaf - self-titled album
Freezepop - 'Future Future Future Perfect'
Made In Mexico - 'Zodiac Zoo' (with Farewell Myth)
Made In Mexico - 'Guerillaton' (with the re-recorded Yes We Can)
Megasus - self-titled EP thing (with the self-titled track from RB and re-recorded Red Lottery)
Metallica - '...And Justice For All' (and a few more since, but that's the only one that was a direct result of a GH game)
The New Pornographers - their entire back-catalogue (and I'm honestly shocked that I didn't know them before RB because, as demonstrated by the fact that one of their songs is now my favourite and most played song of all time, they're exactly the sort of thing I go crazy for)
Protest The Hero - 'Kezia' (the new one too, but this is the only one bought as a result of the game)
The Sleeping - 'Questions & Answers'

Quote:
- Would you prefer a GH game composed of entirely songs that you did not know, or a GH game composed entirely of songs that you knew before playing? (In other words, do you enjoy the aspect of experiencing brand new music or music that you already know and love?)

Since I'm mostly a casual player these days, playing as a new way of interacting with the songs I know and love... I'm gonna have to say that. That's not to say I completely eschew songs that I'm not already familiar with - of course I still enjoy being introduced to new things, it's just not my main focus. A game made of 75% songs I know and 25% stuff that's new to me would be a nice balance.

Sorry if that's all horribly disjointed, I didn't have the attention span to finish each section in one go so I hopped back and forth between them.

Thanks for the responses, guys! I didn't really make it clear in the OP, but obviously Rock Band has a huge influence as well, so feel free to talk about that in your answers if you'd like. I was going to repost this on the RB side to get more answers, but I would've felt like a postwhore for making the same two threads with minimal differences.

Are there songs and/or artists that you had never heard before playing their song in Guitar Hero and grew to like and wanted to play more in-game? If so, what songs are these?
I could be typing for a while, but for the sake of brevity, I'll go with ten songs: Prayer of the Refugee, F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X., She Bangs the Drums, Beyond Beautiful, Train Kept A Rollin', Misery Business, Love Removal Machine, Ticks, Sultans of Swing, and All Along the Watchtower. That list is just from Guitar Hero.

I live in a rural area and found it interesting I never heard Ticks on country radio. Ah well.

Are there songs that you knew before Guitar Hero, but have grown to dislike after playing the song in the game? If so, what songs are these?
Before I Forget comes closest, simply because of its expert guitar chart. I disliked it anyway because I left my Slipknot phase long ago, but still, this made me dislike playing the song at least.

Have you gone out and bought an album because you heard the song in GH and liked it so much?
Too many times. It's the only reason I have all three Paramore albums, for example.

Would you prefer a GH game composed of entirely songs that you did not know, or a GH game composed entirely of songs that you knew before playing? (In other words, do you enjoy the aspect of experiencing brand new music or music that you already know and love?)
The above answer alludes to it, but I see these games as yet another means of finding new music. To that end, I wouldn't mind a game with songs I haven't heard before. I would probably know of some of the bands anyway, but I probably would not have gotten around to their music.

Hell, most of my RB DLC (and a fair bit of GH DLC) was bought because I was exploring bands I wanted to hear. If it's not due to that, I tend to pick a challenging song on the instruments I play without regard as to who the artist is.

Yes. I didn't know about Kansas before I played "Carry on Wayward Son" in RB2. I downloaded the DLC pack the second it came out. Boston is also a good example. I heard Peace of Mind first in GH3, and then downloaded the entire DLC pack when I got RB2.

- Are there songs that you knew before Guitar Hero, but have grown to dislike after playing the song in the game? If so, what songs are these?

Actually no, not really. I mean sure Dragonforce has been a little overkill since the DLC pack came out too, but I never really liked them to begin with.

- Have you gone out and bought an album because you heard the song in GH and liked it so much?

Yes. Bostons self-titled album, Kezia by Protest The Hero, Kansas entire discography, Jethro Tull's Aqualung.. Alot of albums.

I wouldn't buy either. A mix of songs that I love and interesting new music is what would interest me personally.

The more specific you could be with these answers, the better. Thanks guys!
1. To be honest, when I first picked up a Guitar Hero game (GH2), I don't think I knew any of the songs on it (except in a vague sense). I wasn't really into music. There were a few artists/songs that I would listen to, but I didn't really care. Guitar Hero and Rock Band have introduced me to many of the bands that I regularly listen to today, such as The Fratellis, The Hives, Muse, and That Handsome Devil. Another major example is Iron Maiden. After hearing some of their tracks in previous games, I was willing to stay up until 5am to download the Iron Maiden DLC pack the second it was released.

2. The only song that I can really recall knowing before it appearing in a Guitar Hero game that I have grown to dislike is Through the Fire and Flames. I don't know if that stems from the song's difficulty being to hard for me to handle, thus frustrating me, or just naturally moving away from that style of music.

