A worthy necro, I think. Does a month really count as a necro anyway? Eh.

http://www.ptesquad.com/more/pte018.html

An album of Weezer songs covered in chiptune style, featuring some bands that have already been mentioned here (arcadecoma., :(, Nordloef and Anamnmanamnamanguchi) and lots of others that, in retrospect, probably should've been by now. While you're on the Pterodactyl Music site checking out the Weezer cover album, check out the rest of the stuff by arcadecoma., lutin, Lawrence Power and SLiVeR, all of which I've had for a while and can vouch for the greatness of... props to Ross aka arcadecoma. for linking me to that site in the first place.

In other news: Anamnamnamnaguchi confirmed as coming to RBN at some point after the new version launches. Good fuckin' times.

Seriously, how have these two guys not been mentioned yet? Most of their stuff is free to download.

*insert another comment about being surprised said band isn't posted yet* The Minibosses. I'm quite fond of their rendition of a bunch of Super Mario Bros. 2 themes.

Also, as for actual games with decent soundtracks, I recommend Aero the Acrobat and Maximum Carnage. If you're looking to download any video game music, check out Galbadia Hotel. They host a ridiculous amount of mp3s, midis, and even sheet music.

Last time I looked into it, a lot of people seemed to be using Ableton Live... not sure if that's still the case - your best bet is probably to check out the 'new to 8 bit' forum at 8bitcollective and see what they say.

As for game cover bands, you might want to have a listen to PRESS PLAY ON TAPE, so named after the message on the Commodore 64 screen when loading a tape:

Press Play On Tape

Extra cool when they play the main Cannon Fodder theme from the Amiga using game controllers as well...

As for original 8-bit music, there's still plenty of people making new music on the Commodore 64 as well, with all sorts of styles catered for.

The High Voltage SID Collection is the most well known collection of such music, with a massive 38,000 plus files of classic Commodore themes, including the early game music pioneers such as Rob Hubbard, Martin Galway, Ben Daglish etc.

Digging this up because there's a new Rainbowdragoneyes EP out and it's fucking awesome. Available to buy on Bandcamp for an absolute bargain, iTunes for (I'd imagine) the same price, or free from 8bitpeoples.

(Fun fact: if most Rainbowdragoneyes stuff had guitars instead of Nintendo bleeps, it'd be power metal and I'd probably hate it. As it is, I could listen to it non-stop for days.)

100DEADRABBITS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owgxBY0l-sg Nightmare (fans of Happy Gilmore yehhhh)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qelNBtng4f8 - Bloodstained Dollar Bill
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpbrxePGlPQ - Steady Motion

A couple covers:
Cutsman (originally by HORSE the Band) I know that synth at the beginning sounds a little rough, but give this one a try. I actually prefer it to the original and I'm a pretty big HORSE fan.
Rainbow Road (originally by iamerror)

Insert Disk - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SltaujNxSY - Kupwn
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXr1QVvj65k - Leave Luck to Heaven
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGToU7qo46M&feature=related - Fairy Theme

We Butter The Bread With Butter (not necessarily Nintendocore, but I do find that 8bit and Nintendocore fans seem to take a liking to them) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyL6lOGqpew&feature=related - 13 Wunsche
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLjj4xvx6zk&feature=related - World of Warcraft
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1KuJ6HN-E4 - Alle Meine Entchen

Oh, thanks for the link to that. I'd been meaning to get this.

http://artificialfear.bandcamp.com/

Wow. These guys are a metal video game cover band, and wow, they make some great covers. Most of the time when I listen to these types of bands I feel they are missing a little something and Artificial Fear does a great job giving just that. They mix very solid instrumental covers with samples of the game, not just of the music, but of ambient sounds and character voices. They also aren't afraid to play around with the track some. I can't say much for the Final Fantasy EP, but their Legend of Zelda album is fucking amaaaazing. Plus all their shit is free so it's definetly worth checking them out.

Does anybody know any other bands on the lines of this? It doesn't have to be metal.

Also, anyone know any good LoZ song covers / original songs inspired by the game? I'm a total Zelda nerd btw.

That's the only thing I can think of off the top of my head, but it is REALLY good in my opinion.

Royally ninja'd quite a while ago. >__> Anyway, I was very excited to learn of his new EP, and it really doesn't disappoint. All of the songs have vocals, which is quite the change-up from his old stuff.

Gonna go ahead and bump this thread for relevant awesome. My copy of Rainbowdragoneyes' "The Primordial Booze" came in the mail today. I received copy 41 out of 50. As the order entailed, I received the CD, a "Certificate ov Authenticity", and a personalized limerick. In the order details, I had mentioned purchasing his song on Rock Band, and so he made the limerick about that (Specifically me playing Rock Band constantly to the point where I lose my job and eventually my power, resulting in me Buying a Nintendo DS and playing that in the unemployment line). Anyway, I'm rather stoked about finally having a physical copy of some kind of Chipmusic, especially some from a cool guy such as RDE. It makes me feel pretty good inside knowing that I'm helping him fund his desire to keep making music. Hilariously, three people apparently bought the $30 bundle which included everything I mentioned above and a drop of his blood.

More from Rainbowdragoneyes? Well, why not. Only two tracks, and one of them is only a minute long, but it's bloody cheap and too good to miss. Obviously.
