So... how would you all feel about heroin being legal?

Haha, I'd like to see someone come up with a logical postive for smack.

First of all, the biggest problem with illicit drug use is the profits criminals make with large scale drug operations.
(see:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pablo_Escobar) The only effective way to limit illicit trade is through legalization and regulation.

A lot of addicts are being weaned off heroin either in prison, or as a condition for leaving prison. 90% will be in prison as a result of the habit. What is legalizing it going to do?

How about 18%(http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/content/dcf/duc.cfm), try doing research before spewing anti drug propaganda. At any rate, I think its ridiculous that we imprison people for doing something that causes crimes when misused. Also, the dangers of most drugs, especially heroin, would be significantly reduced by legalization and regulation. (http://www.doctordeluca.com/Library/L&ID/L&ID-12-ODmystery.htm) Legalization would also make rehabilitation easier, since they wouldn't be forced into prison with violent criminals where drugs are just as easy to come by. Though no civilized country has legalized any "hard" drugs such as heroin, Portugal has decriminalized all drug use, and has had overwhelmingly positive results since doing so. (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=portugal-drug-decriminalization)

First of all, I didnt ask for positives for legalizing heroin, I asked for positives to the users themselves. As for the 18% figure, that relates to all prisoners, not just heroin addicts, which I was specifically referring to. I agree that imprisoning people for doing something that causes crime when missued is absurd, not everyone acts in such a way when on said substance. But the physical and mental effects of heroin addiction cant be overlooked, and I feel that keeping it illegal is the right way to go, I just dont see any positives in taking heroin.

Heroin users shouldn't complain about being thrown in prison with violent criminals, they know the risks beforehand so what gives them the right to complain in retrospect? The fact of the matter is, heroin decriminalization would indeed have positive results, but these results all point towards the users stopping the addiction to heroin. Taking a drug in which the majority of users end up addicted, and their only wish is to stop the addiction, just seems completely ridiculous to me.

This all might seem a bit anti-heroin, but on a personal note I've known first hand people who have been addicted to heroin, and quite a few have died as a result. A close family friend was found dead on Saturday evening in his flat, with another. It's pretty much confirmed it was a heroin OD, the needle was hanging in his arm when they found him. I've had a relative stay with us when I was younger while he came off heroin for the first time, and it's a horrible sight, something I would not wish anyone to go through. My problems with heroin stem from seeing the effects of it, not from govt figures on how it funds crime, none of that relates to my views on it.

You don't have to see positives in taking it, legalizing would help those who do though, and that's a big reason that I'm for legalizing it (and other drugs)

23% is a small majority http://www.recoverycorps.org/addiction/opiates/heroin/ Remember, it doesn't need to be a good idea to use it for legalization to help the people, it would be a safer and cheaper habit if it was regulated, less money would be spent on the "drug war" and criminals would lose their biggest source of income.

Actually, if he died when the needle was still in his arm, that basically confirms that it was not an overdose, rather a reaction to additives often put in street heroin, that would not be present in legal, regulated heroin. http://www.doctordeluca.com/Library/L&ID/L&ID-12-ODmystery.htm

Just understand that I'm not for legalization because legal heroin is a good thing for users or for society, I'm for legalization because illegal heroin is worse for users and society

I agree that any drug should be legalized. One being that if I want to do a drug, I believe I should naturally be allowed to. I should be the one with the final say as to what does and doesn't go into my body. If I wanna use a drug responsibly (meaning privately, not affecting the public) then so fucking what?

Another reason being that as of now the government can't do a whole lot with them being illegal. It's sort of their way of shrugging the problem off I think. They need to legalize it and educate people (actually educate, no bullshit propaganda). By doing so more people having a problem with drugs and comfortably reach out for help if they want without fears. And cops don't have to loose any more men over this bullshit.

Right now it's called a "controlled substance" when there is actually very little "control" involved. Legalizing and regulating strictly would change that.