3. Yes, I have bought an album based off of hearing a song in Guitar Hero. I purchased both The Dethalbum and A City Dressed in Dynamite having only really heard one song from each. I have acquired several other albums based off of hearing a song in Guitar Hero or Rock Band and wanting to hear more.

4. If I had to choose, I'd probably pick a game of songs that I didn't know. I've had a good history with these games introducing me to music, and I wouldn't mind hearing more interesting new tracks. Though, if the option was available, I'd vastly prefer a mix of songs that I do and songs that I do not know.

Yes. There is. I had heard of slayer before Guitar Hero (kinda hard not to) but never listened to them - GH3 fixed that. Same thing with Buckethead, although I hadn't heard of him before gh2. Sharp dressed man was another of those songs either I hadn't heard or had very rarely heard. I can't really say much else, because when I play the guitar hero games I usually choose songs that I know. Lol. And there's Tenacious D. I hadn't seen the movie nor had an urge to see it until after I played the Metal.

- Are there songs that you knew before Guitar Hero, but have grown to dislike after playing the song in the game? If so, what songs are these?
No. Not that I can think of. If any I would expect it to be Welcome Home (rb1), do to my obsessive playing of it trying to FC it.

Especially those I can play on Guitar, just so I can see the chart and if they're off extremely badly. (Fast Solo A - GH3)

Yes, too many to list, since I didn't know that much music before getting into GH/RB but a few:
The Living End
That Handsome Devil
Rise Against
Queens of the Stone Age
Blue Oyster Cult
Pixies

- Are there songs that you knew before Guitar Hero, but have grown to dislike after playing the song in the game? If so, what songs are these?

Not really; I've gotten sick of a few songs after playing them a lot, but I still like them.

- Have you gone out and bought an album because you heard the song in GH and liked it so much?

Yes, a couple.

- Would you prefer a GH game composed of entirely songs that you did not know, or a GH game composed entirely of songs that you knew before playing? (In other words, do you enjoy the aspect of experiencing brand new music or music that you already know and love?)

I like experiencing brand new music, but I'd rather have a game of songs I know and love than a game that's more of a mixed bag.

Going into this having played GH 1-5, GH80's, RB 1-2 and LRB.

HylianHero wrote:

Quite a few. Boston, Jethro Tull (RB2), Rush, Avenged Sevenfold, The Stone Roses, Primus... Many of the Harmonix bonus tracks apply here too.

HylianHero wrote:
- Are there songs that you knew before Guitar Hero, but have grown to dislike after playing the song in the game? If so, what songs are these?

There are songs I like but don't want to play, because the charts are bad and/or too hard for me, but I still like to listen to the songs. So no.

HylianHero wrote:

Many. Jethro Tull, Rush, Freezepop, Honest Bob, That Handsome Devil, Made in Mexico, The Bags, Anarchy Club, Primus, Avenged Sevenfold, The Stone Roses, Lamb of God. I think that's all.

HylianHero wrote:

Preferably games should have both, but if I had to choose I'd say songs I don't know. I love discovering new music through GH/RB.

Dozens, maybe close to a hundred bands, I'll give the abridged list. Metallica, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Spinal Tap, Living Colour, Paramore,
Helmet, Alien Ant Farm, Dragonforce, Garbage, Alice Cooper, Danzig, Rise Against, The Black Crowes, Eve 6, Authority Zero, Shadows Fall, Steve Vai (not technically a band), The Living End.

- Are there songs that you knew before Guitar Hero, but have grown to dislike after playing the song in the game? If so, what songs are these?

Not really, there are songs I don't enjoy playing in the game, but I still love the song.

- Have you gone out and bought an album because you heard the song in GH and liked it so much?

I had heard several Megadeth songs in RB and bought their newest CD because they sounded awesome.

- Would you prefer a GH game composed of entirely songs that you did not know, or a GH game composed entirely of songs that you knew before playing? (In other words, do you enjoy the aspect of experiencing brand new music or music that you already know and love?)

Honestly, I love playing songs I know in a game so I would go with that over songs I don't know. However, that is not to say that I would not buy a game composed entirely of songs I don't know. (I would)

Smashing Pumpkins, Iron Maiden, Blue Oyster Cult, Fall of Troy, Rise Against, Rush, Judas Priest, Dream Theater, Megadeth, All that Remains, Pantera, Shaimus, Anarchy Club, Freezepop, and Killswitch Engage.

    - Are there songs that you knew before Guitar Hero, but have grown to dislike after playing the song in the game? If so, what songs are these?
Slow Ride and Hit Me With Your Best Shot, I guess.

    - Have you gone out and bought an album because you heard the song in GH and liked it so much?
Only Once (Fall of Troy - Doppelganger)

    - Would you prefer a GH game composed of entirely songs that you did not know, or a GH game composed entirely of songs that you knew before playing? (In other words, do you enjoy the aspect of experiencing brand new music or music that you already know and love?)I'd say a mixture is good. I'd say a ratio for songs I know vs new songs should be 1:2-3. The series is a great way to discover new music, but there should be some well-known songs so tha they can sell well and I'd like some familiar songs in the game as well.

