Ironically enough, it would be fairly easy to trace back everything you've just written to Fox News and talk radio. _________________

I'm not sure this is much of a positive. The sense I get is that Gingrich is consciously a mean vindictive vampire, whereas nearly everyone else's mean vindictiveness is just a product of their simple-mindedness (i.e. they can't process anything further than "Obama bad = applause"). Yes he's more lucid, but I don't see where that translates into improved policy. He's peddling the same lobbyist-approved snake-oil as everyone else, he's just presenting it more arrogantly. So now he's the "intellect" and the "man of ideas" in a party that loves nothing more than to condescend to "effete professor types".
At least that's what George Soros told me to write. _________________

Okay, look, here's the problem with all the candidates.
Herman Cain: I've had his pizza, it sucks.
Michele Bachmann: Who the fuck names their child "Michele" with ONE "l"? That's just silly.
Mitt Romney: Mormon, we can't have a Mormon in a CHRISTIAN nation.
Ron Paul: Probably going to drop dead during a debate due to the excitement of being able to hear himself talk.
Jon Huntsman: Makes too much sense half the time.
Newt Gingrich: Can't wipe the shit-eating grin off his face long enough to sound like he cares.
Rick Perry: Doesn't even know what day it is. Probably still thinks the South won the war.
Oh and ferretgod nice try. _________________

I do love how ferretgod explicitly cites "anyone but Obama" as a core principle and hails Bachman as awesome. I mean, if you were trying to synthesize some sort of Fox News Straw Man Poster, it'd be hard to make a more on-the-nose comment. (It is kind of fun to see how such individuals process information - where Gingrich is a toadie one could live with but Romney is a toadie too far. Fascinating.) But anyhow, on the topic of Gingrich:

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that he was better on any sort of policy level or the like. I merely meant that he can, at times, at least pretend to give off a veneer of electability to lower-information voters who aren't really committed to a party, or seem a capable candidate when others are falling over their words or getting tangled in an interminable series of contradictory statements. I best heard some of Newt's rhetoric described as "this is the a dumb person's vision of what a smart person should probably sound like". "Yeah! Look how self-assured that guy is! Calling everybody else pea-brains? Telling them how dumb they are? He must know what he's talking about!" If you're already predisposed to believe the sorts of points he's espousing, that can seem reassuring. Weird that intellectually-framed bullying is somehow aces when intellectually framed being a nerd (as Obama does) is not, but OK, whatever.
(The above paragraph has been approved of by the globe-shrouding Vast Left Wing Conspiracy. You know, assuming their check clears.) _________________

So is this giant left-wing conspiracy machine that apparently everyone but Fox News and the Tea Party is a part of just going to make itself known and start shooting Liberalbeams at everyone to turn them into socialists like a giant political death star? And who's the emperor? Anderson Cooper? Just want to clear a few things up here. _________________

I've never been so inspired to illustrate an elaborate and hilarious political cartoon as I am right now. _________________

I think that talking point has mostly been shelved in favor of the "he's an empty vessel who gives pretty speeches with the help of a teleprompter" candy that talk radio puts on loop. As a result there are people who salivate at the thought of Newt taking on Obama in a debate because they assume he would crush him. They assume Obama got a law degree from Harvard due to affirmative action, and I'm sure there's a talking point to explain how you don't have to be smart to lecture on constitutional law.
Anyway there are a number of Republicans who realize they can't afford to let anti-intellectualism get in the way of preventing a pragmatic, consensus building centrist who passed a health care law with an individual mandate from occupying the White House in 2012. So far the anyone-but-Mittens candidates have not stood up to scrutiny. Gingrich is probably their last shot unless Santorum is going to get the December honeymoon. And Gingrich is killing Mittens in South Carolina, which opens up the intriguing possibility that Romney only takes one of the first three states, with Gingrich getting at least one other, and Gingrich, Perry, or even Paul taking Iowa. (Note I don't think Paul will get the nomination or even win any other states... but Iowa is a caucus, this is his last chance, and his supporters are fanatical, so if he's going to make it happen anywhere, it's there).

This is my list of candidates with the people I am no longer considering voting for crossed out...
Romney
Perry
Cain
Gingrich
Bachmann
Paul
Huntsman
Santorum
Obama
And Huntsman can't win...so it's Romney vs. Obama. I can't accurately choose between them (even though I'm Republican) until I see how Obama's last year turns out and how Romney handles himself in the upcoming months... _________________

In a year's time, Obama's approval rating may be low enough that the Democrats end up picking another candidate for the election. |