Since this got linked in from the RB side, I'll add some more data for you.

HylianHero wrote:

I've been introduced to a lot of new music via RB/GH. Considering I've only heard of about half of the artists in the game prior to buying the DLC/games, I've found a lot of interesting gems in the RB/GH catalog.

Jonathan Coulton, The Fratellis, Silversun Pickups, Dream Theater, Black Tide, Lacuna Coil, Mute Math. All artists I'd never heard of before playing Rock Band/Guitar Hero, but found that I enjoy quite a lot.

Quote:
- Are there songs that you knew before Guitar Hero, but have grown to dislike after playing the song in the game? If so, what songs are these?

Only songs that get horrendously overplayed. Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria being the worst offender, but Enter Sandman, Through the Fire and Flames, and Down With the Sickness also took a noticeable dive on my like-o-meter after repeated exposure to them in RB/GH.

Quote:
- Have you gone out and bought an album because you heard the song in GH and liked it so much?

No. Generally speaking, I'll buy the DLC and that's the end of my investment.

Quote:

Playability is always paramount, but every disc needs to have a tether of recognizable music. I like an eclectic mix of familiar and unfamiliar on discs - the most popular songs aren't generally the most fun to play, so there needs to be some sort of middle ground.

Rock Band/Guitar Hero introduces me to music quite frequently. I can't say how many bands I never knew before GH/RB but now love, or had heard of but never really listened to.

For examples, I'll answer the next question by posting bands who's albums I've bought after hearing them in GH/RB:
Mission of Burma, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Pixies, The Strokes, Rush, The Dead Kennedys, Slayer, Machinehead, Behemoth, Harvey Danger, No Doubt, The NewNo2, Dealership, Locksley, The Dead Weather, Disturbed, Sonic Youth, Mastodon, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, That Handsome Devil...

and that's just some.

I can't say I've grown to actively dislike any songs because of GH/RB, but some are a little more annoying. Ace of Spades was way overused, so that irritates me a bit. There are some songs where I liked when I first heard them on RB/GH, but after hearing more of the band's music I've liked them less. Things like Colony of Birchmen or Conquer All. Both songs I heard through Rock Band, and while I still love both songs, I bought the albums and eventually decided they were some of my less-favorite tracks on each respective album.

As for the last question, I'd buy whatever. Lego Rock Band was basically my "hey these are a bunch of songs I know and love" game (although I did learn some new indie songs from it, none of them made /that/ big of an impact on me). However, in a heartbeat I'd buy a Rock Band game made up of tracks I totally don't know, as I trust Harmonix's decision. I'd be likely to buy a GH game of the same type, but Neversoft's lesser-known track choices haven't hit me as hard as Harmonix's. Not that they're bad, just less memorable IMHO. But I digress. YES I would buy a game full of tracks I knew and loved, and YES I would be a game full of totally unknown tracks.

I haven't really gotten into any bands because of Guitar Hero or Rockband, but they have helped me find songs I couldn't remember the name of and songs I just plain forgot about. If pressed I would say Anarchy Club because of RB.

    - Are there songs that you knew before Guitar Hero, but have grown to dislike after playing the song in the game? If so, what songs are these?
No, but the exact opposite has happened where I hate a song before playing it in GH but then I play it and end up liking the song. I got a bit irked by Raining Blood after being stuck on it too much but I like the song again.

    - Have you gone out and bought an album because you heard the song in GH and liked it so much?
    Not as of yet

I'd prefer songs I didn't know because they take longer to master and so long as the song is good I'm fine with playing it.

Of course. DragonForce, Bang Camaro, Buckethead and An Endless Sporadic are some examples.

- Are there songs that you knew before Guitar Hero, but have grown to dislike after playing the song in the game? If so, what songs are these?
Yes. Prayer Of The Refugee by Rise Against and Lazy Eye by Silversun Pickups for example. I totally got sick of both songs.

- Have you gone out and bought an album because you heard the song in GH and liked it so much?
Actually, two Queen albums that contain pretty much all of them: Killer Queen, Fat Bottomed Girls, I Want It All, Under Pressure, Stone Cold Crazy, We Are The Champions, and a lot more. Possibly other artists/albums I'm forgetting, too.

- Would you prefer a GH game composed of entirely songs that you did not know, or a GH game composed entirely of songs that you knew before playing? (In other words, do you enjoy the aspect of experiencing brand new music or music that you already know and love?)
Well, since I get bored of a piece of music pretty quickly, I'd say new songs is the way to go. I know it's fun to finally play a song in GH that you've heard a hundred times before, but when the game is only composed of that, its quality is decreased because of the lack of originality.
